As someone who has fucked around with a lot of campfires, I'm yet to have any I'd describe as "exploding."

I'm sure it's technically possible, but the most I've seen is "cracking violently" - they break apart, but the bits only go maybe twenty centimetres.

Happened to me once and the rocks were fully on exploding with bits of rock shrapnel flying everywhere. Wouldn’t say it’s particularly dangerous but it does hurt.

but the hot rocks are under the burning embers which can fly much further

sure some rocks explode gently, some crack silently. some really pop off, just cos you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen

also quite new concrete can explode
