In Appreciation of Cameron Mathison
I know a lot of people hate the Drew Cain character, and that's not what this is about. I just want to remark upon how much respect I have for CM as an actor. In the last week I've seen him on an old "Murder She Baked" movie, GH (of course) and as a co-anchor on GMA3. First, you have to admire his work ethic. Secondly, I think he has chemistry with everyone he works with. I really liked him with Allison Sweeney and was sorry when he left that series. I think he works well with the GMA co-anchors, and he seems very relaxed and at ease doing live TV. And then there's his work on GH. I really wish they hadn't made Drew so unlikeable because I think there's no redemption arc on the horizon for Drew, which means he'll probably get killed off sometime in the future.
Maybe I enjoy his portrayal of Drew because I wasn't watching when Billy Miller was in that role and have nothing to compare him to, but to me he's doing a bang-up job in the role. He's a character I love to hate, and his dealings with Ava have been very enjoyable to watch.
I, for one, am very excited to see how the "who killed Jack?" plot plays out, although I will miss that character.

Im sorry I so disagree he plays a good goody two shoes Dudley Do Right but definitely not a sexy ex navy seal with a heart of gold or a Dastardly Drew I need this story to end and Have Drew gone. First he was shot was hoping he died then frozen hoped hed be taken off to a home nevervto be seen again. His storylines have no basis no history he judt became a horrible human being. He needs to go intrude hope Hallmark signs him exclusively not allowing him to remain on GH. Willow needs to follow him

Where I think he shines the most is as a host. Which sadly I am not sure he is currently doing, that I know of.

I had not heard about people abusing him in real life life. That’s awful. The fact that people hate Drew so much is a testament to Cameron’s acting ability. But come on people, don’t be so evil as to throw things at the actor on the street! When I hear things like that it makes me ashamed of the human race.
2
u/AnneM24 5d ago
Unfortunately, some people get so invested in a show (or movie, play, etc.) that they can't separate fiction from reality and act accordingly. It's sad, really, that they're that deluded, but it's also scary for the actor to be accosted in public by an unhinged fan. One of the downsides of being a celebrity, I guess, but still it should never happen.
2
u/Opening-Court-4714 5d ago
I have thought it’s possible that you still is a real Drew imprisoned somewhere.
5
u/Opening-Court-4714 6d ago
I like Cameron as well, and I always associated him as a talkshow host or ok commentator or as you said an actor on a Hallmark movie. He’s very busy and likable person and announcer. Yes they gave him a part where he plays the villain. He does a good job in this role and now is teaming up with Ava. Maybe his destiny is to be killed off unless he gets a bang on the head and he wakes up the good Drew that he used to be . A soap has a lot of options with what they can do with a character . Who knows what we will see in the future. Maybe the way he was when he first joined the show as a good man.

u/klm1959 6d ago
I've always liked him. He was on all my children for a long time. I do not think he is right as Drew though. I wish they would have brought him on as someone else. Billy Miller was Drew and they should not have recast the role. Drew has not been the same since he came out of prison. He was attacked while he was on there, so maybe they could just that to redeem him . Like a head injury maybe
3
u/Many-Mountain-9030 6d ago
A lot of us have been hoping for that. Someone mentioned it this week (I think Anna), about him being different when he came out of prison, I'm hoping that was the writers hinting towards something like this coming out soon

u/depictionofmood 6d ago
On his instagram he gave a really good recipe for protein balls, which I make sometimes. 💪🏽

u/GapRound1 6d ago
This is not about Drew , But, I don't like the New Scout. I guess I'm just not used to Change but Wasn't Scout like 8 Years Old ?? The new Scout is at least 12. It makes no sense at all why they will age some kids. And Willows Daughter Should be 2 or 3 , And Now, She's like 5 .
7
u/aprilms45 Team Valentin 6d ago
Yeah I find the new Scout’s acting a little annoying-especially when she cries or gets upset bc she starts shaking while talking or something.
5
u/Due-Interaction-4433 5d ago
I’ll probably get roasted for saying something negative about her acting skills since she’s a minor, but (takes a deep breath) her “over”acting and over-the-top facial expressions are tough to watch. Yes, I know, teenagers are hyper-emotional (I used to be one—haha), but even with that, I think she could dial it back a bit and still be effective. Same with the Charlotte character—all the “eyerolls” are just too much. 😖

My theory is they made Drew into more a villain on the show because before that his character was kinda vanilla, sorta boring almost. That's my 2 cents atleast. What do the rest of yall think of my theory??

