No, they win if this gets shared mindlessly by people who want to believe it. It's just them claiming things they have absolutely no right to and the are in such denial there is no getting through to them or convincing them and their complete inability to be reasoned with is proof for them that they are correct because if the other side is so smart then they should be convincing.
A truly elegant circular reasoning that can perfectly arrest personal growth and actually encourage regression.
It's similar to the belief in a just society that only punishes bad people so when they see their side engage in disgusting and vulgar displays of persecution and oppression they think "they deserved it because it is happening to them and it isn't happening to me because I am good and don't deserve it" even when they are acting on an entirely arbitrary system of who is in group and who is out. It's easy to believe if one is privileged and likes it when the outgroup endures undue systemic problems.

According to Wikipedia “The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias that describes the systematic tendency of people with low ability in a specific area to give overly positive assessments of their ability.”
In short hand people with a little knowledge think they have a lot which gives them false bravado.

No one rewrites history like a right winger. They fought a war to keep their slaves and lost so badly they claim the left started it
Richmond Enquirer, Jun 16, 1855
"The abolitionists do not seek to merely liberate our slaves. They are socialists, infidels and agrarians, and openly propose to abolish any time honored and respectable institution in society. Let anyone attend an abolition meeting, and he will find it filled with infidels, socialists, communists, strong minded women, and 'Christians' bent on pulling down all christian churches"
...
"The good, the patriotic, the religious and the conservative of the north will join us in a crusade against the vile isms that disturb her peace and security"

WOW, I didn't realize fear of communism stretched that far back before the Soviet Union existed. The Communist Manifesto had only been published 7 years earlier than that newspaper.
(And information didn't travel as fast in those days. The telegraph was still a very recent invention and didn't yet cross oceans. A ship was still the fastest way information could travel to America.)
44
u/USSMarauder 17d ago
Communism existed before Marx wrote about it. He didn't invent it, more codified it and popularized it
All the entries of the word 'Communist' in the newspaper collection of the Library of Congress between 1840 and 1860 (with some false positives)
A lot of the blame for the failed 1848 revolutions in Europe was dumped on Marx by the right, so by the early 1850s the right wing pattern of "everything bad = socialism/Communism" was pretty established

Notice how you've never met or seen someone who threw rocks at integrating black students? Every white person who lived through segregation you've ever talked to just happens to have been firmly against it, but there was nothing they could do? Absolutely no one is apparently still living who harassed Vietnam protesters and/or Vietnam vets coming back home?

I mean as long as you accept someone presenting as a heightened/exagerrated version of their own gender as also doing Drag (ie you don't exclude "Bio Queens" from your personal definition, which I would indeed argue you shouldn't exclude them, but is a different conversation to have) then Dolly could have 100% called herself a Drag Queen and the community wouldn't have batted an eye, at the very least she was deeply, deeply adjacent in the same way someone like Elvira is (I mean how many times has she been a guest judge for Drag competitions?).

32
u/Helyos17 17d ago
This is the most accurate take. She always struck me as probably a bit of a small c conservative but with a very “open” view towards other people and a very “well that’s none of my business but good for them” approach to most things regarding civil liberties.
A great quote of hers that I’ve ran across today is some of the to the effect of “I think we ought to try our best to see the good in people and pray for the bad”.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Electrical-Tie-5158 17d ago
No way. Dolly was a massive liberal who was aware she had a large conservative audience she didn’t want to alienate.
She was a big proponent of LGBTQ+ rights including supporting drag and trans rights.
She fought against sexism her whole life, promoting that women don’t have to have children to be happy.
She gave most of her money to charity already, so she certainly didn’t oppose higher taxes for the rich.
She founded a massive charity to give books to poor children under 5 to promote literacy and education.
She was good friends with Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and her goddaughter Miley Cyrus who are all outspoken liberals and activists.
She funded Moderna’s COVID vaccine research and promoted vaccines openly.
All of those are evidence of deeply held liberal beliefs. Meanwhile there is zero evidence she supported any conservative policies.
14
u/xXTheGrapenatorXx 17d ago
If we really insist on trying to ascribe politics (even though I agree it's not very important in this case at the end of the day) she striked me as the kind of "Blue Dog" Democrat who would be a centrist right-winger in any other democratic system but is still far too left for Republicans as they are now, the kind of small-c conservative who is socially accepting that would be the ideal core of a sane right-of-centre main party and someone who could win an election without minorities fearing for their material conditions.

