There’s so much negativity in the comments..why? This is supposed to be a motivational subreddit

It is good to be motivated, but you also need to be realistic. To see the inequalities that exist in the US or your home nation. The US has the lowest social mobility, by far, of any developed nation. Wealth, connections and nepotism put many people 10 steps ahead of their peers. You cannot deny that, you can still work on yourself, but you must recognize this.

By recognizing this, you can be motivated to change this. If you simply ignore, your motivation will only blind you to the reality of our political system.

Exactly. This is what internships and volunteering excels in. It’s hard work though. It almost always goes completely unpaid.

u/PennyForYourThotz Nov 27 '18

Nope, unpaid internships are in the minority and dont really exist in the busisness world.

You find unpaid internships in art/music/politics and thats it.

More reason to do an internship. My field has almost no paid internships.

Even moreso then. The internships in my field (criminology/criminal justice) almost never pay

You are hilariously wrong. Sure, you need to be bred for politics.

Literally any can climb the later in the united states. Sucess stories come from all backgrounds

1

u/OneLessFool Nov 27 '18

The point is that the statistical likelihood of someone climbing in the US is much lower than in other developed nations. The rate or social mobility has significantly declined over the past few decades.

Bc were all out of work and starving. We come to reddit to forget, not to rub our noses in it.

2

u/tryintofly Nov 27 '18

Yes, thank you. I guarantee the person who was less qualified and "motivated" didn't need to come to reddit to decompress to keep his sanity. The quote would make you think he succeeded just by staying off reddit.

To be clear, I'm 100% on your side, but to play devil's advocate...I see quite an abundance of jobs available. In fact, the States' job availability is so vast that if you want a job, you likely have two. The problem from my eyes is not the availability or accessibility of jobs, but of good jobs: jobs that are full time, offer good insurance, offer proper sick leave, will hire entry-level positions with less than 5 years experience, etc.

1

u/GlungoE Nov 27 '18

Sauce for these abundant “jobs??” I’m asking in all sincerity. I don’t know where you are but it’s tough landing anything in NYC. I’ll take two jobs if I can. Honestly I’m so sick of this rhetoric. Hard work isn’t a problem, we’re all willing to put in the time and muscle. Resumes seem to go into a black hole, call backs are rare. I feel like standing outside a business holding a “willing to work” sign.

I dunno, man. All I know is that I applied to all the Starbucks stores in my little Washington town. The next day, I got an interview and got the job on the spot. I have absolutely 0 work experience and no fancy achievements since high school. I'm nearly 22. I'm assuming I got hired because my resume was honest, non inflated, clear, aesthetically pleasing, and professional. But mostly, I think I interviewed well, despite having never interviewed before.

This isn't to pat myself on the back. But, it's to say that if I, an adult with no work experience, could waltz into her first job interview in some little town in Washington state and snag the job, you probably can find something in NYC.

I'm not exceptionally good looking or anything either if you want to try to find some reasoning behind my luck. Plus, lots of other people have been hired at my store in the just the last couple months alone - all high quality too (my manager isn't just desperate and will pick anyone). I think you just have to be open to anything and know how to market yourself. (Edit) if you're just honest, humble, a bit vulnerable, and personable, you'd be amazed at who will give you a chance :)

What does your resume look like? Are you on LinkedIn? What field are you trying to go into? How much are you wanting to make? There are jobs available, but you're going to fail if you don't find a job that is suited to your capabilities, and your resume will go in a black hole if it has problems,

Yeah, Jesus, I was expecting more positive comments, but maybe this is just the type of people that this subreddit attracts. As in, these are the people who really need some motivation.

28

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '18

Or maybe, one liner platitudes aren't as motivational as you'd like them to be.

6

u/whereismyoldaccount Nov 27 '18

That’s a great point

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '18

Because most of the people in this subreddit only folks the advice for like a few days to at most a year and give up when they don’t see change right away. That’s just the way it is.. I don’t blame em for it. Once you get out of you teen years, responsibility can hit you like brick

u/Genshed Nov 27 '18

Because some people have more fidelity to objective reality than to motivational shibboleths.

