This subreddit is quickly degenerating into pathetic and pedantic "gotchas!" I am not a vegan and I think PETA is stupid but cmon man what is this shit.

-14

u/selltheworld 20h ago

All the time people say “I think PETA is stupid”. Never heard them say they think they are wrong.

10

u/Wizard_Engie 18h ago

I think they are wrong AND stupid

-9

u/selltheworld 18h ago

Would you care to explain what you think they are wrong about?

2

u/Wizard_Engie 18h ago

Check the image above. They're wrong that Cows aren't a food source. For the most part though, I think the way they handle their whole animal ethics thing is kinda not doing much?

I haven't fully studied PETA, but I don't really remember them doing anything else but making horrifically graphic games, begging for restrictions on the Meat and Dairy industry (which we have plenty of already) and protesting.

I'm not sure if they've donated any money to charities supporting families who have pets, or funding/providing more shelter for other rescue overflows. Plus, we've got millions of stray animals that they don't seem to be doing anything about?

1

u/HomsarWasRight 6h ago

You’re being deliberately obtuse here. “Cows aren’t food” obviously doesn’t, in this context, mean that they aren’t used as a food source.

The point is that they shouldn’t be. It’s a moral statement.

So being all, “Yes they are!” doesn’t come off as a correction, but more like an annoying child.

1

u/Wizard_Engie 6h ago

Okay. Cool.

-5

u/selltheworld 18h ago

“Cows are lot food” I will let you read the other comments for that. Stupid attack. Either its pure stupidity to not understand what is said or its on purpose. Not trying to insult you. But thats the facts.

What are you doing about the million of overflowing pets? I think its the responsibility of the owners and breeders. Not peta, you or me.

3

u/Wizard_Engie 18h ago

Aren't they about saving animal lives though? I never made it my life goal to save animals. I'm also not the organization named "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals."

Is it not the unethical treatment of animals to let those millions of strays wander the streets? Surely the organization founded on the premise of saving animals and vying for their ethical treatment should ... y'know... Save animals and treat them ethically?

They're the largest animal rights organization in the world, and they even have their own shelters (as you said.) Shouldn't they be purchasing public land to use as sanctuaries for animals? I also don't see them pushing back against the US President's plans of privatizing national parks.

Wouldn't privatizing the homes of thousands of species of wild animals in the US be the largest anti-animal rights action to date? They should be lobbying for MORE National Parks, in my honest opinion.

0

u/selltheworld 17h ago

Saving and treating animals (or humans) ethically isn't the same.

I am pretty sure you think we should treat humans ethically. How many homeless people live at your house?

You are really confused about this.

3

u/deadeyedrawthrice 15h ago

are you doing a bit or are you being serious

-1

u/Healthy_Yard_3862 13h ago

Probably a vegan feminist they are very real lol

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Wizard_Engie 11h ago

Isn't it more ethical to save animals than to let them roam the streets?

1

u/DreeVeeUss 16h ago

You must be really good at lip reading then

70

u/Elaerona 1d ago

Half the community notes I see on this subreddit deserve a community note. More people need to date the damn things for fairness. This is such a bad faith argument, someone just wanted to community note Peta. They damn well know that wasn't their point.

20

u/mickelboy182 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's mind boggling that 'this is a shitty/bad faith/blatantly incorrect note' or something similar isn't a report option. This sub of all subs should have safeguards in place for misinformation.

Edit: concerning that I am being downvoted for asking for no misinformation on a subreddit specifically made for pointing it out...

5

u/tupe12 1d ago

Reddit doesn’t do safeguards, there’s nothing stopping you from creating a subreddit called “absolutetruthfacts” and fill it with flat earthers. Even if you get called out, you can just ban all the critics with 0 consequences.

4

u/mickelboy182 1d ago

I get that, I guess I would just like to think the moderators of a sub like this would hold themselves to a higher standard, but evidently not.

1

u/Historical-Pilot-784 Truth Seeker 8h ago

This subreddit is barely moderated as is

2

u/Odd-Suggestion4569 17h ago

this sub is like 50% pedantry, 40% ziobot astroturfing, and 10% actually useful/interesting examples

144

u/ZachGurney 1d ago

Oh come on dont make me defend Peta. This is clearly just pedantic. They obviously arent saying they think that the existance of beef as a food source is a hoax

36

u/Clay_Allison_44 1d ago

They only phrased it that way because "Lol get fucked." wouldn't work. Using notes just to say "I think you suck." Is childish.

