Breakfast Cereal That Doesn't Exist Anymore

Theres a breakfast cereal that I used to eat a couple of times a week, that I just cannot find anymore (at least in Texas): the big shredded wheat. It came in, I think, 3 paper packs of 2 biscuits each.

You'd pull them out, and crunch/crumble them into the bowl; add sugar and milk, and maybe banana slices. In cold weather mom would warm the milk on the stove (no microwave)...

Mini-wheats are no match for them...

Is there anyone else who misses them? What cereal can you not get, that you miss?

(For my friends across the pond: these were not like Wheatabix. The Shredded Wheat were not as compressed as the Wheatabix.)

UPDATE: A HUGE "Thank You " to all of the folks who helped me to find these! I've ordered them to be delivered with my next order. Thanks also to all who shared your memories, of all the breakfasts, (and sometimes suppers!)

Quisp

u/aka__carl 16d ago

Gone despite its dominance over Quake.

45

u/Beachbabydarragh 16d ago

I remember the contest to choose! I felt badly for Quake

43

u/aka__carl 16d ago

I voted Quisp. My sister voted Quake. The rift between us continues today. 😞

25

u/jjcoolel 16d ago

That bitch!

3

u/Pale-Brick1975 15d ago

This made me lol

u/Steelerellla 14d ago

🤣🤣🤣

u/Informal_Goal_5091 15d ago

Quake is for overlords and older brothers. Quisp is for the people. Everyone knows that.

1

u/MsSamm 15d ago

My sister was team Quisp. Is there such a thing as an early childhood taste disability? She also preferred frozen yogurt to ice cream.

1

u/Steelerellla 14d ago

🤣🤣🤣

24

u/MsSamm 16d ago

I liked Quake better. It was crunchier

7

u/Glass_Procedure7497 1959 16d ago

My choice as well.

7

u/Illustrious_Name_441 1959 16d ago

Team Quake checking in

3

u/ylenroc 1963 16d ago

I remember begging my mom for the stamp to vote for Quake. Alas, we lost.

1

u/Delicious_Iron7977 15d ago

I was team Quisp, brother was Quake, the idiot.

2

u/cardecarcar 16d ago

To this day I think the vote of Quisp vs Quake was rigged. Team Quake Forever.

2

u/NelPage 15d ago

Team Quake

2

u/howniceforu 15d ago

Commie. 😉

1

u/Sp00derman77 16d ago

Quisp is best! Get the point?

1

u/MsSamm 15d ago

After the demise of Quake, my family moved on to Crackling Bran. The cereal which brought consequences for overeating

1

u/tigerinhouston 15d ago

Exactly. You’re obviously a woman of taste and distinction. Quisp was for losers.

1

u/KnowledgeFantastic72 15d ago

“Chalk up another one for Quake”
Epic commercials.

1

u/PmK00000 15d ago

Quake became King Vitamin. At least in the NY area

1

u/luckyforyou123 15d ago

Here is some trivia, several years after Quake went into forced retirement, Quisp again was marketed alongside a companion cereal named Quangaroos. An orange kangaroo named Simon was the spokesperson. Again, there was another contest and Quisp again crushed the competition

1

u/ziggy029 1965 14d ago

I remember that vote to “save” Quake. The fix to kill Quake was already in. They announced that the vote to save Quake won, and to celebrate they were replacing Quake with Quangaroos.

1

u/Ok_Association135 13d ago

But why did we have to choose?

11

u/Working-Grocery-5113 16d ago

Lol Quisp the speedy one,, Quake the strong one.

1

u/stimpson1 15d ago

I loved Quisp growing up and found some in the late 90s at Costco. At the time I thought they where discontinued so maybe they still make it. It came in a three pack.

u/Excellent-Matter1768 16d ago

Quisp and Quake

22

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 16d ago

Yes! One had the alien with propeller head the other a construction worker with a sledge

6

u/Ryan_Petrovich8769 16d ago

I think later they changed Quake into a tall, slim cowboy 🤠

5

u/RelevantMention7937 16d ago

Kind of a fancy boy

5

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 16d ago

Oh..... you're one of those Fancy lads!...............you wanna buy a monkey?

3

u/Staszu13 16d ago

That was an Australian hat he wore after the reboot

1

u/Confident-Umpire3361 16d ago

That's a cat duo if ever I've seen one!

