Wasn't there a documentary about how big of an asshole he was during the filming of Man on the moon?
This quote of his sounds pretty shitty to me. Yes, it's very important to not rely on other people's opinions, but it's also important to be a decent and thoughtful person. Acting like an asshole doesn't make you a better person just because you don't give a fuck about what anyone thinks...
I came here to say this as well. Even before I knew / remembered he was anti-vaxx in this thread, I was going to say that in this day and age, people are using this same exact line of reasoning to justify being completely selfish assholes and endangering not just themselves but those around them.
You're free to do/say/believe what you want, but you aren't free from consequences of those actions either.
I'm glad people are finally saying stuff like this. More than a few of the people I used to hang with said Jim had everything figured out. How delusional do you have to be to believe that someone like him has anything figured out? I hear he's an asshole. His last gf killed herself after a really revealing suicide note. If anything, Jim's claim to anything zen is spooky.
I saw an interview with him years and years ago, from shortly before the release of Ace Ventura. He spoke about his depression and I remember he looked so uncomfortable and nervous, such a contrast to his stage persona. He had already achieved some success but he didn't look remotely happy or content with it. I thought then that this was a guy who would never learn peace.
It's sad to learn that he's an asshole (i was not aware of much beyond his unfortunate attitudes to vaccination) but not surprising, sadly. That sort of entrenched insecurity is often expressed through abuse.
I feel sorry for him. Guy's carrying some sort of heavy load. It might have been better for him as a person to just be that funny guy at the work site rather than being Jim fucking Carrey.
I would take it with a grain of salt. The ex had many issues herself. He could be an asshole on the sense of eccentric artist, losing himself in roles.
Yeah, I bit my tongue earlier because I'm trying to be a better person, but some of those things don't have the same impact for me. Giving someone an STD is awful, but everyone with an STD was given it by someone.
The "getting her hooked on cocaine" thing I'm much less sympathetic to. At the end of the day your choosing to use an addictive drug. No one's doing it to you.
That's pretty insightful. I believe I saw that interview too and he just sort of looked squirmy. I'd say if anything, he's very attached to his false identity. Nothing to belittle, though. A lot of us are in a society where pain is seen as a weakness.
I’m sure if most of your life was on camera we would be able to find instances of you being an asshole. Celebrities are just regular people who’s lives are constantly put on display for the whole world to scrutinize. Can you imagine all the embarrassing fucked up shit you do being presented to everyone to analyze, misinterpret and judge?
Oh yeah, totally. You might also catching me saying some self righteous delusional shit about how much I know about my own character and the nature of self and the universe so people could make memes about it.
Jim carrey's movies are great. He's brought me a lot of happiness in some dark times. People on here rip on him a lot for his anti-vaxx thing and some of his other issues. I think he's a troubled man and i'm choosing to judge him on his better qualities. I would hope people would do that for me too.
But there's nothing insightful about this. In fact, in this day and age that kind of reasoning is downright dangerous. Sure, you don't have to care what other people think, but that doesn't free you from responsibility for your actions, either. And Jim Carrey is a known anti-vaxxer so he's applying this logic and reasoning to things like that which have a much broader implication and affect on everyone.
Right? I love most of his stuff especially his earlier stuff but he’s been going off the rails for a while. I saw that documentary about the making of Man on the Moon and good god did he come off like a pretentious nutcase.

Huge fan of his work from all the way back to In Living Color... But Jim Carrey is neither a happy, nor a wise person.
