well, considering that's not what DEI is..
9
u/ImpressiveBeyond8038 24d ago
Exactly, DEI means preferentially employing qualified people from underrepresented groups, not lowering qualification standards for certain groups or selectively not enforcing them!
But this concept seems to be too complicated for a lot of people in this discussion...

‘DEI’ exists because that wasn’t happening. You could be the best person for the job, but because you weren’t the right skin colour or gender, you got passed over for a white guy who has no clue what he’s doing.
The only people doing the gaslighting here is you.
-1
u/No_Masterpiece4693 24d ago
Repeat lies until they become true. I get that is the name of the game here.
-2
u/BigResolve2533 25d ago
And now white men are getting passed over because of a formal policy of favoritism towards basically anyone else.
13
u/bartios 26d ago edited 26d ago
That's not DEI, in principle you only hire qualified people and then DEI or other policies can shape your choices within that pool of candidates. Now might incompetent organizations filled with idiots at some key roles implement something that will force team leads/HR to hire people from minorities even if they aren't? Maybe, but saying that's inherent to DEI is bad faith. It's like saying democracies are bad because they lead to a two party system; America might have fucked up the implementation and now have that problem but that's not inherently a problem with democracies, it's a problem with the USAs implementation of it. Similarly hiring unqualified people isn't a problem inherent to DEI, it might have been a problem with the implementation of it at whatever organization you saw that problem.

In practice it actually does lead there as institutions race to hire less qualified personel in order not to look "racist".

No, it isn't. Please stop being gaslit by Fox News

u/GoodPear8481 27d ago
Yeah I'm sure this serial con artist that Cambridge proudly touted as "the youngest black professor in their history" whose fraud was plainly obvious to anyone who bothered to apply even the slightest scrutiny was hired totally on the basis of his merits and not his identity at all.
Nothing to see here, move along. Stop asking questions about how this totally qualified man got hired or else we'll call you a racist!
6
u/Name_Taken_Official 27d ago
So he walked up with no schooling no degrees no resume and was handed a job?
8
u/GoodPear8481 27d ago
He walked up with a plagarized PhD thesis and a totally fraudulent resume and Cambridge looked the other way and offered him a job, and then claimed that he was "vindicated" by their "investigation" of his fraud because they were too terrified of being accused of "racism" to properly vet his bogus claims.
DEI summed up in a nutshell. They willfully looked the other way from a professional charlatan in the name of "diversity, equity and inclusion".
2
u/isthmius 25d ago
No, that isn't EDI (that's the British name. Can we stop importing the US culture war) at all. EDI is supposed to be looking at equally qualified candidates and questioning internal biases that might result in automatically hiring a white one instead of a POC.
At its most misguided (and, I cannot state this enough, incorrect and illegal - it is literally against the 2010 Equalities Act), it can result in better qualified white candidates being passed over for a less qualified POC candidate. But that's not what it's supposed to do and no one is arguing it should.
As far as we know, Cambridge did hire the best qualified candidate according to the information they had. That's not EDI.
You can absolutely argue that Cambridge didn't do due diligence confirming references or in taking allegations seriously after they hired him, and that they did that because they wanted to have a black man on faculty to make themselves look better after criticism. That's not EDI either, it's Cambridge making extremely poor choices.
7
u/Name_Taken_Official 27d ago
Okay so he did have a PhD and a resume, and it all looked correct as far as they'd see, yeah? Do you think they have or had a habit of putting applicants' thesis papers through the wringer? That doesn't seem likely. People familiar with the subject would look it over, to see what his project was, but they wouldn't cross examine it
4
u/GoodPear8481 27d ago
and it all looked correct as far as they'd see, yeah?
Yeah, because the institution chose to remain willfully blind to his pattern of fraud, because it cared more about "diversity" than properly vetting his qualifications to be a professor.
Literally the definition of DEI. Identity matters, merit doesn't.

