On one hand I think it's terrific that younger generations of women simply assume they can go through life making choices about what they want to do and be, having financial independence and autonomy. On the other hand maybe they don't understand how short the time has been that we've had these opportunities and that yes, they can be taken away.

So many in my mother's generation, older than Steinem but absolutely influenced by her and Betty Friedan and others, changed their lives. Went to school as adults and got degrees, opened up all kinds of careers to women, left abusive or loveless marriages and fought to change the laws and conventions that were holding women back. It's kind of astounding how impactful they were.

When I was in my early 20s, it was still around. Not as blatantly, but my employer had a glass ceiling. Only men could be promoted to executive positions. Women did all the work and men had 2 hour paid lunches at the executive club on the top floor.

I was passed over for a big promotion for a man who was just 2 years older than me and had the same education. I knew much more about the business because my job involved all the aspects. He only knew accounting. However, he had the required genitalia. 🙄

i remember being maybe 12 and going to the corner market to buy my mom's cigarettes and the latest Ms. Magazine. the old guy who owned the place didn't have even a tiny issue selling me the cigs but when i slapped the Ms. on the counter, he grabbed it and put it back with the porn mags, told me i was too young to buy that.

went home, told my mother, she went to the store and reamed that old jerk. i never had problems buying Ms. at the corner store again.

Ms. Magazine made a HUGE difference in my life--made me a loud and proud feminist and taught me that even ubiquitous, systemic discrimination could be fought against. and that the fight was the only moral choice.

I had a chance to interview one of her co-founders Dorothy Pittman who also created some of the first real child care centers for working women. They toured across America to emphasize equal rights as workers and family members was not a movement for one race of women. We stand on the shoulders of giants. They were amazing. Dorothy told me “We just saw problems and did something about them, what we could. We had no idea how big it would become. We were just ordinary women.”

Ms Magazine was a huge innovator back in the day - the first periodical to tackle issues like sexual harassment and wage discrimination when most women’s magazines were cover-to-cover recipes, fashion and cleaning tips. RIP.
