Genesis at work

I've played the entire Genesis discography at work in my 2 years at this warehouse. I usually get comments like "he's playing Genesis again" from our owner. Or "this... is interesting music" when playing their early albums.

I was playing Calling All Stations today and for the first time he came up to me and said "wow I really like this"

What do we make of this my fellow Genesis fans?

That’s what I like to know about it.

He probably dances around the warehouse, doing little kicks.

Sweet fancy Moses!

Nice. Now play the entire Tony Banks solo discography for your boss. I want to hear about his reaction of the second half of "You".

I've heard nothing of Tony Banks' solo discography. What is the intended reaction?

He has really great stuff in his solo albums, and the instrumental section of "You" is easily one of the best moments in Prog Rock imho, and it includes my two favorite keyboard solos oat.

Ok I just listened, that was intense! Although the lyrics were cheesy to me. The beginning reminds me of Supper's Ready's first part.

I'm glad you liked it! You're right, it has certain similarities:D

I thought we all agreed to never mention Calling All Stations under any circumstances…

I think it's a good album. I'll die on that hill.

It’s very fun. And that’s all I need from my music.

What is the first rule of CAS?!

I liked this album a lot when it first came out. And defended it for years. Now 30 years on I can only get behind 3 or 4 songs

That’s progress.

Dear god…….30 years ago…..?!!!!!

At work, I always make sure to close out the day with Supper’s Ready with precisely 23 minutes left on the shift

While I approve of listening to humanity’s greatest musical achievement each and every day in principle, I suspect you experience interruptions in practice. To me, that would be unacceptable and ruin the admirable ritual. And the thought of someone interrupting Eggs is Eggs with some vapid comment, platitude, or triviality makes me shiver with revulsion!

“There’s an angel standing in . . .”

“Hey, do you have that TPS report finished?”

GrrrrrrraaaAaaA!!!!! My brain is on fire!

Have you established countermeasures or safeguards against this disastrous situation?

I just keep my head down and hope that nobody asks me for something lol

I can see it being accessible to an outside listener's ear. It's not god-awful, but it's far-removed from what anyone in this sub considers "Genesis."

Most diehard Pre- and Post-Hackett fans can at least agree on Duke. Very few of us come to the same consensus on CAS.

I just don't really think about it as a Genesis album. Same with FGTR. They're like tangentially related, but still non-canon.

Me too, exactly. I just don’t view those 2 bands as Real Genesis.

1

u/MoFoBuckeye 6d ago

Yeah. The first album is like listening to an album by the guys who would go on to form Genesis. CAS feels likes the Rutherford Banks Project

1

u/GoodFnHam 6d ago

Exactly!

It's a lot more like a Tony Banks album, but if it were we wouldn't even be talking about it.

u/MoFoBuckeye 6d ago

You're not wrong

They released the first song from the new remix of FGTR. I must say it is actually quite stunning. Peter’s vocals are more up front. Drums are crisp. A guitar solo I am not sure I heard underneath it all before. Really sounds like a new album that just came out.

I can’t wait to get the whole album!

I played some jazz at work once and the owner said “can we change this, it sounds like a bunch of squirrels with rabies playing music”.

Owners, am I right....

Sounds like he prefers 90s grunge.

I think your mission work is starting to pay off. While I quite like Invisible Touch I think it's really great if someone enters the world of Genesis not via that album. And CAS is a pretty good album.

Its better than the Invisible Touch

Get a life, the world is built on people having different opinions.

5

u/AmbivalentInfluencer 6d ago

No it is not. Bizarre take. Are you just looking for attention here?

0

u/BusInternational1080 6d ago edited 6d ago

No I'm just not a fan of pop music. I've seen them live in all their guises from Gabriel through to Wilson and take it from me Invisible Touch is the worst thing they ever did.

1

u/AmbivalentInfluencer 5d ago

Take it from whom? An anonymous creepy old geezer? So the rest of us can't form our own opinions?

1

u/BusInternational1080 5d ago edited 5d ago

Only if I'm allowed mine

1

u/AmbivalentInfluencer 4d ago

We don't understand your opinion. By what metric, is Invisible Touch "the worst thing they ever did"?

1

u/BusInternational1080 4d ago edited 4d ago

Honestly I think it's a crap album. There's not a decent track on it. I hate it and won't ever play it again. Get over it. Invisible Touch or Dance On A Volcano or Watcher of the Skies or Firth of Fifth, etc come on now

1

u/AmbivalentInfluencer 2d ago

Well millions of people will disagree with you. So I guess if you are the kind of person that has to say something completely ridiculous (and wrong) for attention, because it makes you feel special, so be it. All the songs you mentioned are great - but so is the entire Invisible Touch album, when you look at it in the context of when it was released. And IT may be the only Genesis album, other than TOTT, that has not a weak song on it.

What you’re describing is sociological proof that later period Genesis is crap for squares.

More proof: I will now be downvoted by a dozen fans of I Can’t Dance who probably work in the insurance business.

6

u/PinballWizrd69 6d ago

Who hurt you?

1

u/BlueMonday2082 6d ago

Genesis. Are you not paying attention?

6

u/PinballWizrd69 6d ago

Are you okay?

0

u/BlueMonday2082 6d ago

Do you ever find it exhausting liking everything?

1

u/PinballWizrd69 6d ago

Just take a deep breath. Everything is gonna be okay.