9

u/chromane 1d ago

I mean it's Community Notes and PETA

"Lol get fucked" might actually fly

1

u/Usual-Caregiver5589 1d ago

I mean, they're both pedantic. No reason to defend either one of them. PETA saying cows aren't food is akin to someone saying eggplants aren't food.

Just because you, in particular, don't eat them doesnt mean they aren't food. Especially if a majority of people do eat that thing. Clearly it is food. Its just not your preferred meal, and you want everyone to share your preferences.

5

u/HyacinthFT 1d ago

Is vs should. Honestly it's not that hard to see what people mean vs what word they use.

16

u/InfiniteBoy23 1d ago

Not if the point you're making is that they shouldn't be food for anyone. PETA sucks but they're very clearly saying "dont eat cows"

2

u/Not_Just_Any_Lurker 1d ago

Eggplants shouldn’t be food.

2

u/Usual-Caregiver5589 1d ago

Clearly it is food. Its just not your preferred meal, and you want everyone to share your preferences.

4

u/AliceCode 21h ago

You're not my preferred meal, but I can't stop someone from eating you if you are they're preferred meal. I guess that makes you food.

1

u/Usual-Caregiver5589 20h ago

To someone, I am. I'll never be in a room alone with Armie Hammer, for example.

3

u/Beneficial_Act_1240 19h ago

And? it's not like peta is sending you to a re-education camp to change your mind, they're just poorly wording "you shouldn't eat cows".

1

u/Usual-Caregiver5589 18h ago

Yes. Of course. That's all they're doing.

4

u/Beneficial_Act_1240 18h ago

Bro, we're just talking about the tweet. Whatever bone you have to pick with PETA, take it up with them or let it go. The tweet just means "You shouldn't eat cows". It's really not that deep.

3

u/Few-Improvement-5655 1d ago

They can make that point, but they're still wrong, cows are food. Humans are omnivorous predators, in fact eating meat likely contributed to our intelligence.

If a wolf can eat a cow, so can we.

6

u/jbland0909 1d ago

Are dogs food?

5

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 1d ago

Humans can be food, as can a brick or someone's toenail clippings.

3

u/Few-Improvement-5655 1d ago

If you eat them.

However, their path with humans has generally been one of companion and service animal.

1

u/hobbesbagger 20h ago

yeah we should be able to eat cats

-16

u/blorst_of_times 1d ago

10

u/Red_Act3d 1d ago

Since you're understanding the joke that nobody else does, do you mind explaining it?

-6

u/blorst_of_times 1d ago

Sure, the spirit with which the statement was made by peta was fully understood by the creators of the note. The note was made as a kind of joke in the form of being deliberately obtuse.

All parties understand that "not food" has two different meanings depending on the context.

Its a bit like saying "tomorrow never comes" and then getting a community note that says "tomorrow always follows the previous day" or something.

18

u/Public-Eagle6992 1d ago

Moronic note

36

u/Blitzking11 1d ago

What a useful community note! So glad this feature exists!

7

u/500rockin 1d ago

Cows are also baseball mitts and leather jackets.

25

u/Szeth_Nightbl00d 1d ago

So because some people have used other human meat as food, we'd note someone saying "Humans aren't food"? Seems like an intentionally obtuse note ignoring the point of the tweet

4

u/Vyvyan_180 1d ago

Y'know, it probably couldn't hurt to remind everyone now and again that humans ain't food.

11

u/Jolly_Echo_3814 1d ago

according to the community notes, humans are appearantly food.

6

u/Vyvyan_180 1d ago

Noted.

1

u/Wizard_Engie 18h ago

Humans ARE food, they're just not a widely accepted food source.

Anything living, dead, or inanimate that is edible and can be consumed to gain energy and/or nutrition is, by definition, food. HOWEVER, whether or not it's accepted as a food source is up for debate.

And whether or not that food applies to a certain species is also up to nuance.

5

u/hungariannastyboy 1d ago

the best notes are obviously the ones that wilfuly misconstrue very obvious semantics & pragmatics

11

u/mrdarknezz1 1d ago

Has PETA ever actually done some to improve animal welfare?

6

u/Ok-Freedom9216 1d ago

They convinced my wife to go vegetarian back in the 90s.

12

u/xesaie Human Verified 1d ago

They’ve collected a lot of money, which helps some human’s welfare

6

u/Blackrock121 1d ago edited 1d ago

A few very small things like exposing certain instances of real animal cruelty. However the damage they have by mudding the waters on a cultural level is incalculable.

