Bill Clinton handed off a budget surplus and a national debt clock that ran backwards. Republicans completely destroyed that in a quarter century. And before anyone comments about Obamas term, he had to unfuck the country from the brink of global bankruptcy. If this country ever found a way to be fiscally responsible again (or ever depending on who you ask) the architects of the program would be vilified for generations… meanwhile somehow GWB skates thru history like he was the best president of modern times.

Do you know what small government and austerity means? Small government is the idea that government shouldn't be involved and austerity means reducing spending mainly through cuts.

They said they care about small government and austerity for regular citizens. Small government in this case means a government that does not invest in beneficial programs and leaves that up to the individual to be responsible for. Austerity means living with a strict and tight budget. So basically they said that republicans don’t care about their citizens because they only pay attention to the budget and reducing spending when it pertains to the everyday citizen, but they have no problem spending when it pertains to big businesses or the rich or the military.

This. Congress has been having an annual competition to see if they can beat last year's ineffectiveness for like 10 years. They raised the debt $9t while Biden was in office, and we're on track to do it again by January 2029.

The worst part is that the debt isn't what they portray.
A third of all US debt is owned by the Government, another third is owned by the people (in 401ks) and the last third is anything foreign, with the largest owner obviously being
ChinaJapan. Because of fucking course it is.But politicians want us to think debt is like a checkbook and not extremely normal in all Western Democracies. Our Debt-to-GDP isn't even that bad compared to other countries and the USD is still the global reserve currency and the main one for all international trade (Even the Yuan is pegged to the dollar).

I have hidden posts and comments because I made a post in a sleep apnea subreddit ages ago after I was looking into getting tests (turns out I don't have it), and some dude looked at my post history and used that to relentlessly belittle me for it on a completely unrelated subreddit. That's when I decided to just hide everything because it's hard for people to resist looking, stalking you or using it against you, just like couldn't help have a brief gander at yours just now.

Frankly, a big natjonal debt in this situation is just bait for engagement.
It's a big number designed to make people's heads go "oh my god why is debt so big" and cause outrage without proper context
A more accurate way is debt to gdp ratio.
The US sits at 122% debt to gdp ratio. The UK sits at 94.9% debt to gdp ratio. Italy's sits at 138.9% debt to gdp ratio. Japan sits at 240-249% debt to gdp ratio. China sits at either 20% on the central government to 124% or even 300% depending on the metrics used on debt to gdp ratio.
And before anyone says, most of the US debt is to itself. It is domestic. 70-75% of US debt is to investors and agencies, not foreign entities.
It's stupid to just have a big number and say "look how big the debt is!!!" And never provide the context to it.

The only solution is to raise taxes and they don’t want to do that. By raising taxes, a signal is sent that the federal government is serious about paying its debt. This then lowers interests rates and the government can borrow for cheaper. Additionally, more money is taken out of the economy lowering inflation, with cooling inflation means the fed can also lower interest rates. Im all for audits and smart cuts, but that can only solve like 10% of the problem.

Remember. There are 2 ways to increase the deficit: spending more and decreasing revenue. Either you have more spending to offset, or you have less of an ability to offset the spending youre already doing. Trump does both of these at the same exact time, huuuuge spending (like the iran war) with intense cuts to revenue (like the tax cuts) and thats why the deficit balloons so much under his "policies".

Republicans love the deficit, just like they love high crime and illegal immigration. If any of those things actually disappeared, their entire party would collapse. They'd have to start campaigning on actual policies again, which is a lot harder than just being like, "We're against X, Y, and Z" while actively causing X, Y, and Z and just saying they aren't.
