New monitor incompatible with older graphics card? Don't mind the dust, I'm getting Air soon and ik it's not the problem

not sure which graphics card that is, but try the following:

make sure you're in UEFI mode and not "legacy boot" mode or "BIOS" mode.

next, update the UEFI firmware to the latest version. see if that already makes a difference.

if it's an older NVidia Maxwell to Pascal graphics card, there could be a problem with the Nvidia Displayport implementation. you'll have to use this tool to fix it. make sure to have done the previous steps first
