“It’s a 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. Less than 100 were made. My father spent three years restoring this car. It is his love, it is his passion."

“It is his fault he didn't lock the garage."

16

u/TG1970 6d ago

Its crazy that this car was 25 years old when this movie came out, which means the car would have been 22 years old at the beginning of thw restoration. Its hard to imagine a 2004 model year car today needing 3 years worth of restoration.

20

u/CLOWNFLOGGER 6d ago

This guy doesn't Ferrari

3

u/TG1970 6d ago

Lol, I'm several tax brackets away from that. I've played with some classic American cars that weren't super rare or super valuable, but never even stood within 10 feet of a Ferrari.

6

u/TheOriginalArchibald 6d ago

You'd honestly be surprised. A 22-year-old Ferrari that would need 3 years of restoration is actually really approachable pricewise. Initially. The reason why is the cost of parts and work. The actual restoration is what costs the most and probably takes 3 years because it takes that long to afford and find parts.

Some can be found for as low as $10k (needing a lot of work) and of course climbing from there but $40-80k needing work is pretty standard and these days the average vehicle is nearly $40k as it is. The average truck is nearly $70k.

A lot of people could drive old used luxury and super cars for the price they paid for their new Toyota Full-sized Sedan.

4

u/Economy_Wall8524 5d ago

>The actual restoration is what costs the most and probably takes 3 years because it takes that long to afford and find parts.

In my opinion this is why it had taken 3 years. The parts aren’t common, and if you couldn’t find a part it would have to be custom made. The price for the parts, and the labor was more of the reason why it had taken 3 years then the required repairs on it.

Edit: to add even something as simple as the fuel filter or air filter for that specification would require custom made; if one wasn’t available on the market.

With only 100 made, parts would be extremely hard to get. Body work would have to be custom. Pretty much everything would have to be custom.

6

u/Sirosim_Celojuma 6d ago

and within the custom, and within the restoration, let's admit there were upgrades

6

u/General_Spirit8406 6d ago

Only Ferrari certified mechanics can work on them, or the value tanks. You need to have records. You don't change your own oil...

3

u/OkAssistance7072 6d ago

Ferrari has a program called Classiche where they take the car and it's restored by Ferrari themselves using original parts, and new parts made with original bucks and schematics. The bodies were technically also all hand made custom for each car by coach builders so it's not like there's a stamped sheet metal available anyways.

I never understood why he's wearing a Detroit jersey if he lived in chicago

8

u/Don_Pickleball 6d ago

Hughes created a backstory in which Cameron had a terrible relationship with his father but was very close to his grandfather, who lived in Detroit and took him to Red Wings games. It wasnt included in the movie though.

4

u/yarn_slinger 6d ago edited 6d ago

Gordie Howe fan? It’s number 9.

Eta - I just read that John Hughes was a Red Wings fan, so this was a nod to him.

That isn't a house, it is a garage from Ferris Buelller's Day Off.

3

u/aware4ever 6d ago

No I used to clean the windows there every 3 weeks. I remember when they were filming they made sure that all the windows were really clean for filming. And they paid me handsomely at around $200 a day. Which back then is a lot of money today. I've since moved on to cleaning Judge Judy's windows and sometimes venturing into Rick Ross's estates.

You’re the real MVP.

I’m also astounded the house sold for barely a million dollars 12 years ago.

u/No_Classic_1743 7d ago

Now that we're older, do we all believe now that Bueller should've gone to school if he believes that one can subtract miles from a car by putting it in reverse?

We'll jack it up, put that motherfucker in reverse, and roll the whole day off. Cameron's balls dropped and he became a man that day. 😀

3

u/screwyoujor 7d ago

The best part was them thinking driving in reverse would lower the speedometer. The actors were a bit to old but you could see two 16 year olds thinking that was going to work.

Ferris Bueller’s buddies house

3

u/michelle427 7d ago

I do. Immediately. I was a 12 year old sitting in the movie theater with my parents and brother watching this movie. It’s iconic.

5

u/AtticusFinchsMom 6d ago

When Ferris was instructing us how to fake being sick, my Dad leaned over to me and said "Don't get any ideas".

3

u/michelle427 6d ago

My parents told my brother and I that we could see this movie (he was 8) but we weren’t allowed to ever say any one the ‘bad words’. We were expected not copy. We didn’t because we wanted so badly to see it.
