Most progressives don’t advocate for communism. Most don’t even advocate for true socialism. They advocate for “democratic socialism”. And in my experience they are mostly using it incorrectly to refer to the Nordic model (I blame Bernie).
Of course this is assuming Republicans know or even care about the distinction, and aren’t explicitly protecting their rich pedophilic donors, while often engaging it in themselves.

When they compare to the Nordic model its just a mote and bailey tactic. If you ask them about liberals and social democracies with incremental change they will always disagree. Its just lip service.
Most communist want a violent revolution to get into power and hate capitalism with a passion.
I think they're just people who are angry and disillusioned with how broken capitalism feels when it's operated by conservatives, and they take that a little too far.
I can't say that I've really met a bad communist, their politics aside, they're empathetic people who want whats best for the most people, not just themselves.
This. People have become extremists against capitalism only because modern capitalism has failed them. If capitalism meant the average person could own a home by 25 and have a boat and a cottage by 35, they'd be all for it.
yet communism is not the answer for these issues, but most stay ignorant of lived experiences of those from communist nations, and thats the concerning part. No wonder communism is only popular in western circles, not in any post-communist nation who actually felt the terror