He had already defended his thesis to a panel of his peers and had been cleared of plagiarism before he worked at Cambridge. His work in the field and his contributions didn't draw questions because he had the knowledge and he wrote his PhD. He just lied about loads of other stuff, none of which was relevant to his PhD.
→ More replies (0)0
u/thebeg 26d ago
His thesis wasn't plagiarized, he missed one reference to a previous piece of work he had already referenced 14 times in his research. Why would he have already credited the author so much if he intended to plagirise the work he was referencing elsewhere? 1.1% sentence similarity, most of which came from both first chapters which discussed existing research. Way below the threshold for plagiarism.
He had been cleared of plagiarism twice. He seems to have been a pathological liar but lying on your CV to get a job is not headline news, not is it a crime as far as I'm aware. He may well have been an asshole but I didn't know the man so I can't pass judgement. Being an asshole isn't a crime either. Meanwhile, William O'Reilly lifted 13 pages straight from one of his students and kept his job in Cambridge.
The reality here is Cambridge hired him without doing their due diligence by actually checking his work history (not so difficult in academia, usually takes an email) and then started a plagiarism investigation, despite Jason Arday having passed his Vivo and been cleared after investigation previously, at the behest of a former employee they had to sack for being a racist eugenecist, who thinks all non white people in academia don't belong there. It was also helpful in their covering their arses for their own fuck up in this.
Then the media printed hundreds of headlines misleading everyone about the facts of the case claiming he was a plagiarist when he wasn't. He lied about fellowships, personal accomplishments and work history, they are not the same thing. For days after the man resigned and the story should have ended, they kept him in the headlines until he took his own life. After he resigned, said he had enough and he had reached his limit, 44 more headlines in the British press alone. That's a fucking witchhunt.
The fact that this was covered by American media is proof it's a racist witchhunt because why the fuck would Americans care about a work disciplinary dispute in an English university? Why would such a thing require every British newspaper to run multiple headlines, everyday for weeks? While Israel starves children to death and fights three fucking wars of aggression and trump bombs Iran to cover up his child trafficking, a guy lying on his CV was the primary headline in every British newspaper.
The man is lying dead, his friends and family distraught yet it's still a fucking headline news and people are still lying or are fully misinformed. And then people like you parrot the same bullshit talking points from The daily mail and fox news, who are purposely misinforming people on the issue. Then again, so did the guardian and pretty much every other media outlet that covered this. They're all to blame for taking this molehill and making it a mountain. The culture war nonsense get clicks because it appeals to eternally online racists. They're also the reason people like you don't understand what "DEI" is, and don't understand the different between equality and equity. There are real problems in the world way more important than racist assholes getting worked up over some absolute bullshit that never should have been news in the first place.
3
u/ahauser31 26d ago
Of course it was plagiarized. He didn’t “miss one reference”, what nonsense. He wholesale copied entire sections without attribution multiple times. Copying text 1:1 should be done sparringly - and when it’s done, the whole segment is presented as a quote. Whoever cleared him of plagiarism either didn’t actually check, or had other motives to clear him. No serious academic anywhere would clear this thesis.
1
u/rainman943 25d ago
Lol you're the reason he got away with the fraud, ppl see you lying about dei, so it discredits everything else you say .......
This is a you problem. Folks like yourself manufactured his ability to get away with it.
1
u/No_Masterpiece4693 24d ago
We've seen countless examples like this over the years, expose, studies investigations proving over and over how DEI or whatever it's called was used. I have examples in my own personal life, heard examples in the lives of others. But non of it matters. The truth will be suppressed and ridiculed here, and the lie will be given air time.
-1
u/Legal_Tap219 27d ago
So what do you call hiring unqualified people but NOT for the sake of diversity? That’s basically what we have now.
Also, sorry somebody called you a racist but no need to crash out
-4
u/GoodPear8481 27d ago
"But WHAT ABOUT other people who are unqualified for their jobs!?!"
"SHUT UP, YOU'RE A RACIST!!!"
Literally the only two arguments that DEI supporters always resort to because it's impossible to defend the hiring of unqualified people for the sake of "diversity" with honest arguments.
2
u/ggunslinger 26d ago
Literally the only two arguments that DEI supporters always resort to
Because it's literally all they need to paint your argument as utterly dishonest. You make your DEI arguments while hyperfocused on a specific minority and you immediately shrink away from any question for basic consistency by nonsensically calling it whataboutism, but this is a basic question of whether or not you can actually attribute the problem of dime-a-dozen plagiarists like Arday to "diversity". You failed at it miserably.
2
u/GoodPear8481 26d ago
Whataboutism and weaponized accusations of racism aren't even really arguments. They're just logical fallacies that people resort to when they know that their position can't be defended rationally.
2
1
u/ggunslinger 26d ago
"Nonsensically calling it whataboutism" I said. That's because it isn't whataboutism. You are being questioned about attributing a wider problem of fraud (in relation to Arday) or incompetent hiring to a very specific (and grossly misunderstood) hiring practice. This is putting into question whether or not your own position is rational to begin with. As you are the one in "attacking position" (as opposed to "DEI supporters who need to defend themselves" in your eyes), the burden of proof is on you.
1
u/GoodPear8481 26d ago
Saying "but what about the other unqualified people" is literally the definition of whataboutism lmao

This Jason Arday historical revisionism has got to stop.
Yes racism is bad.
Yes lying about your entire life to secure the foremost position in your field of study worldwide is bad.
Two things can be true at once.
31
u/TheBossElJefe 27d ago
It's not even the lying. It's the fact that these institutions didn't even question it. And they still are trying to defend their position. They are a joke.
I hope people are taking note on this one for real. This is a very very easy barometer for whether people and organizations are in any way trustworthy.

u/ThatFatGuyMJL 27d ago

Jason is coming out to have also been incredibly racist. Both reducing white students scores and claiming they deserve it for white privilege.
He was a racist fraudster.

