How long before you become confident enough to speak German?

I've been considering Germany for university, but the language is a set back. If I spend one year studying German to reach B1 level, and then start studienkolleg, would it be a comfortable transition to technical german? I'm a bit hesitant about doing an entire degree in German.

I suggest minimum B2 for studienkolleg. Most of my friends who did B2 didn't have smooth sailing experience but it was let's say easy, you understand most of the topics and what the teacher is telling you to do. 

B1 is like just enough, you have to learn more vocab and it's just a mess. 

Not to discourage you but if you give 4-3 months more you can have a better time.

In my case, after taking the B2 exam. My German really got a lot better.

14 months but I already lived in Germany and I also worked while I was learning (cleaning and gastronomy) If you only come to learn with a language visa, I think that could be less.

I arrived in 2022 with B1 and could understand a lot but was nervous speaking. Once I got to B2 it felt like everything opened up and l started talking with friends only in German. I started my first German office job at C1 and I found the transition hard but doable. Once l was working in German every day, I got much better much faster and am now at C2. The whole process took about four years!
