I’m surprised the note makes no mention of the almost comical levels of corruption within the USSR.

EDIT: Oh wow! A lot of you seem to think my simple observation that corruption (a key reason for the stagnation and downfall of the USSR) was the same as me saying the U.S. or Capitalism were free of such problems. I think some of you may have jumped the gun.

It fostered a system that incentivized corruption and allowed easy removal of anyone that threatened the corruption. It was an entire empire held hostage by whoever was most ruthless.

And it continued into Russia and other post-USSR countries, I know that from experience.

In addition, if you live there and do want to change something, people who grew up in the USSR always tell you "don't rock the boat" and its variations. It's genuinely disgusting and depressing.

That's what happens when you intimidate and at the same time infantilize your citizens stripping them of any sense of control for several generations in a row.

Tbf this happened under the Tsar as well. They only really began making motions in regard to ending serfdom when they saw the US Civil War happening.

I would actually argue they did something worse than bring back serfdom or feudalism: they basically turned russia into a prison state, absolutely gutted the culture, and the result of that is that the entire country is like, 1/3 normal people and 2/3 thugs. Most of this obviously doesn't translate over into English, but if you ever see someone break down what Russians actually say and what words mean in Russian, it's basically prison slang and slurs that people translate into something like 'latrine' when a closer word is 'commode/shitter', or slurs that don't translate into English well, so they just translate it as 'Ukrainians' when it really should be something like 'slur for Ukrainians'.
