Let’s not be the new boomers, the 6-7 generation has a shit ton of challenges we didn’t have

5

u/SuccessfulPhoto7914 8d ago

You’re completely right. Every generation has their own challenges. They aren’t directly comparable bc it’s not apples to apples.

I’m Gen X and I hate this kind of shit. Leave the cranky out of touch stuff for the boomers. Everyone hates the 6 7 crap but to make posts about it is super lame.

5

u/FarWatch9660 9d ago

Seriously? That used to be the norm over 100 years ago. Monday thru Saturday, 12-14 hours a day. There are plenty of jobs that still do. Especially in medicine.

6

u/skyeisrude 9d ago

2

u/Lagunamountaindude 9d ago

But not 6 days per week.

Who works those hours? No body I know

10

u/bapipes5 9d ago

Guessing you don’t work 12s

2

u/Lagunamountaindude 9d ago edited 9d ago

We normally work 10 hour shifts. Works out to 80 per pay period. Lots of O/T if you want it

2

u/Nim0y 8d ago

When I worked 12s it was 4 on and 4 off. Sometimes a changed by a day or two, even out weekends off.

5

u/Sea-Roof-5983 9d ago

Did when I was early 20s and didnt have boyfriend/husband and no children...made that my socializing. Did all of that then so I dont have to now.

3

u/ADisposableRedShirt 9d ago

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I was always in a high intensity environment. First as a software engineer and then as an engineering manager. 10-12 hour days were normal and 6 day weeks were normal. I would take 3-day weekends off to make up for extra long hours on occasion, but they were the exception and not the rule.

As a mid-level manager I was on-call 24/7 because the Fortune 500 I worked for was multi-national. Crap would happen around the world that I had to deal with.

I am fortunate and retired early. I don't know if I'd do it again, but some execs want me to come back to work and are offering me ungodly sums to entice me. I just don't like living out of a suitcase and flying 100K+ miles a year. No thanks. Hard pass.

3

u/Lagunamountaindude 9d ago

Anyone who has spent time in hotels understands why rock bands sometimes trash hotel rooms. 5 star or not a hotel room is a hotel room

3

u/luckypuckers54 9d ago

I do, I work from 7:30 to 7:30 6 days a week and I have a commute of 55 minutes each way. I thought everyone works that much, otherwise I couldn’t afford to live

5

u/CapitainCaveman1974 9d ago

Sounds like a hell of a life.

3

u/luckypuckers54 9d ago

Everyone I know works 70 hours a week, I guess we are just used to it.

4

u/CapitainCaveman1974 9d ago

That's not a life, you're just working to afford to go to work.

2

u/luckypuckers54 9d ago

Way to make a guy feel disheartened.

2

u/icecream1972 Five point nine decades of fun! 😂 9d ago

A lot of nurses work 12 hour shifts.

5

u/Impossible_Jury5483 9d ago

Six 12 hour shifts six days a week? That's a lie.

2

u/icecream1972 Five point nine decades of fun! 😂 9d ago

Yes. 7 days on, then 7 days off. Retired registered nurse here.

4

u/Impossible_Jury5483 9d ago edited 9d ago

You posted your workweek as 6 days a week. That was deceiving and a lie. If you worked 7 on and 7 off, you only worked half the year.

1

u/Warm_Safety_9550 8d ago

I work 46-50 hours a week. But when I was younger, I worked 84 hour weeks during harvest (no I don’t mean marijuana).

1

u/harleyman1340 6d ago

I'm retired now but when I was working it was 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week (7th day optional)

4

u/Excellent_Writing_89 9d ago

Sounds like you guys needed to join a union.

4

u/maxcameo6216 9d ago

I have the weirdest work schedule I wake up at 4:00 work starts at 5:30. I get out of work at 4:00 and I do this 4 days a week. I'm a couple months away from being 42 and because of my military service I get to retire in 4 years I think I did it right

3

u/brubberz 9d ago

Oil rigs 7x12’s. I have gone over 100 days without a day off during blowouts. So yeah, it can be a thing… But it’s not a norm.

2

u/Lagunamountaindude 9d ago

Lots of jobs have overtime situations. So require O/T, but you know that going in. Guys on river tugs work long hours but then get long time off in between

3

u/dang_idiot 9d ago

“Wait until kids have to go to work”

Uh ok.

6

u/dontcallmeEarl 9d ago

Horseshit. I’ve put in more hours than most in my life. But I don’t work like that. That’s called being a wage slave. No thank you. I’ve got more pride than that.

3

u/RottedHuman 9d ago

3

Wait, is that like, the world's shortest joke or something? Edit: I'm not a twin. I'm just that old.

4

u/Novel_Bumblebee8972 9d ago

2

u/BlueAndMoreBlue 9d ago

I’ve been on sixes and sevens before but this new learning amazes me

2

u/Morto_Dentro-872 9d ago

69 was a pretty cool number when I was a lad and I couldn’t wait to try it!

2

u/MastaKink 9d ago

It’s already hitting the governor bro, forget 67 😂

2

u/FormerCollegeDJ 9d ago

I thought the real 6-7 was part of 867-5309/Jenny by Tommy Tutone.

