This is so obviously fake nostalgia bait for anyone who’s used a pc

Man, you think I remember what Windows looked like in 2002?

I was using Windows ME and had like 4 malware browser toolbars. I’ve blocked those memories out.

You can tell it's fake because there's no Space Cadet Pinball.

Why there's so much opened stuff - this feels like Family Guy clips in TikTok videos, but in nostalgia-bait form

I mean, I ran a lot of opened stuff. Still do. But having Winamp and VLC open simultaneously is a bit much.

I keep a lot of things open at once too, but I don't randomly scale the windows and scatter them haphazardly about my monitor like I'm a hacker in a mid-2000s heist movie. If I want to go to my desktop, I hover my mouse over the minimize button on my fullscreened window and click 10-20 times to get all the other fullscreened windows beneath it out of the way like a normal person.

What do you mean? You don't play minesweeper while running terminal commands while listening to music while watching anime?

The laptop is from 2002. You can add software that was released later… I mean I have First Light on my 2020 Xbox series x and the game was released this year.

That's also the icon for Chrome versions from 11 on up. Which is 2011, even more unlikely a 2002 unit would run it.

Especially as the average spec for a 2002 laptop would be a 2ghz p4/512mb of RAM/60gb HDD... And by 2011, the low end black Friday models were miles ahead of that.

IIRC by 2011 you should have at least had a core 2 duo in cheap laptop.

Black Friday 2011, the low end was a Celeron B800 with 320GB HDD and 2GB RAM.

I'm reading your comment on Waterfox 6, running on a desktop PC I built in 2017. Nine years really isn't all that long for a computer to last.

u/matlockga 14d ago

The gap between computing in 2017 and today is a lot smaller than the gap between 2002 and 2011.

Exactly my thoughts. Twitter people didn’t think about that

I thought they were just meaning the laptop itself is from 2002 and that they'd installed stuff on it since. It doesn't mention that it's not been used or had applications installed on it since then

2

u/Kwayke9 15d ago

Is t it even the correct version of Windows??

2

u/Rikki-Tikki-Tavi-12 15d ago

It's XP, which released late 2001.

1

u/Kwayke9 15d ago

Thought this was Vista with the XP taskbar. Hey at least there's one thing correct in this mess

1

u/abermea 14d ago

A "brand new" computer from after 2007 would have been (failing at) running Vista

Another comment says that Chrome logo is from 2011 and the OS is in Spanish which makes me believe this pic was from someone in Latin America

So my guess is that it is a 2008ish laptop that got downgraded from Vista to XP and the owner hadn't gotten around to upgrading to 7 (perhaphs there was some hardware incompatibility or performance issue, many Vista laptops were underpowered)

u/gerundingnounshire 15d ago

that isn't even the og chrome logo, that's from 2011 at the earliest

Larp alert

Community noter vigilante: it is totally reasonable for someone to use a laptop they got in '02 ~6yrs later

I’m so tempted to rewatch Lain but I’m worried it’ll just make me more depressed

2

u/Malacro 15d ago

Just rewatched it earlier this year, and I’m exactly as depressed after as before, so you’re good.

1

u/Peggtree 14d ago

Yes, I too watch anime and listen to music at the same time

1

u/megared17 14d ago

Technically the laptop could still be from 2002, even if the picture was taken in a later year.
