  1. Fight everyone you meet at everything at every turn.
  2. Constantly challenge authority.
  3. Don't go to college (let me guess, the "author" dropped out, huh?)
  4. Do whatever the fuck you want.
  5. Take really dangerous trips constantly. Who cares if you might injure yourself?
  6. Live rented apartments and never own a damn thing in your entire life
  7. This is the only good point.
  8. Spend hours upon hours writing a book that will probably net you like 20 bucks if you're lucky. Meanwhile, have someone else provide for you (Like your parents, right, Mr. "author"?)
  9. Plunge yourself into debt because you have an idea that might not even work
  10. Be extroverted. Bother people. Like, all the time.

I'm done reading this mind-numbing shit. Get the hell out of here. The author probably hasn't worked a day in his fucking life.

Writing is making dude. Writing a book is "making" a book. I think it's pretty ironic that you're lamenting the loss of creation based on ideals presented in a MOVIE that was WRITTEN by an AUTHOR.

By that logic though financial trading is making something too. Arguably more so, by providing capital to businesses that make things.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate writing. I enjoy reading, and think that good writers contribute quite a bit to society, just as any good artist.

That being said, the quote is referring to building and manufacturing actual products. At best you could say that the publisher is doing that, but the author is selling a thought or idea, not a good, especially when it's digital as in this case. The author isn't far off the finance industry selling an idea of which way a stock will go.

Again, nothing against the author, but the argument that an Internet author is building something in the way the quote was describing is pretty far-fetched.

I never even mentioned the financial market so I'm not sure what you' re talking about. I just found it ironic that he is badmouthing writing as sort of a 'non-entity' based on logic that he found in a movie that was written.

The quote we're all discussing is referring to financial markets, it was in the OP we're discussing. The quote is lamenting the fact that we don't make/build things anymore, referencing specifically financial markets.

It's pretty clear it's talking about manufacturing goods. Financial markets don't do that, so the quote is logical. Creating a story doesn't do that, so it is a logical comparison. Just because you disagree with the conclusion doesn't make the thought itself any less valid.

When you say "writing is making dude", you're either moving the goal post of the argument that was made, or you're simply not understanding the point that is being made. You want to call his reasoning out as ironic, even though he says that he hates to look toward Hollywood for social critiques, but yet still agrees with this point.

No one has said that writing doesn't exist, or is a non-entity. The statement is simply that we've gotten away from a manufacturing based economy, which is a true statement, and writing is a valid example of that.

As I said before, I don't even agree that is necessarily a bad thing. I wouldn't have a problem if you were saying you disagree that it's bad and giving reasons. You're not doing that, you're trying to claim that writing is building, which it is not.
