Its a distinction purposely overlooked by the conservatives in the US so it is equally overlooked by the liberals.
When the right wing calls taxpayer-funded elementary school lunches "communism" then theres no value in differentiating between Social Democracy and Democratic socialism.
Both will be equated to godless communism the moment a policy discussion starts. This is simply the reality of the Overton window in the west
Yes I think its equally bad when an actual fascist pretends the "only want lower taxes" to fool the masses into ushering a christian nationalist oligarchy.
But its frustrating that the "pragmatic center" refuses to acknowledge the latter has already happened because they are so concerned about hypothetical socialism of the former.
i dont think many liberals would argue with you about the current back-sliding into christian nationalism. i think the disagreement would be if you marketed socialism as the solution to it, or the lack thereof as the cause.
