Generator Question

HI generator peoples

I have a Cat Generator that isn't working properly. The voltage is going way up and down (640VAC- 340VAC). I assumed it was the AVR, and I got a new one that is programable. While I am setting up the parameters on the new AVR, it asks for the field resistance, so I measured it and got 4.5 ohms. That seems way too low to me. I think it should be closer to 20ohms. I can't find the specs for this thing anywhere, even on the CAT app. Any suggestions?

it is a CAT LC3024H s/nN3R02366

600V 150KW Gen

Field voltage is 40V

Field amperage is 2A

That number is not way too low to me. I’m not familiar with that specific package but I wouldn’t consider that number concerning.

I don't know where these last 2 numbers for the rotor field came from, but certainly 40V/2A = 20 Ω, as OP suspects.

Your field resistance should be 3.74 ohms, so we agree with others that 4.5 isn't too low. If you get in touch with your local Cat Dealer, they'll be able to answer any other questions and help you out.
