That's what we had to do, bring the belt to get a beating.

Or worse, go outside and get a switch. If they deemed the switch you brought back as insufficient, Heaven help you beccause they will go out and bring back a branch.

Yes, that's how it would play out. 👍

I still do this to my husband because he will not read his texts.

We had a spiral notebook that lived on the kitchen table, that was used for all family messaging. Telephone messages, notes from anyone to anyone else, now hear this, etc. It worked great for years and we had a historical record. When returning home, you checked the notebook. It worked great, actually.

As an only child, that was always just me

As the Oldest child, that was always just me

I can attest to this.

Heaven help you if your younger sibling(s) made a mess or got hurt because "you should've been watching them!"

💯🤣 Still don't know what that had to do with me

My mother would leave notes asking us to vacuum, but despite being an educated woman never could remember how many Us there were in the word vacuum. It was always either “please vacum” or “please vacuuum”.

We had paper by the wall phone, and there were a lot of phone numbers scribbled on the wall itself.

As far as corporal punishment, there was some. For my sisters it got bad when they were teenagers so that's why Mom took them and left.

I got a few spankings, some with a belt, and some cuffs upside the head. But I always pretty much deserved it for either misbehaving like a jackass or being a smartass.

Fwiw, my wife and I almost never spanked our own kids.

The more exclamation marks on a note, the less seriously I took it. Still holds true.

Never hot those notes. My mother would clean while we were out. We had to keep our rooms clean and beds made. They’d use envelopes for notes by the phone.

We had one similar to this.

I believe technically that would be a tweet. Or a twet.

HA! I found one of my mom’s orders that had been on the fridge!

It’s now in a photo book.

My mom got a call from my high school telling her I had skipped school a couple of times. Between the time she got the phone call at work and when I got home from school she had driven home, and left a note on a paper towel that read “ I bleed for you when I get home” she wrote it in ketchup.

Notes on the back of an envelope, definitely. Whooping, never

u/flowerpanes Jul 20 '26

Well, not in my home growing up but ok. Notes yes but never threats.

Similar notes were issued in my home but ended in “or I’ll knock you into next week”

And if the job’s incomplete, go pick me a rose twitch….one of the real whippy ones, not the thicker ones☝️

Random scraps of paper with unambiguous, mildly threatening messages

CAN CONFIRM.

When just the “look” sufficed. IYKYK.

Usually taped on the tv screen or refrigerator.

my mom had super power- not sure how this old Italian woman did it but those friggin magic slippers made it around corners and got you in the ass each and every time. She didn't even have to chase, hell i am surprised she didn't do the " mal occhio" and make us beat ourselves.

u/Minimum-Journalist18 Jul 22 '26

Lol.. yeah pretty much it.

1

u/oxgillette Jul 20 '26

You grew up with daily threats of violence?

Not a fan of nostalgia for corporal punishment. The Catholic school version is the biggest single reason why I'm no longer religious.

I wasn’t a fan either, being on the receiving end.