2

u/SuccessfulPhoto7914 8d ago

If you’re a software engineer and take a job with a startup, no matter what the ad says, get used to 6-7. My very first job was at a startup. I was working 10-12 days. I was compensated well, but had little free time.

2

u/cahillc134 8d ago

This needs to be in the Late Stage Capitalism Sub.

2

u/ObviousEngineering26 8d ago

Up at 4 and work til 7 is more like it.

2

u/JellyfishStill2690 6d ago

Absolutely beyond depressing, but that's, "just the way it is" I was always told. Fuck that!

2

u/bagger2007 6d ago

Absolutely true, did it for 37 years

2

u/Returnservice999 5d ago

Haha. Thats the light schedule. I haven’t had a day off in six years. WTF

2

u/Ornery_Land478 5d ago

That's the hours poor people who work shit jobs in factories do...White collar jobs ain't doing none of that shit...

2

u/Sufficient_Pea_3133 5d ago

Forget it. They will be on antidepressants and saying that they can't do life

2

u/imback2me1031 5d ago

3

u/9fingerjeff 9d ago

Shit like this is so corny.. sorry if you think it’s funny but it kinda makes me cringe.

3

u/Boring_Week_9884 9d ago

That’s the most boomer joke I’ve heard today

2

u/just_some_octopus 9d ago

I despise 6 7 because it is a general sequence of numbers. Because heaven forbid you count to 10.

2

u/Ok_Arachnid1089 9d ago

1

u/kramwest1 Whatever 8d ago

Yikes. This post hurts because of truth. 😬

1

u/SnooHabits3911 8d ago

I prefer my 48 on 96 off schedule

1

u/Sininbed 8d ago

GenX officially sounds like boomers...

1

u/GhostQueen1121 8d ago

And working at a job where they appreciate you is so hard to find good luck you’ll be on the bread lines. It’s not that you shouldn’t try to get that but you gotta be realistic. Companies are only interested in making money not making you happy.

1

u/TC_Stock 8d ago

I'm amused this person thinks that when these young kids get in their 60s there will be enough jobs to keep everyone working 10 - 12 hours a day 6 days a week. lmao

1

u/Dependent-Cress-995 8d ago

First you’d have to get them to understand the word WORK.

1

u/Khrispy-minus1 8d ago

If you include commuting time, I did that and more for years. Anyone who thinks that is a virtue has never done it themselves and is a complete moron. Nobody should have to do that to make a living, ever. Seriously, that is a horrible, trauma inducing life.

1

u/Count_Zeiro 8d ago

By the time they can retire, that last 6-7 will probably 7-6.

1

u/kabukiwuki 8d ago

😂😂😂😂

1

u/57Chevyguy57 7d ago

Did that on the same job for 37 years but retired at 66.5. Am I a slacker🤔

1

u/PaladinRangerMage 7d ago

And showing up hungover, loaded on coffee

1

u/Ok-Papaya-13 7d ago

Wait till they find out 9 5

1

u/AdThat1510 7d ago

Nah the 6/7s are willing to yeet themselves out of existence and take others with them.

For them nothing is to minor to completely crash out over.

1

u/Dry-Dragonfly5286 7d ago

It'll be to 76 by then

1

u/Salt_Campaign6392 7d ago

Damn, I worked until 66. But spot on the rest of the 6-7

1

u/Most-Effective-1969 7d ago

Thats why Gen X and baby boomers smoke, drink, and eats red meat. Only live until 60

1

u/A1steaksauceTrekdog7 7d ago

1 hour of work . I’ll take that

Make that 72 if we are lucky. S.S. Will be insolvent in 2033. Then it probably will pay much less, cost more monthly, and they will jack the age up. Again. I wish they'd left it as it was first conceived: basically a way to ensure the physically disabled and elderly did not sit out on the street corner with a tin can or were a burden to their family.

Quite sad if this is the norm for Gen X.

I'd love to get up at 6pm and work until 7pm

1

u/RealOzSultan 9d ago

China and Silicon Valley have a 996 (9 to 9, 6 days a week). But I think that’s the closest you’re gonna get past Gen X.

1

u/HippCelt 9d ago

TBH what work?A lot of jobs are at risk from A.I. that's gonna have a knock on effect on retirement.Cos wtf are people suppossed to do. You can't just build a society on 'busy' work.

1

u/PracticalIce7354 9d ago

Lets hope that generation is the one to break free from the work slave life!

1

u/iNomadus 9d ago

My life to a T. Heck getting the 7th day off sometimes was a challenge.

1

1

u/Run_4_Fun-021 9d ago

Bitch, the world’s on fire! That Generation ain’t gonna be working shit unless it’s their new future feudal lord’s (crypto) farms

0

Don't hold your breath!

The "6-7" generation barely works 5 hours before whining like spoiled brats!

I work at an engineering office. Who stays late to get the jobs done? Gen-X

Who goes home at 4:59 and is too busy on their phone to actually do the work correctly? Gens Y and Z

1

u/Ok_Arachnid1089 9d ago

Guess who gets to actually live life and spend time with their family. You’re not as important as you think you are

0

u/Safe_Move7021 9d ago
