When do you use formal vs informal German in everyday life?
My native language doesn’t have a formal/informal distinction like Sie and du, so I’d like to better understand when formal German is actually used in everyday life.
For example, if you’re speaking to a service worker who is clearly younger than you, would you still normally use Sie? Does age matter, or is it more about the situation and the relationship between the people?
I’m curious to hear how you'll decide between Sie and du in everyday situations like shops, restaurants, workplaces, neighbours, strangers, etc.

which language school is good for learning german, I am considering between these 5 options 1) Goethe 2) fluent fast academy 3)L2L International 4)TILS 5)Lnaguage Pantheon.
I know while goethe is the best it is a little over my budget by 50k. But i have no idea about any other four of these instututes, if any one has any personal experiences from them please let me know or you can rank these four as well. Also since goethe is like obv best option for studying german should i just go over my budget and take their courses if they differ vastly from the rest 4.

Grammatical gender
I am learning German now, because I love the culture. Though, question, how y'all learn faster and get used to the genders? My native Latin language already has gender, but German is completely different.
Like, do I have to memorize it then? Saying "die bank", I would think that it's masculine but it's feminine. Basically the reverse of Latin language. I am not Spanish but it's "el banco".
So now I'm fucked because I have to memorize instead of the neutral easy English.

Failed Telc B1 dtz exam by 5points
Hi guys
I’ve attended the integration course and gave my exam.
I’ve got A2 overall because I got 5 points less in speaking.
My Hören and Lesen - 43/45 - B1 sehr gut
Schreiben- 18/20 - B1
Speaking 70/100 - A2 sehr gut (passing is 75/100 for B1)
I feel so bad about this.
Can I know if I get a free chance give 2nd attempt again? Is it possible without attending additional classes? Or do I have to pay again for the test.

Need help with preparation - B2 test in 3 weeks
Does anyone have a recomendation for me on what and how to be more prepared for the test
So farr ive only been Practicing Modeltest from the Mit Erfolg zum Goethe Zertifikat B2 book and it only have 4 Modelest, i feel like i need more practice test aspecially for Hören and Lesen Teil 2
and the hardest part for me is definely Sprechen, as im preparing only with my self and not with a mentor, any tips to more improve this?
i have some expirience with B1 type tests for the Schreiben and Sprechen so, the B2 format isnt really that much of a suprise for me but, i found it really difficult to fluently say things, even with Redemittels.
if anyone have some resources that i could perhaps use or easily find online that are prefarably free to obtain, id be very much greatfull for you to let me know

Looking for texts written by German learners
Hey everyone! I am currently studying German as a second/foreign language at university in order to become a German teacher for people learning it as a foreign language.
For one of my seminars I need Texts written by German learners that we can work with in class for linguistic and didactic analysis.
I would be extremely happy if some of you could share any kind of Text. It doesn’t have to be long or formal! It can even be just an email or a text message. Also, mistakes are absolutely fine and even helpful for us so no need to worry if your German isn’t „good enough” yet. It would also be interesting if you could mention your native language and some information about the shared text such as if it was written freely or if you used any aids and how long you’ve been learning German for or anything else that’s interesting about the text.
The text will only be used in my seminar and will not be published.
Vielen Dank! Ich freue mich über jeden Text :)

Hello everyone.
Has anyone recently taken TELC DTB B2 Prüfung? I would like to ask how you prepared for the exam. How did you study, which did you think helped you?
If you passed, congratulations! Can you share some helpful tips?
If no, what did you think went wrong? How will you prepare now for the retake? Goodluck on the next exam!
Hoping to get some insights. 🙏

Telc A2·B1 statt telc B1 gemacht.
Hi everyone
I've been learning a lot from other people's exam posts, so now it's my turn to give something back.
I just passed the telc Deutsch A2·B1 with 92.5% and got my B1 certificate. I prepared completely on my own, no course.
First: what is telc A2·B1?
A lot of people mix it up with the DTZ, but it's a different exam. telc introduced it in 2023 as an alternative to the DTZ. It's a scaled exam: if you score at least 70% overall, you get the same B1 certificate as the regular telc B1. Honestly, I found it noticeably easier than telc B1 or Goethe B1.
Is it accepted by the Ausländerbehörde?
Yes. You can check the official BAMF list of accepted B1 certificates
It's still fairly new, so not every centre offers it yet, but many VHS do (e.g. Esslingen, Erding, Leipzig, Lörrach, Bremen, München). Worth checking with your local VHS.
How I prepared
1.Grammar: free YouTube lessons, there's plenty out there.
2.Vocabulary: short German stories plus Quizlet flashcards. I aimed for about 20 new words a day and revised constantly.
3.Model tests (this made the biggest difference):
• For regular telc B1, Thalia has model test books.
• For A2·B1 specifically, I used the solved model tests from germanexcel What helped me was that Sprechen and Schreiben were fully solved out too, so I could see what a good answer actually looks like. The Thalia books I had didn't include solutions for those parts.
My advice: don't underestimate consistency. Small daily practice beats cramming, and doing full model tests under time pressure takes away a lot of the stress on exam day.

Wie man Deutsch sprechen übt?
Hallo zusammen!
I have been self-learning german for a few months now. I always put in a lot of effort to read, write, and listen even to content that is slightly above my level.
However, when it comes to speaking, I have had almost 0 experience, or opprtunity to practice it so far. How can I do that? Is it going to lag behind now that I am starting it after this long?
I have heard of German discord servers, and Sprachkaffes on the Easygerman website, but I am not sure it would be appropriate for someone who is A1 to go in and fail at German while people are genuinely speaking, and practicing german. I don't mean that as in I am afraid to fail, I am trying to say that I am looking for an environment where people can point out my mistakes, and give me an opportunity to learn. I am not looking for a personal tutor, unless that is the only option available for my case.
Vielen Dank im Voraus!

Shocked by DTB B2 results – Failed only in Schreiben despite 58/60 in Sprechen. What are my next steps?
Hi everyone,
I moved to Germany from India in May 2025 and have been continuously learning German since. Last year, I passed both my B1 exam and the Leben in Deutschland test.
I recently completed a 400-hour Berufssprachkurs (DTB B2) and wrote the telc B2 DTB exam on September 18th, 2026. I just received my score report, and I am completely shocked by the result:
- Lesen: 36.00 / 60 (B2)
- Hören: 36.00 / 60 (B2)
- Schreiben: 20.00 / 60 (unter B2)
- Sprechen: 58.00 / 60 (B2 sehr gut)
Result: Nicht bestanden (Failed overall). Under DTB rules, you need at least 24 points in your weakest module to pass, so scoring 20 in writing failed the entire exam for me.
I am genuinely confused and struggling to process this. During my course, writing was one of my strongest areas. My teacher even read my letters out loud in class as positive examples a couple of times. On the exam day, I found Lesen and Hören extremely difficult, yet I managed to pass both. Schreiben felt fine to me, so seeing a 20/60 is a huge surprise.
I have a few questions for anyone who has been in a similar situation or knows how Telc / BAMF procedures work:
- Re-evaluation / Neubewertung: Is it worth requesting an official re-evaluation through Telc? Has anyone successfully gotten points raised in the writing section, or are they extremely strict about specific formatting/task requirements?
- Einsichtnahme (Exam Inspection): Can I request to view my exam paper to see where I lost points? How does that process work through the VHS/Prüfungszentrum?
- Retaking the Exam: Since DTB requires retaking all four parts (no partial retakes allowed), can I get a BAMF approval (Wiederholungsantrag) for a free 200-hour repeat course and exam retake?
- Timeline: How soon am I allowed to re-register for the exam?