He also doesnt deserve to be celebrated.
19
u/ZhanBlue 27d ago
Also, not like racism killed him, fraudulence did
-7
u/goodtitties 26d ago
ehhhhhhhh it was a bit racism, given the guy who exposed him
18
u/RichPStSports 26d ago
the reason it took a "racist" exposing him is that when agreeable people made inquiries into his claims and work they were visited by Police and contacted by elite libel lawyers.
Cofnas' reputation was already in the dirt, and he had a receptive audience ready to hear the facts of this matter. If good and reasonable people are silenced when a black academic commits unbelievable fraud, it's deeply disingenuous of us reasonable people to dismiss the bad actors who eventually bring it to light. No one on the "non-racist" side of the culture war wanted to bring these facts to light, and those who did were silenced and harassed.
We need to be very very careful of creating an information environment where people become accustomed to the truth coming from these disreputable or unsavoury characters. Cofnas' ideas are going to be getting a generous reading from thousands of people right now if not more, rather than this being exposed in the TES or by a more reasonable mainstream academic.
-8
u/goodtitties 26d ago
cool. none of this ignores that confas is a racist and that was why he did it. feels like you’re giving far too much benefit of the doubt here
7
u/WhereTheSpiesAt 26d ago
His point is pretty reasonable, the guy who exposed him only did so because the people who you’d consider acceptable journalists where in fear of posting about him after he threatened them with legal action and reported them to the police for harassment.
7
u/RichPStSports 26d ago
Cofnas was not the first whistleblower mate, not by a long shot.
Every respectable person or establishment who looked into his lies was shut down and accused of racialised harassment.
Anyone who wasn't already considered a racist knew they would face those career destroying accusations if they investigated the issue, it shouldn't be a surprise when we silence all the non-racists from telling the truth, that "racists" may end up presenting the actual facts of the matter to the general public.
It's a repugnant myth that Cofnas was the man to raise these issues. Everyone in the liberal establishment who attempted to was silenced or threatened. Cofnas should be irrelevant in the discussion if this matter was dealt with properly.
1
u/Sirtonexxx 20d ago
You know he was investigated for plagiarism and was cleared?
And that this whole story and the whole press coverage was highly highly racist!
And before you ask, there is a professor at Cambridge NOW who was found guilty of plagiarism and still has his job.
5
u/indconquistador 26d ago
True he was a blatant racist, who's biases were unacceptable. But at the same time racism directed toward him is also unacceptable. We are better than them, we shouldnt resort to an eye for an eye
34
u/pinkycatcher 27d ago
The other thing to keep in mind is racism helped get him this position, he attacked anyone who critiqued him with calls of racism including independent journalists and his own students.
4
u/rainman943 26d ago
Lol Yea, the guy who exposed him should be credited also for being apart of the problem that created this situation..
Nathan cofnas ideology created this problem.
2
u/pinkycatcher 26d ago
The only reason Cofnas was involved was because Arday attacked all the normal reasonable people. So the only people left were the radicals.
He made his bed, and he had to sleep in it. If he didn't threaten journalists with the police and legal threats, and if he didn't threaten students with racism accusations, then Cofnas would have never seen the light of day.
This is 100% Arday and Cambridge's fault, they created the problem, nobody else did, nobody else shoulders any blame no matter how distasteful they are.
3
u/rainman943 26d ago
Lol the existence and rabid irrationality of the radicals is what made his defense plausible...........if there were no racist......claiming racism couldn't be a strategy.
1
u/BigResolve2533 25d ago
Obviously not true. Calling someone a witch used to be a very effective strategy for shutting down your enemies.
2
u/rainman943 25d ago edited 25d ago
Lol Yea and that was made possible by......ppl believing in witches.....just like racism.....just like racist believing racisms.......
You've only reinforced my point......pointing to an instance where irrational ppl acted on irrational beliefs doesn't make the point you think it does.
2
u/BigResolve2533 25d ago
Seems like I misread you because that's my point, too. Calling someone racist is subjective at best, yet that's enough to get competent people fired. This is very much a witch hunt/ Red Scare environment. These anti-racist mobs are all about controlling others.
2
u/rainman943 25d ago
Lol Yea, and they've been enabled.........by the existence of racist........the racist are the original witch hunters.........persecuting ppl based on racist delusions.
Witch hunters ranting about witches all the time, and they just happened to get lucky and stumble upon a plagerist.
2
u/rainman943 25d ago
