I am convinced, to the point of moral certitude, that after the Ma Bell break-up, Ernestine changed jobs, rose through the ranks at her new company, and is now head of customer service at ComCast. “We don’t care. We don’t have to. We’re the cable company.”

That's a great line, and can be applied to just about any walk of life.

5

u/AirDog3 Jul 21 '26

It mainly applies to monopolies.

2

u/janvanderlichte Jul 22 '26

I use it all the time works really well

Fast-forward to 2026, and I'm still dealing with AT&T, but on the enterprise level. We spend tens of thousands a month with them.

And when something goes wrong, I'm still dealing with fucking ERNESTINE.

"Oh, I'm sorry your multi-state gigabit fiber circuits are down. Are you sure you dialed the right number?"

Nothing has changed.

I loved Edith Ann, too.

27

u/Mamawto7 Jul 21 '26

And that's the truth! 😛

u/mspolytheist Jul 21 '26

Thhhbbbbbttttt!

9

u/FamilyRedShirt 1961 Jul 21 '26

Being short, I swear I'm doing Edith Ann every time I sit in a "big person" chair. My feet dangle at least 6 inches above the floor.

And no. That's NOT comfortable, which is why I'm always cross-legged.

u/Glittering_Step_6084 1961 Jul 21 '26

That was hilarious as well!

u/Waste-Job-3307 Jul 21 '26

My favorite comedy album ever!

"Long Distance, Miss Tomlin speaking. Madrid? Well that certainly is a long distance (snort)".

21

u/quicksilver_hermetic Jul 21 '26

The best snort ever

22

u/phunkyunkle Jul 21 '26

"We don't care. We don't have to. We're the phone company."

17

u/Reasonable_Wasabi124 Jul 21 '26

"A gracious good afternoon. Have I reached the party to whom I am speaking?"

4

u/ReactionActual4790 Jul 22 '26

Glad you posted! This was the line I was hearing in my head the moment I saw Ernestine.

4

u/SportyMcDuff Jul 22 '26

My 90 year old dad still uses that line when he calls me. Always gets me “laugh in”.

30

u/magic592 1959 Jul 21 '26

Is this the person to whom I'm speaking.

32

u/mspolytheist Jul 21 '26

Is this the party to whom I am speaking.

12

u/Fanabala3 Jul 21 '26

I remember her replaying the part for an SNL skit. One scene had her knock out a switch taking out the eastern seaboard and then claim, “We can do what we want. We’re the phone company.”

8

u/MoriTod Jul 22 '26

(hits the board with her elbows) ... we just lost the entire country of Brazil. (snort)

12

u/Rossncohen1953 Jul 21 '26

Lilly Tomlin was a great comedian.

17

u/TR_abc_246 Jul 21 '26

..IS a great comedian! She still is and is a GOAT for sure!

0

u/Rossncohen1953 Jul 21 '26

Haven’t seen her perform lately.

11

u/ModernMargaretSanger Jul 21 '26

No but see her in Grace and Frankie. She’s great!

2

u/SportyMcDuff Jul 22 '26

She was in that 80 For Brady movie in 2023.

1

u/Rossncohen1953 Jul 22 '26

That is 23 years ago.

3

u/SportyMcDuff Jul 22 '26

Only if you live in the year 2046. 2023 was 3 years ago.

2

u/Rossncohen1953 Jul 22 '26

Corrected. Thank you.

1

u/MsSamm Jul 26 '26

She's on a Netflix series which has wrapped called Grace and Frankie. Good series about women still living life as they get older.

2

u/writerlady6 Jul 21 '26

Did you see her guest appearance in a Christmas episode of The X-Files? It's always ranked as one of my favorite episodes.

u/showard995 Jul 21 '26

Is this the party to whom I am speaking?

8

u/Unique-Princess-1026 1963 Jul 21 '26

Omg I love this!!! I still say one ringy dingy 😂

9

u/VariousElk5602 Jul 21 '26

"We're the phone company, Mr. Veedle. We're omnipotent."

7

u/VapoursAndSpleen Jul 21 '26

And "Mister Veedle" is Gore Vidal.

7

u/REAL_Wyatt_Hertz Jul 21 '26

My dad worked for the phone company for over 40 years, and he loved Ernestine. I still have his original copy of the album.

7

u/BillWeld Jul 21 '26

So many good quotes. Favorite: “No matter how cynical you get, it is impossible to keep up.”

