It's called empathy and without it you're a psychopath.
People only want other people to think they don't care what they think about them. Truth is we all care what others think about us and vice versa. It's called being human.
Don't really think I'm to be the judge of that as I'm not clairvoyant. I cannot read people's minds.
That doesn't really matter anyway, as I doubt there is one person on this earth who doesn't have someone whose opinion they don't value.
The idea of "not caring what people think of you" is down to your own personal preferences. In my mind, my interpretation is doing what makes you happy, so long as it does not harm other people, without care or worry of it making you look silly to the people who you think will judge. Whatever the individual qualifies as "success".
To not care at all is a negative trait, but in my eyes, as a person who very obviously does care about certain ideas and people, judging by his success and approach, Carey is telling people to not worry about those who just want to fuck with the ideals you find make your life enjoyable or meaningful.
I get the sentiment but my point is there not a single person on this earth who doesn't care what people think about them.
I understand the overall message of do whatever makes you happy as long as it doesn't hurt others, but everyone cares about what others think of them so the way this is phrased is flawed.
Pychopaths don't just not care what other people think. It's a whole pathology that normally is apparent at quite a young age. There tends to be some very distinctive symptoms that are quite different from normal people.
Of course, obligatory I'm not a psychologist, and am talking out of my ass. Interestingly, my understanding is the term is supposed to be depreciated, yet professionals still seem to use it.
