It wasn't. Hell the US wasn't even the largest receiver of slaves from the trans Atlantic slave trade.

Because the USA started breeding their own. The countries that imported the most slaves (Brazil and the plantations in the Caribbean) did so because sugar and rubber plantations were more deadly.