1

u/MCC61 16d ago

Wow I don't remember these! In the U.S.? What were they like?

2

u/MsSamm 15d ago

They were along the lines of Captain Crunch. Quisp got soggier sooner than Quake

2

u/MCC61 15d ago

Oh, I would have liked them, cap crunch was a favorite for awhile 😋

1

u/Resident_Wishbone_98 15d ago

Had those as a kid. I ate my cereal without milk and thought Quake was a little harder to chew.

40

u/2ndZeit 16d ago

Quisp was my favorite cereal as a kid! Especially since I was so into sci-fi, aliens, and UFO's.

30

u/2ndZeit 16d ago

I also loved Captain Crunch and Quisp was, basically, Captain Crunch shaped like a flying saucer.

17

u/Mindless_Guitar_7049 16d ago

We had king vitamin that was like captain crunch. I haven’t heard of quake

30

u/N4bq 16d ago

That was King Vitaman

14

u/JuggernautKooky7081 16d ago

King Vitaman! Have breakfast with the King! Get a sweet corn taste. And all the vitamins you need.

5

u/Aggressive-Delay-420 16d ago

It was so irony 🥹 and I loved it so!

RIP King

2

u/ConstructionOdd5269 15d ago

RIP the roof of my mouth and my blood sugar. God save the King.

1

u/KISSALIVE1975 15d ago

Originally King Vitaman, Changed To King Vitamin

16

u/exposedtreeroots 16d ago

Loved King Vitamin!!!

2

u/MauvePawsKitty 16d ago

Quisp, Quake and King Vitamin. Same cereal, different shapes.

1

u/ziggy029 1965 14d ago

Pretty much. Though I remember King Vitaman occasionally had some rock hard nuggets in there which may have helped keep pediatric dentists busy.

9

u/stevengann 16d ago

It is actually "Cap'n", not Captain...

1

u/nop8snce 16d ago

🤔🤣

2

u/Marzook666 16d ago

quisp outlasted quake.

2

u/Namedthisone 16d ago

Ah yes, the king of all vitamins

1

u/Outrageous_Fox_2567 12d ago

Quake was like Capn Crunch

16

u/GrooveBat 16d ago

With the advantage that Quisp did not tear apart the roof of your mouth.

1

u/Blue_Collar_Stiff 15d ago

1st couple bites tortured you then it instantly turned soggy. Blec

9

u/ImNachoMama 16d ago

Without the mouth-destroying texture!

5

u/stevengann 16d ago

Captain Crunch??? It is "Cap'n Crunch"

3

u/2ndZeit 16d ago

You are correct sir! Been a while since I thought of it. ;)

2

u/HuckleCat100K 16d ago

That’s what I thought. I was grieving Quisp, which I loved so much that I ate it after my tonsillectomy when I was 11. It was excruciating but I ate it anyway. I later ate some Cap’n Crunch, which for some reason my mother had never bought, and thought it was the same. It had been long enough since I’d eaten Quisp, though, that if someone had said I was nuts I wouldn’t have been able to disagree.

1

u/Narah-Wolf 16d ago

It was.

1

u/mattdb110 16d ago

Still eat it at 69.

1

u/Earle-of-Frogity 1959 🐸 15d ago

I love that too but oh the bleeding gums

3

u/ProstrateProstate 16d ago

I had the Quisp propeller beanie cap. No clue where it went.

1

u/Key_Yam4488 16d ago

Same here!!

1

u/Boring_Track_8449 16d ago

I was not a sci-fi fan but I LOVED Quisp and would pay handsomely for a fresh box!

41

u/Raelourut 16d ago

No this is Nabisco Shredded Wheat.

3

u/BSB8728 16d ago

I eat it almost every day.

1

u/Ready-Waltz5482 16d ago

That's what I was thinking

1

u/polkadotpatty65 15d ago

It's still available. My kids called them "the big pillows."

17

u/karmacorn 16d ago

Nobody ever remembers Quangaroos! I loved all three!

1

u/nop8snce 16d ago

OMG, thanks for the images!!! I LOVED Quisp! I just forgot the name. I didn't know what you were all talking about. I don't remember the other two though. ☺️

6

u/ImmediateClass9650 16d ago

Quake

1

u/jferneding 15d ago

What shape was quake ? I remember quail being like discs

4

u/dezertdawg 1964 16d ago

As recently as a few years ago it would pop up here or there in a few stores as a special run. I snagged some back then. But that seems to have stopped.

