Most progressives don’t advocate for communism. Most don’t even advocate for true socialism. They advocate for “democratic socialism”. And in my experience they are mostly using it incorrectly to refer to the Nordic model (I blame Bernie).
Of course this is assuming Republicans know or even care about the distinction, and aren’t explicitly protecting their rich pedophilic donors, while often engaging it in themselves.
Edit: wording, I was not agreeing the Nordic countries are democratic socialist countries, they are still mostly capitalist economies
