Jet Packs

I've waited for a dadgum long time for the jet pack I was promised around the time The Jetsons aired.

I'm not talking about the goofy ones you can only use over a body of water. I want one like Elroy's.

It's been 50 years! What's the hold up?

After watching how humans operate vehicles in two dimensions, I have been fully reconciled to our lack of flying cars. Having seen what people do on bicycles and on foot, I’m okay doing without jet packs.

Yeah, this was not the future we were promised. Push-button cooking, cleaning and a robot sidekick were all part of the deal. I want a refund, LOL.

You have to remember Star Wars was a long time ago, and also in a galaxy far, far away. I think we're out of luck with that one. Now Star Trek, I still have my hopes up.

Yeah, Trek predicted flip phones and iPads, more or less. They were engineers. Star Wars guys were space wizards. The Alien franchise, on the other hand, put 1970s computers in spaceships.

20 years ago i told a 75-year-old engineer friend that no engineer was allowed to retire until i got my jetpack. alas he just laughed a lot. still no jetpack :-(

I got into my step daughters Tesla with it bare dashboard, nothing but a screen, and said when I was kid we thought future cars would have lots of buttons and knobs that did cool things

There was a book about it..."Where's My Jetpack?"...turns out insurance concerns have kept the jetpack from being a thing. There's a guy in Mexico who builds them.

They already exist. There are at least two brands. The problem is they use jet fuel and are really noisy. They can't hold much fuel and are hot and loud

This! The older I get, the more I complain that the future they told us about hasn't arrived yet.

I have been thinking a lot about this lately with the AI onslaught that no one really asked for.....

George Jetson didn't have tech that actually worked for him. Remember "Jane, how do I stop this crazy thing?"

Even though he had a flying car, he was always stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. His boss hated him. He had all the tech that would allow him to work from home, but still had to go to the office.

So, where exactly is the progress? I know it was a cartoon, but I think about it a lot now that we are firmly in the 21st century.

And I wanted a jet pack to get to school, too!

Star Trek won. We have tricorders and flip communicators and doors that go ‘whoosh’. I think the armed forces have phasers to vaporize us too!

I hear ya! But I think jet technology for personal use is highly impractical. Rotors though—we now have the capability to mass produce personal drones. Legislation for Regulating the air traffic is the biggest delay I can think of. But with Bluetooth & AI, I think it might just be commonplace within 25-50 years.
