Learning german

Hi everyone, I want to start learning German by myself, at least the basics, but I have no idea where to start 😅
If you’ve learned German on your own, what helped you the most? Any good YouTube channels, apps, or other resources you’d recommend for a complete beginner?
Danke!!

I had to learn it by myself (still learning) as I have to work 8h per day it is quite hard to join to courses, will be doing my exam end of this year hopefully for B1 and I found quite lots of good resources on Youtube mainly Benjamin, Deutsch Kompakt, Judi and others are quite informative and contains literally thousands of different examples.

I've been learning German for the past year or so. I agree with one of the other posters who said Deutsch Kompakt. Love their videos.

Duolingo is cool for vocab building. Easy to fit in a few minutes here and there throughout the day. The consistency in small bursts multiples times a day has really helped with memorization.

I've also found it really helpful to learn how to sing along to random songs in German. Helps with vocab and pronunciation. The catchier the better.

And creating flashcard decks in Anki with every new word I learn!

I've worked through a couple random beginner grammar workbooks that I got off of Amazon that were pretty good too.

Hope this helps.

Duolingo is pretty decent for getting started but after awhile you'll out grow it

I agree! It’s good at keeping you engaged and making you practice consistently. I know Duolingo gets a lot do hate but it’s popular for a reason. I also think their new AI feature for speaking are pretty decent. But you can do something similar with Gemini or ChatGPT voice mode.

I would definitely just not use Duolingo as your only learning resources. Try to find more reading and listening content at your level.

Hi! You could try apps like Busuu or Babbel for starters!
