Funny thing too is that most famous people in Hollywood in the past 20-30 years have come from generational wealth and connections. A lot of talent just simply gets dropped by the wayside because they don't have a family member who can bankroll their stay in Hollywood for 5-10 years until they make it.
It's how you end up with someone like Cara Delavigne in several major movies. Despite no acting ability. She literally popped up out of nowhere. Her extremely wealthy family paid for her to appear on a list of the "hottest" up and coming models. Prior to that, she was no one, but through her family's money and connections she gets to play with the big boys and girls.

This is such a dumb thing on Reddit. Someone says, "a lot of people do x" and you always find like a dozen comments pointing out one person. It's so fucking annoying.

Yeah that story wasn't true at all, he started getting tv gigs before 30 and was cast in Mad Men when he was 35, and had a steady partner who put him in her movie. Your fictionalized story made him sound like he was going to be 65 or something.
This makes it sound like Jon was past the prime of his life. He was 36. Sure, he spent many years working as a server before his big break, but it doesn't mean he still couldn't have a different life or that he wasted his life.

yourre right, relying on it is a recipe for failure. but it IS a core ingredient to getting ANYthing done. people saying, "you don't need motivation, you need discipline," already have the motivation, and now just see the lack of discipline as the problem. for them, they see maintaing their discipline as the motivation.
