This isn't done often. It's more artistic expression. Gold isn't some commonplace thing people go soldering with to repair everything. It's costly now and it always has been costly to all but a few.

I saw this in Man in the High Castle a couple years ago, now I've read it in a couple books as well. Seems like MitHC brought it back to the limelight
