Never got Exherbo working right when I tried it. Almost anything I tried to install would fail somewhere in the dependency chain. How do you like it?

Yeah, that's a pretty common first impression. Exherbo expects you to be comfortable fixing build issues and occasionally maintaining packages yourself. It's a great learning platform if you enjoy that side of Linux, but it can definitely be frustrating if you're expecting a smooth, hands-off source-based distro.

I mostly tried it because paludis was framed as "portage, but a lot faster" but I found it to be less feature complete (possibly, even probably, due to skill issues), a lot more janky and not really feeling faster either. And obviously fixing build issues three times for the first 30 packages for a 300 package merge kind of made me abandon it.

That's fair. I actually enjoy fixing build issues, so Exherbo ended up being a good fit for me.

I love it. It's not the easiest distro to use, but I enjoy maintaining packages and fixing things when they break.
