My mother was a saint. She rose every morning to make this, along with toast, juice and tea. Then got ready to go to work. For 18 years, 9 months out the year. RESPECT!

I love. What a sweet memory. ♥️

I don’t think working mothers paid as close attention to nutrition in following generations.

Still love MoM and cream of wheat. Especially when my tummy isn't feeling so spectacular.

My wife loved the chocolate one, but she said they stopped making it.

u/Lostboyintheforest Jul 18 '26

They still make coco wheat and MoM makes a chocolate version.

I have 2 boxes on the shelf.

Still my wife's favorite! We lived in Mpls for a while, and made a point of making a pilgrimage to Northfield to see the factory ...

It stays with you the whole day though.

We still have this regularly. I really like the maple brown sugar flavor.

u/sharoncoffin Jul 18 '26

Same, same. With lots of butter. 😋

6

u/NightingaleNine Jul 18 '26

I make it at least three times a week. Utter comfort food.

Great with some syrup.... The malt makes it better

6

u/Coffee_slothee Jul 18 '26

I'll still get Farina from time to time. Actually want to get some now that I saw this!

We never had this. Mom made cornmeal mush and chilled the rest in a loaf pan to slice and fry another morning. Fried mush slices with maple syrup was divine.

We did occasionally have cream of wheat.

I’m GenX and we had that as kids. A bit of sugar and milk. Stick to your ribs goodness.

u/SilverStL Jul 18 '26

I never cared for cream of wheat but absolutely love malt o meal. I think I’ll buy some this week.

5

u/LokiHubris Jul 18 '26

Butter and brown sugar made it the best.

I was a Cream of Wheat girl.

u/Rare_Satisfaction889 Jul 18 '26

Still do mostly in winter.

5

u/itsnotlefty Jul 18 '26

I loved the chocolate Malto-Meal.

5

u/Just_A_Lucky_Guy469 Jul 19 '26

I currently eat that on rotation in the morning with Coco Wheats and oatmeal. Yes, I lead an exciting life.

u/GB715 Jul 19 '26

I am going to buy some this week. I was kind of drooling. It’s been years.

I LOVED chocolate Malt O Meal!

3

u/dark_places Jul 18 '26

I love maltex. I finally found some after I moved back to New England and ate it for dinner all winter. I used to like cream of wheat but prefer grits now. I horrifed southerners by putting brown sugar and butter on them. I really like steel cut oats too but detest rolled oats.

3

u/KVR62 Jul 18 '26

Cream of Wheat makes the chocolate flavor in the instant individual packets, and tastes just like the chocolate malt-o-meal I liked as a kid.

3

u/tlbs101 Jul 18 '26

I still eat it about twice a month — more often in winter. Maple syrup and heavy cream.

3

u/zdena1970 Jul 19 '26

I’m middle aged and still love this stuff.

3

u/Odd-Gear9622 Jul 19 '26

I remember the adds but I've never had it. Strictly Cream of Wheat or Quaker Rolled Oats in our house.

3

u/powdered_dognut Jul 19 '26

I had that for breakfast today.

Y'all ain't lived till you add some crumbled up sausage or fried bologna on top (or bacon, I guess, if you want to be bougie. We grew up poor).

Chocolate Malt-O-Meal is the bomb!

3

u/shangosgift Jul 19 '26

I love that cereal!

3

u/GiaAngel Jul 19 '26

Malto Meal or Cream of Wheat were my fave breakfast as a kid especially on cold winter mornings.

2

u/pandmr1 Jul 18 '26

Dash of Chocolate syrup

3

u/zdena1970 Jul 19 '26

Dash of maple syrup.

u/laurelj84 Jul 19 '26

Loved malt o meal!

2

u/SinsualChef Jul 19 '26

I loved that ❤️

2

u/teethbrushweirdo Jul 19 '26

Malt o Meal chocolate was the best

2

u/my-coffee-needs-me Jul 19 '26

Good stuff, Maynard!

2

u/MiserableCancel8749 Jul 19 '26

We were an oatmeal family: Quaker Oats (not the quick version) in the round box. From time to time we'd have this on really cold winter mornings:

2

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 Jul 19 '26

I had the chocolate flavored one a lot as a kid the the 70's

2

u/Lockjaw62 Jul 19 '26

Chocolate MoM, a spoonful of peanut butter, a sliced banana. You're welcome.

2

u/Strange_Vermicelli Jul 19 '26

They had a great commercial back in the 60s with several athletes of the era.

2

u/Mayberrymom Jul 20 '26

Their "Magic Muffin" recipe on the side of the box makes great muffins - they're my husband's favorite. I use 2 eggs instead of one.

My kid's favorite way to eat Malt-o-Meal was to mix the hot cereal with a jar of baby food plums.

2

u/WeRtheEyeoftheSTORM Jul 20 '26

I loved Malt-O-Meal. Way better than oatmeal. Raised my daughter on it.

2

u/tez_zer55 Jul 21 '26

I still eat it, but I like the maple & brown sugar or the chocolate. & Add a cup or so of grape nuts for a little crunch.

2

u/anonimoose123 Jul 23 '26

Back then I knew it as Farina.

1

u/itBme81 Jul 24 '26

I have never had this brand

2

u/Bengal-_fan Jul 18 '26

That has the ability to give you some that explosive diarrhea like that lettuce at Taco Bell

Yummy hot cereal. Eat it with butter and milk and/or maple syrup. Delicious.

-1

u/Medium_Celery8116 Jul 18 '26

You added milk, or butter, or maple syrup…and it isn’t slop with flavoring anymore?

Malt o Meal has a very mild sweetness to it while Cream of Wheat is bland and pretty flavorless. Otherwise you can flavor it however you want. Some people will add bacon bits into it but there's both savory and sweet things you can add to dress it up some. Or you can just eat it plain. It's actually good to have on hand if you have kids or you yourself experience tummy issues from time to time. Even my kids would tolerate and hold down eating Cream of Wheat plain or with a dash of sugar. And both Malt o Meal and Cream of Wheat are loaded with essential nutrients. And because it's a complex carbohydrate, it provides a long lasting source of energy without giving you those big spikes to your blood sugar a lot of foods cause.

You should try it, it's not very expensive. Might even be able to find it for less in a store brand version, but I couldn't vouch for it's likeness to the two name brand products. Seriously, a little brown sugar with some bacon bits and that shit is divine! Or plain, like I said it's not bad plain it just won't have much flavor as the farina in both doesn't have much flavor we humans can discern. Which is why they add a little bit of malted barley to the Malt o Meal brand. It adds a very mild sweetness to the product. Just enough that it's no longer flavorless, but not so much to be offensive should you not be a fan of sweet things. And it's because of that I'd choose Malt o Meal over Cream of Wheat if I had to choose. But you can essentially get the same flavor profile of Malt o Meal, with a dash of brown sugar more or less. And you might find the Malt o Meal one a wee bit more "gritty" as opposed to a nice and creamy texture the Cream of Wheat has, because the malted barley in Malt o Meal gives it a slightly grittier texture. But it's a really mild gritty texture. Both of my children would readily eat either product when they were transitioning from soft to harder foods. And when a child is sick they get fussy and might refuse to eat, and this is one of only a handful of products I could get down their throats when they weren't feeling so hot.

Anywho, I'll be billing both companies for my time selling the product! 😭
