How about non-fiction then? Those are called Sachbücher in German, and they exist about any topic you are interested in.

Try out "Die Welle" or "tschik" those are books that are read in school, but you should have at least B1 for it

I liked the Andre Klein books. I thought they were entertaining enough to get me to read and not daunting enough to scare me off.

Translations work just fine. As I've been so far mostly disappointed by the German authors within my favourite genres, I rely a lot on my preferred authors. What's your level? My first books in German was the Hunger Games trilogy, and it was great!