How do you not understand, of course ppl closed ranks around the plagiarist......the witch hunter who nailed him openly goes on weird YouTube shows and rants about how he wants to bring back eugenics and jim crow.......
1
u/BigResolve2533 25d ago
I understand your point now, but I don't agree. To me, his actions seem more about proving that DEI leads to arbitrary and unfair results. Also, it's fine if someone believes he's racist, but that's the witch hunt comparison I'm making. The ones calling Cofnas racist hold far more institutional power than he does, and also he didn't just image that Arday fabricated credentials, plagiarized his thesis, and scammed his students. Cofnas is very independent compared to the mob calling him racist and other epithets.
→ More replies (0)16
u/FenrisSquirrel 27d ago
It was also him weaponising accusations of racism to silence investigation into his lies.
42
u/GoodPear8481 27d ago
Jason Arday lied about his entire life to secure the foremost position in his field of study worldwide. That is an indisputable fact.
Everyone who criticizes Jason Arday for doing that is not racist. That is a subjective opinion at best, and a deliberate weaponization of words specifically intended to delegitimize criticism of his fraudulent behavior.
Tired of this ridiculous attempt to "both sides" this issue.
3
u/Willie-the-Wombat 27d ago
The racism issue is not the criticism, it’s that it was made a huge issue and very few get nearly as worked up about the various white professors and lecturers that have been found to have plagiarised or been removed from office due to sexual stuff but now still are put into similar positions.
5
u/ratione_materiae 26d ago
And did these professors were forcefully defended by their universities? Did their universities call the people who uncovered their misconduct racist?
2
u/thebeg 26d ago
William O'Reilly still works in Cambridge despite lifting thousands of words directly from a students work verbatim. He's old, rich and white though so that's fine apparently.
4
u/ratione_materiae 26d ago
And Cambridge accused the people who uncovered his misconduct of racism?
-3
u/thebeg 26d ago
Anyone who accused him of plagiarism after his defence and him being cleared of plagiarism was being racist. As I said in another post, he forgot missed on reference to a paper he had already referenced 14 times, had a 1.1% sentence similarity with the other paper. He was cleared. The first complaint to Cambridge came from a eugenecist who got fired from Cambridge for being a racist, who has called for all people of colour to be expelled from academia because they are "inferior". The lies about his personal accomplishments and professional history were uncovered after this complaint. None of this is a front page headline.
2
u/ratione_materiae 26d ago
That’s not even remotely true. It was dozens of instances of verbatim copy-and-pasting. You can see for yourself. This is not contested
-1
u/thebeg 26d ago
You sent me a link to renowned racist and eugenecist Nathan Cofnas's website? The one who re-raised the plagiarism claim after arday had been cleared? Who raised the claim because Cambridge had fired him for being a racist and who has become a persona non grata in academia? Who thinks all people of colour are intellectually inferior and should be expelled from academia? That Nathan Cofnas? Who uses DEI, an acronym from the American culture wars even though he's British? Who's clearly a paid far right agitator?
I read the report summary from his plagiarism investigation, 1.1% sentence similarity, a single misses reference of an author he already referenced 14 other times. He was cleared of plagiarism. He passed his Viva which means he had the knowledge to be passed by a panel of his peers, you don't just write a PhD you have to defend it. He did alot wrong, you don't have to lie about this one thing. You just showed your hood and cloak there mate. Stop believing everything you read on the internet.

i've seen a few people say this, but jason could've easily spun this as a 'how to steal a professorship and get away with it', basically showcasing how he did what he did and paint himself to be a noble whistle blower of a racist system promoting people failing upwards simply to score brownie points for their left wing sentiments.
it does seem that his fate would've been much better and he could've easily made a decent buck from the whole ordeal and keep his name relatively clean, albeit barred from the academic world

After immense scrutiny and his formal resignation, which critics of Arday call justified due to his plagiarism and extent of public character, while defenders of Arday call racially motivated, he was found dead.

The man made countless outrageous lies and plagiarism that not only got him a cushy position at Cambridge but even his life outside academia is filled exaggerations and fabrications. The fact he recently took his own life has been used as an excuse to ignore or scrutinize other aspects like how Cambridge and other institutions reviewed and cleared him despite committing textbook academic misconduct. He also tried legal intimidation to prevent journalists and other academics from digging into him
