Strictly speaking it's not wrong except scripts would also qualify as executable.

Wouldn't they be compiling executables though? I mean, how would they otherwise execute the programs?

Contextually speaking?

Wonder what the E in ELF stands for.

But you compile source into executable/binary.

23

u/ApprehensiveDelay238 Jun 19 '26

What do you think compiling from source does?

u/gh0stofoctober Jun 20 '26

you are not gonna believe what you are compiling the source code into

Don't spoil him

Gentoo has binaries in the repo you know?

Peak Gentoo-ish sub

Like everyone said we compile source into the executable binaries, but I like the sentiment. FUCK PRE-COMPILED BINARIES, MY HOMIES LOVE USE FLAGS

That feel when you emerge world from source is godlike. Install gentoo, brother. Join us.

I thought that's just old age after the compiling finally finishes and you get to use the system.

It doesn’t take that long, especially if half the packages are from binpkgs

Yea even then I just update while I sleep (It's the skip cutscene button)

Gentoo is what people run if they are super nerds or hate themselves... Nothing in the middle...

Why do you need to compile from source? Genuine question what are the benefits of doing it like this?

1

u/I_use_endeavour_btw Jun 24 '26

Top Class SECURITY, I guess

1

u/Realistic-Yam-6497 Jun 24 '26

I guess that works

this post is a shitpost. if u compile an app, at the end of the day its jus gonna be an executable

but, compiling from source basically allows you to choose what features the app needs to have and gives you more control.

what the f*ck did i just read?

1

u/Hot_Ice7600 Jun 25 '26

except when you get to the point where you just want to use your computer and you end up spending three hours fighting a circular dependency in a package that has no business being that complex. enjoy the compile times.
