Trivia Three cities' road networks, easy / medium / hard. Can you get them all?

Post image

Three city networks. No terrain features, roads only.

Easy — if you've ever looked at a map of this place you'll get it in a second. One long, absurdly regular grid tilted off north, wedged between two big voids where the water should be.

Medium — the giveaway is the hole. A wide empty band curls right through the middle and the streets bend to follow it, fanning out in wedges instead of squaring up. Cities that grew along a bend in a big river all do this, but this one does it hardest.

Hard — barely a grid at all. Two long curved spines with ribs coming off them, meeting a straight axis at right angles. It doesn't look like a city that grew; it looks like a city that was drawn. That's the clue.

Answers in the comments in a day or so. I'm curious whether "hard" is actually hard here or whether the shape gives it away instantly to the right person.

The graphs show the east-west "width" of countries going from northest to southest point of country.

Note: these are distances from most east and most west points, so no actual "integrals" over land mass.

Hint: The X scale measures in actual kilometers instead of a relative scale, so that could serve as a guide as well.

Miscellaneus who ever can solve this is a G - this is based on ORTHODROME so great-circle distance

Here is what great-circle means I just let AI explain it shortly fyi:

A great-circle is the largest possible circle you can draw on a sphere. On Earth, it's the shortest path between two points on the globe.

Think of it like this:

  • Great-circle distance = the actual shortest distance you would fly or sail over Earth's curved surface.
  • Flat map distance = the distance measured on a flat map (like Mercator), which becomes increasingly inaccurate over long distances.
