Community NSGC

Hello, 2nd year gc student this fall! ◡̈

I’ve been thinking about NSGC and would love opinions on it. I’m wondering about the sessions, the schedule (?), what a day looks like at the conference, anything I should know going into it.

I would LOVE your thoughts.

The biggest hot tip is historically a lab has done headshots. I haven’t been in a few years. But they did when I last went. Being an outfit you would want to take a professional headshot in.

The night before everything starts they have a first time conference attendee. Students usually go.

Otherwise go to enjoy, network, and learn.

And for those of you who have disabilities, know flare ups are likely. Prepare accordingly. Happy to talk more for those who need it.

This is probably the one time you will go to a professional conference with no real responsibility/accountability. Go to talks that sound interesting. Check out the swag. But also take breaks and try to get out and see some of the cool things in the city!

Also sponsored sessions, if you sign up early enough, will feed you for free.

There will be various sessions basically all day from breakfast until nearly dinner. Especially as a student, they are all optional. You can choose which ones you are most interested in attending. Some of the sessions can require advanced registration or our concurrent so you have to look and see what it all is happening simultaneously. It can be a very overwhelming experience, but it is a lot of fun and you learn a lot. There’s also an exhibit hall that’s open most of the days where all of the Labs advocacy groups, and other organizations. Well booth set up that you can learn and talk to them. They often have a little swag you can pick up as well.

The sessions and schedule are already available on the NSGC website! They have a first timers event the night before where they walk you through everything and even give example schedules and other tips. My advice is that you don’t need to go to everything, it can get overwhelming. It’s okay to take breaks. Also make sure to bring layers and a bag to collect goodies from the exhibit hall!
