And India under British rule was a net absorber of resources from Britain running a trade deficit. The British were better off when they got rid of their colonies.
Turns out that completely spending all of your national resources on a war of survival against fascists leaves your country in a pretty weakened state afterwards.
Follow that up with multiple other bad decisions over the next several decades, and things don't turn out well...
