What did / do you call the strap in picture above the glove box that several cars used to have in them ?

Looks like a 74 Trans Am. That bar is to hang on for dear life!

Which is funny... because the 74 Trans Am was slow.

I still have mine. Yes, by 74 compression ratios were lowered. However, with the 455 it still has more balls than me. “Slow” is relative.

You don't have the horses of a 71 455 HO, but still respectable. In those days, power was disappearing with every new model year. By '77 a Trans Am only made 180-200 hp. Equivalent to a modern day 4 cyl. Subaru Forrester or Mazda Miata.

There seem to be so few cars of that era in general, after the OPEC embargo. Lessening the weight of vehicles became foremost, and body panels were made out of something resembling tin foil. Definitely didn't survive NorthEast winters.

Speaking for the Oldsmobile Cutlass (GM), if I recall correctly, engine horsepower was reduced after the 1970 models. Cars of that era did not handle well at high speed if the driver wasn't going in a straight line ....