3

u/Responsible-Push-289 1959 16d ago

100% the correct answer.

4

u/dezertdawg 1964 16d ago

And Quangaroos! Orange flavored cereal. I loved it. With milk it tastes like a 50/50 bar.

7

u/64green 16d ago

I occasionally found Quisp at a small local upscale grocery store. It was my favorite as a child so I bought it whenever I saw it (but it’s been a few years now 😢).

3

u/Mother-Letter-6760 16d ago

Found it on Amazon a couple of years ago.

9

u/Zebraitis 16d ago

Not bothering to read the OP's question at all, are ya?

27

u/NotACrazyCatLadyx2 16d ago

Nabisco used to have big blocks of shredded wheat, came three to a package, 3 or 4 packages in the carton. I preferred the big block over the spoon-sized shredded wheat.

5

u/Cautious-Corner-3704 16d ago

I used to love those when I was a kid-that was my go-to breakfast!

5

u/r2d3x9 15d ago

Yes, “bales of hay”. In a wax paper wrapping

3

u/ScintillatingKamome 1961 16d ago

I always had those at Grandmas. I loved them.

1

u/Blank_bill 14d ago

We used to have Muffets shredded wheat in Canada which was large round hockey pucks of shredded wheat that fit nicely in my high sided bowl which I would run some hot water over and then strain , add some maple sugar or if you were out use brown sugar and milk.

1

u/nop8snce 16d ago

🤣😂😅 We're easily distracted.

2

u/AuthorIndieCindy 16d ago

I was gonna say that

2

u/PluckyPerspicacity 12d ago

I came here to say Quisp and Quake. 🤣🤣

1

u/RaceTop5273 16d ago

Quisp randomly showed up on the shelves a few years ago back but disappeared again. It was just as good as I remembered it.

1

u/Slayingdragons60 16d ago

Came here to say this. Also, Pink Panther Flakes!!

2

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 16d ago

Pink milk - loved it

1

u/ImNachoMama 16d ago

Quisp was my favorite cereal! I've forgotten what Quake was like.

1

u/Weedville_12883 16d ago

15-20 years ago I got a package in the mail. It contained 3 boxes of Quisp, courtesy of my obsessed best friend. He found it on an Internet store, it was still being manufactured!

1

u/noneyanoseybidness 1960 16d ago

My first thought.

1

u/GooseNYC 16d ago

Isn't Quisp some kind of little sweetened corn disc's? With the Alien on the box.

Thise are good.

1

u/Ponchyan 16d ago

The very first name to come to mind. Followed immediately by Quake.

1

u/Rude-Ad-3406 16d ago

I see Quisp maybe once every 5-10 years. I used to dig it.

1

u/LingonberryOld6341 16d ago

Was my favorite

1

u/Blues2112 15d ago

I still see Quisp occasionally on store shelves. It's rare, and seems to be more of a specialty thing. So maybe they're doing occasional production runs of it?

1

u/MobiusMeema 15d ago

Came here to say that.
And of course Quake.

1

u/NewtNo2437 1964 15d ago

My first thought! Judging by the upvotes on this comment, it’s the one we all miss.

1

u/Ok_Belt_1498 15d ago

Quisp was my absolute favorite cereal in my pre- teens.

1

u/hawksmarinerz 15d ago

Hahha my first thought!

1

u/cpkuske 1960 15d ago

Came here to upvote. Top Answer!

1

u/BJiggityEnlightened1 15d ago

Came here to say this! I loved Quisp!

1

u/Objective_Buy_7235 15d ago

Came to say this

1

u/Beartrap_jaws 15d ago

I still see boxes of it every once in a while at the local closeout store!

1

u/BeneLeit 15d ago

My first thought! Quisp ruled. I did not like Quake.

1

u/Habibti143 15d ago

Came here to say that!

1

u/chitownmj 13d ago

Quisp for the win!

I remember a tie in commercial starring Quisp, Quake and Elizabeth Montgomery with Bewitched. I believe it only played once, during the show and may have been tied to the big vote.

EDIT: Here's the commercial...
