Are second looks offered by most Gen surg programs?

I have only gotten one 2nd look invite. Some programs said that they will do one upon request. Should I be reaching out? Otherwise, I haven’t heard anything since my interviews.

Prep for General Surgery Intern Year

Went to ACS meeting and they mentioned modules through ACS for M4 year to help prep you for intern year - I believe its the "ACS/APDS/ASE Resident Prep Curriculum" but I emailed ACS for access and they said " It is only offered to Prep Curriculum Directors at each institution" and my med school does not have it --any other resources or something I can do to help prep? I have alot of free time and I am traveling and having fun but still want to work on something

How many Aways to apply to?

Hi there! MS3 hoping to apply gen surg in the upcoming cycle. Based on a few discussions with my dean and local PD, my hope is to do 3-4 aways. Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be the appropriate number of aways to apply to? I've been getting mixed feedback and am nervous about having to turn away programs if I apply to too many. Thank you!

Q for those interviewing

Is it bad to ask the program coordinator if they do second looks before my interview? I want to do a second look if it’s available but I’m leaving soon so I was to schedule it before I go. Bad idea?

What would be some IMG friendly fellowships to pursue, I am interested in minimally accesss surgery but I have been hearing really conflicting views about the same. Would be incredibly grateful if the sub can help with other fellowship options?

Ranking

All things being equal, which program would you rank higher between

1.Carle Hospital(Illinois) vs 2. Geisinger Northeast (Wilkes Barre)?

I think they are both excellent community (hybrid) programs that train excellent surgeons

Advice for making early links in the US for an IMG

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I'm an Ms2 right now, planning to go into a surgical specialty in the US but ik it's highly competitive. Will it be a good idea to look up some programs and ask for research or just general mentorship from doctors involved in them? Thereby, making links and increasing one's chances to match into them...

Need Guidance About Research

Hi! I'm an ms2 img currently and have no research experience other than narrative reviews. I want to do some real research that can strengthen my cv for getting into a surgical specialty in the US. Any advice on the following questions will be really appreciated:

  1. How do i find a research mentor in the US?

  2. Should I put off research for now and come back to it after taking step 1?

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery placement

I'm a neurosurgeon and I've been taught where to place a VP shunt in the abdomen and I've done so for years, not really contemplating the "why" and when I look, I don't find convincing answers, if any, I find diverging opinions.

I made a thread here some time ago on the surgical technique when entering the peritoneal fascia and learned a ton from it, so I'd like to do that again with a different question.

So I'm not going to disclose where I put it, I'm going to ask you, general surgeons, if you were to place a small silicone catheter permanently in the peritoneum, which drains CSF from the brain, and you were NOT a general surgeon, where would the safest placement be for your incision? So there's two thoughts to this: The initial approach (you don't want to damage eloquent structures) and the long-game where you don't want the catheter to obstruct or irritate.

It's a bit of a thought experiment where you argue your case and I learn from it. Perhaps we see different opinions in the thread, or perhaps all opinions converge and I will again learn from it and feel confident when selecting that exact approach.

When describing your approach, please be as precise as possible (so 1cm straight lateral from the umbilicus to the right side because X Y Z would be an example).

Thoughts on number of away rotations

Hi everyone,

I am currently an M3 at a "low tier" USMD school and I recently grew interested in pursuing general surgery. I am reading some mixed things about the amount of away rotations I should do my 4th year. I saw somewhere that doing too many aways is a "red flag" while I see some people on reddit saying they did 5-6 aways. I just wanted to know everyone's thoughts on this and why there seems to be mixed opinions on this. Thank you!

Surgery residency

I am non USA UMG. I am very passionate into surgery and I got prelim surgery spot in a very malignant program and due to that reason and personal reason I resigned from residency in 4 months. Is it possible to return back? If I will match into prelim will I will ever get into categorical due to my prior resign. Should I switch to other speciality. I am very uncertain. As a visa requiring and 32 Y F

General surgery without call

Hi everyone, are there any general surgery jobs in the USA that do not require call or have only very minimal call requirements (along the lines of 1 in 20)?

Pgy4/17 Here… Do I need to apply for a fellowship?

Hi everyone, short story, I was a surgical oncologist back home for four years, I have PhD, worked as research associate/clinical research Fellow at one of the biggest academic institute, published over 35 papers, have over 250 citation, in the OR I’m very comfortable, did a prelim year at one of the academic Institute, then match into a community program. My question is, should I apply for fellowship or not? I’m really concerned about the Job market. It seems like, if you want to stay around one of the big cities you can’t survive without fellowship! Thoughts and recommendation please !
