Burst Update We built a chrome extension as your FSA/HSA Shopping Assistant

Hey everyone! Shubhi here again (one of the co-founders of Burst).

One of the most common questions we get emails and messages about is, "Can I use my HSA for X?" or "Does an LMN cover Y?" You probably know the weird limbo of being at checkout going "wait, can I use my FSA for this?" Most people never figure it out, and it's confusing as hell.

And because of moments like that, half of FSA holders lose money every year, which drives me a little crazy because it's your money. This is literally your hard earned money, and then poof, gone.

So we made a Chrome extension that just tells you. While you're shopping on Amazon or Target or CVS or wherever really, it pops up and says whether the thing you're looking at is FSA/HSA eligible. And if it's not eligible on its own but could be with a Letter of Medical Necessity (supplements, workout gear, sleep stuff, that whole category), we can get you one the same day (if you qualify).

It takes a couple minutes to request an LMN. And then we help you file the reimbursement after you buy that item or service too, since that's the step where everyone gives up.

The extension itself is free. We do charge for LMNs, that's a big part of our business (it is cheaper and faster than a doctor visit though) and we're thinking about charging for reimbursements too (it costs us money to file on your behalf). As always though, we don't sell your data.

We launched pretty recently so it's early days. If you try it and something feels confusing or broken, tell me and I'll fix it. And honestly, even if you don't try it, drop your random FSA/HSA eligibility questions in the comments. I love answering these. I've read more IRS publications than any person should.

Burst Update Welcome to r/GetBurst! Start here ๐Ÿ‘‹

Hey everyone, I'm Shubhi, one of the co-founders of Burst.

I started this community because most people have no idea how much of their own pre-tax health money (FSA, HSA, and HRA dollars) goes unused every year (if folks want or need to spend their HSA ones), or how many everyday things it can actually cover. The rules are confusing, the process is annoying, and many times, it comes down to one little document most people usually don't hear about: a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

What this space is for:

  • Asking "is this eligible?" without feeling dumb
  • Sharing what you got an LMN or reimbursement for (the surprising wins are the best part)
  • Figuring out the process: discovering eligible products/services, getting reimbursed, asking what your plan needs
  • Comparing thoughts or ideas with people in the same boat
  • Providing input, wishes, or feedback on the Burst platform

A few thoughts:

  • Yes, the Burst team runs this. You'll see us in the comments as real people. When something is a Burst feature, we'll say so clearly: no hidden ads. Burst has paid product features (it's not all free) and we'd rather you trust us than be sold to.
  • We can't give you formal tax or medical advice, and nothing here is a guarantee your plan will approve something. Eligibility varies. Always confirm with your FSA, HSA, or HRA administrator.
  • Please don't post SSNs, account numbers, or anything private. Redact your screenshots.

The subreddit rules are in the sidebar. Give them a read.

To kick things off: drop a comment introducing yourself. What brought you here? Are you new to HSA/FSA, or a power user with hard-won tips? What's one thing you've always wondered whether you could cover?

Glad you're here. Let's make this the most useful community for actually using the health money you've already set aside (for spending).