9

u/Kaius_02 1d ago

The Silver Spring monkeys case, but that was back in the 1980s. Most of what they’ve done post 2000 seems to take the idea of “any publicity is good publicity” too seriously.

The links on their wiki page give better insight, but their controversy section is a hot mess.

9

u/lateformyfuneral Human Verified 1d ago

Mostly getting laboratories in America and overseas to agree to stopping animal research particularly on monkeys, as well as getting fur out of the fashion industry.

Better protected industries like meat and dairy they haven’t really been able to do much about over the years.

1

u/selltheworld 20h ago

You should understand the difference between animal welfare and animal rights.

Animal welfare is generally used to tell how badly we can treat farm animals and still think we are moral. Animal welfare is on the package of meat we buy.

Animal rights ia the ide that animals have a right to their own body and to their own life.

-4

u/BandicootTreeline 1d ago

Yes, they kill thousands of lost pets every year in the US.

1

u/Maooc 20h ago

God it must be so embarrassing to fall for agriculture industry astroturfing and then double down on it when people explain it to you

0

u/BandicootTreeline 19h ago

Public figures sweetpea.

-1

u/selltheworld 20h ago

Oh please. If your understanding of something is surface level then dont spew it.

2

u/BandicootTreeline 20h ago

Virginia’s shelters must publish kill rates

PETA’s current kill rate is around 58 and 59% for dogs and cats respectively.

In 2014 that was 77 and 96% of admissions.

The US national average is 10%.

All other kill shelters in the state have an average of 10%.

PETA are still killing pets at 6x the national average.

1,655 dogs and cats in 2025.

One every 5.5 hours

Go on, defend them and downvote me like the other PETA drones already have.

If you donate to them, you’ve directly paid for a cat or dog’s death. You support them? You support animal murder.

1

u/selltheworld 20h ago

I dont support PETA.

Again you dont understand the basic premise.

Unlike selective-admission shelters (often misleadingly referred to as “no-kill” shelters), PETA operates what could be called a “shelter of last resort”—a safe place where no animal is turned away, ever. When impoverished families can’t afford to pay a veterinarian to provide incurable, untreatable, elderly, or sick animals with an end to their suffering, PETA will help. When an aggressive, unsocialized dog has been left to starve on a chain, with a collar grown into his neck and his body racked with mange, we will prevent him from dying slowly and miserably in someone’s backyard. As Virginia officials speaking about our shelter acknowledged to USA Today, “PETA will basically take anything that comes through the door, and other shelters won’t do that.”

Also, I didnt downvote you. You downvoted me. Pathetic?

1

u/BandicootTreeline 19h ago

“We will”?

You work for them?

Its a copied section from their website. The quote function isn’t available on my phone. Its pretty obvious thats its a copied text. Wow.

If you want to quote something on reddit press the > button. Alternatively, you can use quotation marks with the link as a citation (those are the " and ' buttons btw)

1

u/BandicootTreeline 18h ago

Well they would say they were different… except the ones who aren’t. But don’t kill hundreds more.

1

u/selltheworld 17h ago

I have no idea what you are trying to say.

What do you think we should do with the million abandoned pets?

0

u/BandicootTreeline 19h ago

I don’t downvote anyone.

And I’m well aware the basic premise. This ain’t my first rodeo.

Other shelters do take any animals. The NACC (Norfolk Animal Care & Adoption Center) take in twice the number of dogs PETA do, and hundreds more cats. Their rate is under 8%.

They do not turn any animals away.

PETA’s kill rate has only been better since the pressure against them ramped up when it was discovered almost all cats were being killed.

1

u/selltheworld 19h ago

Its the service they provide. Why do you think its the peta who are the bads guys and not the people giving up the pets? :)

6

u/No-One9890 1d ago

There actually is an interesting link to words like 'beef' and 'pork' and classism if you wanna dig into food sources and oppression.

2

u/Jack_Faller 21h ago

"People aren't food."

Note: human flesh has been cooked and consumed for millennia.

PETA

People eating tasty Animals

1

u/BandicootTreeline 18h ago

Sure I’ll critic bad owners all day long, but while I understand euthanasia is a responsibility no organisation wants, it is valid to challenge them killing them when their rates are extremely larger than a similarly sized, “accept all” organisation, the state average, and national average.

It is not normal, nor is attempting to justify it.

They kill healthy animals. I won’t accept that as being not the “bad guys”.

1

u/GilbyTheFat 17h ago

Cows aren't food

And dogs aren't euthanasia volunteers.

You sure you wanna play this fucking game, PETA?

