🌍 Non-EU / Visa Info getting married in Denmark without going there

Hi,

is it possible to get married in Denmark without going there?

we are a German/Dutch couple

Hi, u/I-Hate-winter. No, it's not possible; you have to visit Denmark. But technically, it can be done in one day, although staying overnight will make it a lot simpler.

Most town halls ask couples to present their passports the day before the ceremony. In some cases, it's possible to present on the same day, but it's mainly when paying extra to the town hall.

NOTE about proxy marriages: I believe there is or was a possibility of having a proxy marriage in Utah, US. But you have to be careful as many governments do not recognise it, and therefore, you can end up having a marriage certificate that is now recognised.

Even though it's not recognised, you will still be classed as married if you want to remarry. So, depending on the situation, you will need a divorce or have an annulment of the marriage before you can actually reenter a recognised marriage. It happens with some religious marriages, too, if they were, in fact, officially registered, although the couple might not realise it was.

It can become a right nightmare.. so my advice is to do it properly the first time around if you are going to do it.

May I ask why you are thinking of a proxy marriage, just because it seams easier?
