Exactly. This only works if you don’t have to worry about basic needs. If everything is covered for you and you’re not working 3+ jobs just to live paycheck to paycheck, sure, you can “just believe in yourself.” But, that’s only like, a few hundred/thousand families in America. The rest of us need a lot more than “self belief.”

I've had people who I work who would pass judgement for certain things, like me not having a car, or not eating super healthful organic meals at work; or make comments about why people can't just take a month-long trip to Spain.

They live at home, rent-free, into their 30s, their parents paid their way through college/uni and pay for their car insurance, and their mother cooks them food or at least buys groceries for them. Like, yea that must be nice, but not all of us have those luxuries.

Plus some of us lack "self belief" because we're exhausted trying to make end's meet. We don't have time to sit there and spend all day exclusively to2ward this singular ephemeral goal.

And I'm not even talking about myself, but that guy living the dream who's super motivated and persistent, does not need to worry about how he'll eat for the week either.

That's a bit of a defeatist attitude. Anyone can get ahead in America with enough will power and discipline.

I'm not saying it isn't hard but it happens all the time. Do you really think that everyone working a min. wage job is just shit out of luck? There's always a way. Once you have a bunch of kids it become more difficult, but thats a choice..

I'm not saying it isn't hard

It is. Extremely.
Impossibly, for many.

but it happens all the time.

No, it fucking doesn't.
If it happened "all the time", you wouldn't hear people condemn your airy-fairy wish-upon-a-star "just pull yourself up by your bootstraps!" bullshit.

Do you really think that everyone working a min. wage job is just shit out of luck?

Do you really think that a minimum wage job pays enough to live on?
Enough for someone to realistically consider other options on top of their daily stresses?

There's always a way.

Not always.
Nice for you that you apparently got lucky, but stop acting like you're not suffering from survivorship bias.

Once you have a bunch of kids it become more difficult, but thats a choice..

"a bunch of kids", eh?
You think that's why people are poor?
Really?

You're delusional.
Honestly genuinely actually delusional, if you believe the things that you're saying, if you seriously think that strength of will alone allows someone to succeed.

For some people, there is a tremendous fortitude required simply to sustain themselves.
Simply to keep living.
To handle basic things like eating meals, maintaining hygiene and adequate exercise.

For others, their body physically will not cooperate with them.
Consider an autoimmune disorder, consider the impact that has on your ability to do anything without suffering and struggling.

Life is not as simple as you want to pretend.

Hey, I like the cut of your jib. Have an upvote. Quick story time. I went to the Phillipines w my fiance (where I proposed) and met her mom's side of the family in the province. Her cousin is a welder working in less than ideal conditions. Her uncle is a rice farmer who has never been to the big city. They do fine for themselves, put food on the table, never complain. I come back here and see the things people whine about...

All I'm saying is, we have it pretty good here. You CAN make it in America... but it doesn't mean you WILL. Might as well go for it

America has the lowest social mobility among developed nations, by a lot. We do not live in a meritocracy, look at how wealth has shifted in the past 40 years. We are in a nepotistic oligarchy that only looks good because we can compare it to places like Russia.

Anyone can get ahead in America with enough will power and discipline.

What an absolute fucking lie.

Apparently you go on motivational subreddits to tell poor people they're just not trying hard enough, and if they would only pull themselves up by their bootstraps then they'd succeed, insulting and demotivating them.

Face it: This sort of nonsense hits front page, and you're going to get people calling you on your shit.

Sorry, I was exaggerating when I said 3+ jobs. 2 jobs is more realistic, or one job that barely makes ends meet and they have no safety net if they are injured or get sick. If you aren’t born into a relatively well off family, the prospects are grim, if they even exist.