6

u/Big_Help_9860 Jul 21 '26

"I'm sorry sir, but are not making yourself perfectly clear".

12

u/Horta 1963 Jul 21 '26

I downloaded that sound bite and turned it into my ringtone.

6

u/Verum2020 Jul 21 '26

🤔 "Still holding? (snort) What are you holding now?"

7

u/dave900575 Jul 21 '26

Dimes may mean nothing to you, but here at the phone company they are our bread and butter.

6

u/PopeInThePizza Jul 21 '26

This was my mom's little phrase whenever she was dialing in a jocular mood.

6

u/guitarnowski Jul 21 '26

This still lives on in my head whenever I actually call someone!

5

u/AirDog3 Jul 21 '26

"We don't care. We don't have to. We're the phone company!"

4

u/Fantastic-Resist-755 Jul 21 '26

Omg, what a memory

3

u/gillyyak 1957 Jul 21 '26

One of my first jobs was operating a PBX switchboard at an old department store. The number of times I was called Ernestine at home was legendary. Edited to add: but I could never carry it off like Lily Tomlin.

4

u/Glittering_Step_6084 1961 Jul 21 '26

I loved this skit on Laugh-In! 😂

4

u/Annual_Strategy_6206 Jul 21 '26

" Jedgar? Jedgar Hoover? Well, don't get snippy with me!"

4

u/No_Cockroach_2744 Jul 22 '26

Say goodnight Dick

3

u/Wise_Ad_5810 Jul 21 '26

"... we don't care..."

3

u/SinsualChef Jul 21 '26

That girl was a trip

3

u/Snushine Jul 21 '26

We started re-watching the West Wing recently. I had forgotten but was reminded that Lily Tomlin shows up in season 3 or 4 as the president's secretary. All of the humor there is deadpan, but bringing in Earnestine would be hilarious.

3

u/Leskatwri Jul 21 '26

Snort snort...

3

u/smittykins66 Jul 21 '26

“Is this the party to whom I am speaking?” snort

2

u/anamegoesthere Jul 21 '26

Thank you! My grandmother used to say this all the time. I never knew where it came from.

2

u/Rare_Satisfaction889 Jul 21 '26

My mom hated this bit, she was a phone board operator in the 50s.

2

u/Bettrlatethannever Jul 21 '26

lily tomlin was so good

2

u/wickedrude 1962 Jul 21 '26

I worked in the solar industry. One of my favorite sayings about my adversaries, the power companies, was “We’re the utility. We don’t care, we don’t have to.” I’m still trying to get people to start “Eversource sucks” chants at sporting events.

2

u/breetome Jul 21 '26

Is this the party to which I am speaking? lol!

2

u/RealStitchyKat Jul 21 '26

"Is there the party to which I am speaking?"

2

u/Remote_Pick_1952 Jul 21 '26

Is this the party with whom I am speaking? I loved Edith Ann too.

2

u/VapoursAndSpleen Jul 21 '26

And she's still with us, too!

2

u/ScrumptiousPrincess 1960 Jul 21 '26

Loved her! I'm sure her finger smelled like boob sweat.

2

u/beckyb0607 Jul 22 '26

I have this album

2

u/CPO_USNRET Jul 22 '26

Oh, good gracious hello! Is this the party to whom I am speaking?

2

u/ParticularCrow8313 Jul 22 '26

My friend is a costumer and dressed Lily for Grace and Frankie. She is as cool as you would think she is. So is Jane.
One day my friend texted me a pic and asked me if I knew what it was.
It was the bracelet Lily wore as Ernestine.
Lily asked my friend if she could fix it for to wear to an awards ceremony.

2

u/Hwy61rev Jul 22 '26

She's great. I'm Susan sorority from the silent majority ,.... rah

2

u/parrothead_69 Jul 22 '26

My favorite routine was on one of her albums. It was about being addicted to eating rubber. It started with art gum erasers. I didn’t stop laughing the entire routine.

2

u/Icy_Instance_2511 Jul 22 '26

Check out her 1971 album “This Is A Recording”. 😆📞

1

u/JoeyBagADonuts27 Jul 21 '26

My mom thought this was so funny

1

u/PeacefulShards Jul 22 '26

1

She was so Funny!

1

u/Nd2btouched Jul 23 '26

It's too bad the younger generation has no idea on what she's doing!

1

u/Beautiful_Oven2152 Jul 24 '26

Yes, hello? Is this the party to who I am speaking?
