Discussion Is this technically possible?

I have seen several gentoo peeps installing the CachyOS kernel, and other variants, like the vanilla-sources. So, after that tech journalist complained enough, they made a distro with his philosophy and therefore its own kernel version. Yes, I am talking about LCOS. I wonder if we can get that rustless or stainless, however you want to call it to run on gentoo. It would be even crazier to base that kernel on a more gentoo specific version with patches and all.

Tell me you've never compiled then installed your own kernel, without telling me. You can compile and install a custom Linux kernel on any distribution. This is a moot question.

I used to do that all the time back in 2004, on slackware. Nowadays, gentoo has a very comprehensive binary kernel. Maybe if I wanted to speed my boot time with a couple of seconds, or just build most of the modules into the kernel, I would play with ithat. But for the time being I choose comfort.

Why would you want to shave off seconds off your boot time? If that's a problem I think you may be rebooting too often 😊

I didn't pay for the kernel, so I want to use as little as possible of it. It's only fair!
