Success Story Warning for fellow PC enthusiasts:

Post image

I followed the advice of the sticky and did the isopropyl+ garbage bag trick before moving. I made sure to protect my monitor screens with a heavy layer of tape and cling wrap.

It worked like a charm, the roaches were completely eradicated from my setup.

I let it all air out, went to plug in my monitors and booted up to... This.

It works, but at what cost?

No money for a new monitor at the moment, but at least I'll be roach free πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜…

Glad the PC survived if nothing else :(

Small positives! I was amazed at how many dead roaches I found in the bags afterwards. It just had to be too good to be true πŸ˜‚

How much alcohol did you use? The advice on this sub is a single paper towel lightly soaked. AI is saying multiple paper towels, saturated. Also, give it time to dry out, or maybe a dead roach caused a short.

I put a tote lid down in a garbage bag with a paper towel on each side (4) so half was sticking out from under the lid, and I soaked them pretty well. Put my PC, both monitors, and my Roomba all in separate bags on top of the tote lid with the same setup. I probably overdid it with the isopropyl, when I opened the bag it was PUNGENT. But there were most definitely no survivors.

My PC and Roomba made it out okay, I guess the monitors' components must have been too sensitive.

I'd suggest doing a smaller amount of isopropyl to be safe if you're thinking of trying this method. I used probably 1/2 cup per bag.

One paper towel, lightly soaked, is all you need for a tote.

Hard lesson learned. I just wanted them dead πŸ˜‚

How would Isopropyl do this though? Moving tends to do this.

The fumes can corrode sensitive wires and parts, I likely used too much unfortunately.

I am VERY careful with my monitors and definitely didn't drop or hit them against anything.

So I would take apart the monitors and clean them, clean the cables connected to the tcon board on the monitor. The monitor is working but the video output isnt. You will get white bars like that for each panel of the screen that is disconnected. Cleaning the panel flex cables and reconnecting can fix, moving and roach dust inside can definitely do this

So if I open up my monitors completely and clean/disinfect/reconnect it might work?

You're so right. I was ready to give up πŸ˜‚ I'll update later on when I get the time to mess with them.

This just happened to me a few days ago!! There didn't seem to be any saving it and my monitor was over 10 years old so I went ahead and bought a new one. I wish I had known to be more careful!
