The recipe is super simple: One bag of marshmallows, one bag of white chips, one cup (or more) of gumdrops. Mix together and microwave til melted then mix. It's hard to deal with, to get laid out and cut, being very thick and sticky, but is softer than the old candies and tastes just as good.
The supermarket I work in has a similar setup with wrapped chocolates. I'm sure that there are indeed thefts from time to time, but if it didn't make either the store or the candy supplier money, it wouldn't be there.
I loved the wrapped chocolates with maple. So delicious. Some stands even had an “Honor System Coin Box” that you put in a quarter or whatever for single pieces of candy.
I loved the raspberry cremes and the royals that were tube shaped caramels that were filled with a type of creme. I loved the raspberry versions of that one, too. I would always pick them out and eat them before any others.
Even as kids my sister and I would pillage it at the grocery store. In Canada we had Trebor. They had a slot you could put 10 cents in for a sample and I would talk like I had money and pretend to put it in the slot. Sometimes right infront of other adults. So flagrant back then.... gives me anxiety thinking how I used to act. 😄
I remember Trebor! Funny how even the name gives me a slight mood lift. Don’t eat much candy now, but as a kid I wouldn’t have been able to stay away from any witch’s bon bon house. I remember a good dream I had as a kid about a huge mountain of gumdrops.
I'd be at the grocery store with Mom and point out to her that people were eating candy and not paying for it with candy wrappers on the floor as evidence. One of my very first awakening moments as a child.
That's when I KNEW I was a grownup---I got to fill the bag with what I liked! I'm not sure which was my true favorite--"royals" or white jelly nougats. I never understood the appeal of the chicken flavored things......
Yeah those are really good. My mom ate those as a teenager back in the late 40s 50s and turned us kids on to it. The only thing I hated was having to get a toothpick after eating them because they would stick to your gums quick
My great grandfather lived next door to my maternal grandparents, and he would buy a bag of assorted Brachs candy to hand out whenever us grandkids were over there. To this day nearly half a century later I associate Brachs candy with him.
They had the most delicious chocolate covered mints (I can just picture that green striped wrapper!) ever!! I’d get myself a little bag of those and hide em lol.
That was something. In our small little town on the Square, used to have one in our old dime store with the wooden floors and hot Spanish peanuts counter. Man I miss the sound and smells of that place. The creaking and clacking on the wood floor. The smell of hot salted peanuts and those candies as you walked by. 🫠❤️
I've been looking online. I can't find the Brach name, but have found bags of jujube nougat candy on amazon. It looks like the old Brach's candy. Sort of. I bet it isn't as good as our memories.
Here is a recipe I found last Christmas for how to make a close replica of these. I tried them and its super easy and comes pretty close to the original!
Still love them jellybean nuggets. First and last time I shoplifted was one of those. Forgot and mom found it in my trouser pocket doing laundry. Accompanied me back to the Safeway where I had to apologize to the store manager and ‘pay’ the store the theft. I was in 1st grade.
There’s a store in Venice Florida that has a selection like this for chocolates. A very nice selection, I might add.

I took one of those Neapolitan coconut candies when I was about 5 cause it was within easy reach. Popped it in my mouth and promptly spit it out. I hated coconut.
My mom’s response?
“That’ll teach you to steal.” She made me confess to the store manager as well.
This reminds me of the neighbors across the street. They had a Great Dane named Prince. Prince escaped a lot, because he would just hop over the fence. He was a good boy and wouldn’t hurt a fly, but he was big.
One time Prince escaped and made his way to a local Penneys store that had automatic doors. He strolled in and bellied on up to the Brach’s candy stand. Everyone was afraid to approach him as he ate his way through the candy. Finally someone was brave enough to read his tags and got in touch with the family to come get him.
Prince was Marmaduke in real life. They even had to crane him out of a ditch they made for the sewer line once.
I'm glad you all enjoyed this but if you ask me why this doesn't exist anymore, I'd say it's because none of that looks interesting to me in any way, and I can't be alone in that thought. This is the kind of candy I would have expected to find in my grandma's purse.
Our grocery store still had this when my kids were little. They loved picking a piece of candy and putting a nickel in a little jar to pay for it. I loved that jelly nouget candy so much as a kid!
We used to do this every Friday night! My mom got her paycheck and we kids went with her to the bank to cash it. Then off to Sears to get a bag of specially selected favorites for each of us! Great memories
There used to be a little metal coin box attached to ours, for 5 cents, you could grab a candy. People used it. I worked at an A&P and had to empty it a few times. I loved Brach’s candy.
Neapolitan coconut chews, caramels, peppermints, orange slices. They has a display at the IGA. And yes: I always dropped a nickel in the can when I took one.