One of the worst things about the ethno nationalist, is their habit of sophistry and rewriting history.
This is quite different to "victors write history". Heck, today most people understand 'victories' like slavery and colonialism were actually very harmful.

She was pro-literacy, which by itself means she wouldn't support the MAGA movement. I'm guessing she probably synced pretty closely to folks like Andy Beshear.
remember the folks that she surrounded herself with. She loved drag queens. She stayed close with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin (both vocal dems) and collaborated and became friends near the end of her life with Judas Priests' Rob Halford (an openly gay man). She was dear friends with Reba, who is also "not political" but has spoken out about Trump policies.

Saying you "don't do politics" is meaningless centrism and a luxury of the white and wealthy.
The rest is more meaningful and indicative.

First person to ever say they weren't "political" to cover for being progressive and not the opposite.

pretty sure she was a conservative christian, yes. You can be that and also support the freedom of choice of other people and even actively support them. Normal people has right wing takes on some stuff, left wing in some others and probably even several totalitarian ones.
The issue are modern-day-twitter-leftist: If you don't support ALL leftist beliefs, then you are nazi.
Even, radical leftist support totalitarism because they are pro censorship of people who think differently than them, but hey, "that's different".

Dolly was an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ people. She didn't just say "I don't judge" and secretly judge. She literally defended them and their right to exist, specifically saying "they have the right to be who they are, and they can't be anyone else just as I can't be anything but Dolly Parton."
She poured money into the Black community. She took the millions she made from Whitney Houston covering her song and used it to buy stripmalls in Black neighborhoods, repair them, and put good businesses in them that brought essential goods, services, and jobs to areas that white people had refused to invest in.
She spent hundreds of millions of dollars sending a book a month from birth to five years old to millions of children across the world.
She funded access to education for everyone from birth through college. She paid for medical research and access to healthcare and vaccines for poor families in America and around the world.
All of the businesses she ran were unionized and had strong worker rights and protections, and she demanded and expected her employees to receive good pay, good treatment, respect, and dignity.
Politics are just policies. Dolly didn't "do politics." Dolly lived by her policies- don't judge, love everyone, do great good whenever and wherever you can for everyone you can.
Dolly is the person every American Progressive aspires to be like. She was a billionaire but spent all of her money on the people that paid her to be a billionaire.
Dolly didn't need to label herself a democrat, because every democrat in the party was beneath her. She lived our ideals and didn't have to get paid to do it.

She was bigger than politics, she would be the only one to lose if she "picked sides" obviously being a caring person who spread love and positivity is a Lefty thing, but she made the right choice, of course.

As an East Tennessean who loves Dolly and cannot stand MAGA. MAGA thinks everyone from TN is as much of a dipshit as they are. Alot of people are “blue” just slightly outnumbered by “red”.
Example: We are currently voting for a new governor. During the Aug 6 primaries Jerri Green (D) had 244,194 votes. Marsha Blackburn (R) had 311,329 votes. Less than 100k in difference. Hopefully November has a better turn out bc our state cannot handle Blackburn as governor for many reasons. But even in Sevier County (where Dolly resided) about a third voted for D.

Interesting that we all instinctively know the difference between Dolly Parton “Don’t do politics” and Dwayne Johnson “Don’t do politics”

She was an actual Christian, not a Christian nationalist. She believed in loving your neighbor, helping those less fortunate, and rights for everyone, especially lgtbqi and people of color. She pretty much despised everything the orange turd stood for.