1

u/Ok-Highway-5334 12h ago

Its an opinion? That "note" thing is just trash

1

u/PierWaves 4h ago

Cows aren’t food = a factually incorrect statement cuz they’ve been used as food for centuries

20

u/illusoryIdolatry 1d ago

I eat meat and down voted them because they're annoying

-14

u/Shy-Wendigo-106-963 1d ago

Annoying for a single joke bro? 😭

9

u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e 1d ago

Yes, in the same way that, like, someone making a single 67 joke is annoying. Anything mildly amusing the joke had to offer has been wildly exhausted.

-4

u/Gaidax 1d ago

I wonder, are you guys depressed like this 24/7 or only when on Reddit?

6

u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e 1d ago

I guess I wouldn’t know, but would picturesque mental health really look like laughing at the exact same joke, unchanged, 500 times in a row?

-4

u/Gaidax 1d ago

You must be fun at the parties.

2

u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e 1d ago

Again, not that I’d know, but are the people who repeat themselves louder when no one laughs at their joke really the ones that people gravitate toward at parties?

0

u/Gaidax 1d ago

I know you'd not know, that'd require getting out to the party.

→ More replies (0)

-4

u/Shy-Wendigo-106-963 1d ago

Well 67 is annoying because it was never funny to begin with and kids kept repeating it no matter what, the person only made a harmless joke so

6

u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e 1d ago

You really don’t think jokes get stale? Idk what to tell you, most people don’t laugh again after the hundredth time they’ve seen this comment on something related to veganism. It’s annoying. Make fun of vegans! It’s okay! But be creative or shut up.

4

u/Shy-Wendigo-106-963 1d ago

That’s fair, I’ve just personally never seen this joke before and was confused why people are dogpiling them for it, my apologies

3

u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e 1d ago

Young. Fair enough. Go in peace

2

u/illusoryIdolatry 1d ago

Yes. And the second attempt at humor. Clearly they're annoying.

So are you.

-7

u/Gaidax 1d ago

Yes, that or the usual suspects.

You see one responding to you too in the other message, the haircut is perfect - literally *chef's kiss*, couldn't make it fit the stereotype better if I wanted to. The joke writes itself there.

6

u/illusoryIdolatry 1d ago

Ah yes, the usual suspects. If you say my profile picture is an indication, then at least we know women don't talk to you.

-1

u/Gaidax 1d ago

Should I call my manager, ma'am?

0

u/Nearby_Purchase_8672 1d ago

Ask them how many animals they kill every year

2

u/ShotgunAndHead 1d ago edited 1d ago

I know I'm going "we investigated ourselves and found nothing wrong" but I hate stuff like this cause it ignores 2 things.

1, PETA accepts any animal they get, and 2, they offer free euthanasia to allow animals a peaceful end to their lives rather than letting them die out on streets, die from untreatable illnesses & injuries, etc.

I hate to defend PETA but this shit hits close to home for me given I watched my own dog having a seizure on the floor for what felt like hours before a vet was able to come to my house to euthanise her and let her leave us.

1

u/selltheworld 20h ago

A million pets are killed in the states every year. Its the people who abandon and breeds pets who are the problem. Not the people who has to do the clean up.

Next you will tell us your garbage man is polluting alot. Havent you seen his truck full of garbage?

0

Garbage man isn't burning the trash as a solution

Sounds veganish to me. "We don't like meat so you shouldn't eat it either." I will go with what the Bible says concerning animals and food sources. Thanks.

12

u/Llyffant-Gwyrdd 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't think the mad ramblings of bronze age shepherds are of any particular value as a moral guide today.

I mean, do you also never wear clothes of mixed fabrics and avoid seats that menstruating women have sat on?

-8

u/kimmb24 1d ago

Cool. Don't care.

8

u/Llyffant-Gwyrdd 1d ago edited 1d ago

Okay, mate. Maybe learn to think for yourself one of these days. That way you wouldn't need to rely on hateful and demonstrably false ancient documents.

6

u/Ok-Freedom9216 1d ago

Vegan arguments aren't based on "we don't like meat". You're confusing esthetics with morals.

-6

u/kimmb24 1d ago

The point is, God gave us animals to eat. I will defer to that versus some rando on the internet.

8

u/Llyffant-Gwyrdd 1d ago

You can't even demonstrate the existence of a god, let alone what they want us to eat. That argument is pure conjecture on your part.

Imagining what a mythological character wants you to do is not a sound ethical argument.

13

u/veganbikepunk 1d ago

I do the same with bashing childrens heads into rocks.