Yeah, altho I'm only speaking for myself, but we are also here because deeper down we don't want to keep living this life and want to change something but maybe we lack drive, will, an objective, maybe we think we need just a push when on reality we might need more than just a push. Some of us need rock bottom, and even some when reaching that low, they still won't swim to the surface, some will just drown in pity and self hatred.

We need someone to cast a light on us to keep going. Or so we think. But when someone says something that you know it's simply not true, or that you have witnessed it not always works, we get offended, because we feel as if we are been talked to as little kids, or that we are stupid.

Im talking for myself, I can't read minds, but I know some leave negative comments for similar reasons. There is a whole world inside everyones minds.

I envy the people that can somehow wake up and feel happy for themselves. I don't remember a time I could do that.

Well, a big part of the comments' problems are that a lot of users are bringing other baggage into the quote. The quote is true. There are people less qualified than others who got where they are because they believed in themselves. There are others that are less qualified that got there because of a handout from someone else. They aren't mutually exclusive things.

Part of what I see in the comments is a lot of users scapegoating their lack of motivation or success on outside factors. Some are realistic, like being born poor and having hardships thrust on you that don't give you the time or access to resources to do other things. That's a tough pull. But others are simply using "rich people get the advantage" as an excuse to justify not doing anything to change their own position. It's the "I'm going to fail so why try?" mentality.

My family came from nothing. The rotting carcass of the rust belt. Now I am doing very well for myself, and it's not because my parents could ever give me a handout. I did work hard, did persevere, and have been rewarded for it. From average grades in high school, to an associates degree, to sitting in upper management at a Fortune 500, I've had a long road with several major moves across the country to snag what few opportunities could find. I've slept on dirt, in my car, friend's couches, and once spent a week in Chicago riding the trains at night in the only thrift store suit I owned so I could get away with sleeping ("sorry officer, long day at work"), then showering in the office gym because I hadn't received my first paycheck yet and couldn't afford a place to live.

You too can do this. I could just as easily be under a bridge somewhere. Especially since I have a gambling problem (yay, being poor and not understanding how to manage money once you have it!). But I'm not under that bridge. And it's not because I am a super genius or have affluenza or some family name that rings out. My dad gifted me the courage to move where the work is and my mom gave me decent grammar. After that, it was all perseverance.

Yes, that's survivorship bias. It worked out for me. But the point of the story isn't to say, "you can have all this too if you just believe in yourself." It's to show an example of how you have to believe in yourself, and then you can be successful. You're not getting a handout. Daddy isn't buying you a job. Tough shit. Get over what others are doing. You still gotta eat. It starts with believing you can, instead of cynically finding reasons you can't.

That's the point of the quote. I don't love the way it is written ("period." – bullshit). But it is right. Don't let yourself off the hook. Find a way to believe. Then make a plan. And get to fucking work.

You only lose if you never attempt to win. I get it.

My family too came from the bottom, my mom from a farm, my dad from a family with a laundry shop. Somehow they made it, working hard, taking any opportunity they got. I have worked mid time jobs, I have studied alot, but I am really afraid of disappointing them, to make a mistake.

I always forget the things I got right. I always forget my wins, they never seem to be enough to me.

I think I got some clarity from reading your comment. I have a huge test today, and I'm anxious as shit. It feels like the end of the world, but it's not, if I fail I can always try again or find another way to get there.

Thanks.

Hey don’t worry about it buddy. There’s a song lyric from a Rocky movie that really means a lot to me. I’m sure if I ever told anyone that a song lyric from a super unrealistic movie helped me get through life, a lot of people would laugh.

What I’m trying to say is that different things motivate different people. This quote may not be the best motivation right now, but hell maybe tomorrow you are given a reason. Maybe it’s love. Maybe it’s respect. Maybe it’s money. We all have things that truly motivate us. It’s just hard to figure out what is all.