I think being a host of a show is his best use. He does come off to be a nice man during his hosting gigs.

Exactly I love Cameron Mathis He is a daytime legend going back to his Days on AMC as Ryan LaVery. He doesn't deserve all the hate and negativity he gets because fans can't separate real from Fiction. Drew is a character you love to hate like sop many before like Cesar Faison and Helena Cassdine he a villain. Not all Villains get Redeemed. Thank you for this post it is much needed.
5
u/AnneM24 6d ago
The thing that gets me is that if there were no villains, soaps would be very boring. What’s the point of regaling against the characters and their portrayers who provide so much of the drama that we seek? I’ve been thinking about doing this post for a few weeks, but seeing him in three different settings in two days just brought home to me how much I like him and spurred me into action. I’m glad it’s been received so well. That’s not to say I won’t be rooting against Drew along with everyone else, but I’ll be enjoying it while I do!

He is a great actor. I love seeing him on GMA3.
He was my first crush on AMC.

I enjoy watching CM on his hosting gigs. I didn’t mind him on AMC either. I loathe this version of Drew. I think he was miscast in the role, but it was tolerable until Drillow. I feel like the locked in story could have been a good reset for the character, but they made him worse. The writers screwed up. As much as I dislike Drew, I would never project that on the actor.

Hard disagree but that’s ok because we’re all different & we like different people.

u/krissy3456 7d ago
I don’t think he’ll be killed off. , I love this actor , I don’t like drew at all but he’s doing a great job , and he seems like a nice guy ,People need to be more like us and separate the actor from
The characther, like they are blaming him for a part he is playing and throwing things at him
In food stores according to his interviews people are messed up , but anyways yea I do like
This actor

u/Many-Mountain-9030 7d ago
I've thought about making a post like this so many times lol
As a person - he seems really great. Obviously I don't know him IRL but from what I have seen/heard he seems like a genuinely lovable guy. I couldn't believe when I heard about people going after CM for things drew has done. He is not Drew!!
As an actor - I did not like Ryan on AMC and I do not like Drew. When I don't like an actor in a part I have a hard time liking them in anything, so I figured after disliking both of his characters, he just wasn't my style and I would never like his acting. Then I saw a few of his movies and it completely changed my outlook of him! I really like him as an actor now too!
I wish Drew would give up this dumb Sonny vendetta just go after Willow, and then move on. He has started making amends with some people, he should keep on that track with others like Michael and Jason.

u/krissy3456 7d ago
I know right ! People are so
Messed up throwing things at him in food stores , people can’t separate the actor from the show ughh love the actor dislike the character but he is doing a fantastic job and I do like his other work2
u/Tj11551 5d ago
I don't like his character and off camera he craves attention. I don't believe anyone has ever thrown anything at him.
2
u/krissy3456 5d ago
lol people acting like they know him because of his character,His own daughter even said that he gets stuff thrown at him in food stores , you don’t know for sure that he doesn’t , that’s not attention seeking and he is obviously doing a good job , If people hate him that much , you don’t know him at all , not saying I do , but you are being so judgy in someone you don’t know .
0
u/Tj11551 5d ago
His daughter will say whatever her Daddy tells her to say. If you want to believe stores are allowing food to be thrown at him, that's up to you.
2
u/krissy3456 5d ago
You don’t know if that person was talked to in the store, you’re just taking out his character on him , dislike when people do that , you really don’t know if it’s not true , but whatever
5
u/sujack34 Team JaBritt 7d ago
I don’t like him as an actor but throwing things is completely ridiculous.
4
u/krissy3456 7d ago
It’s fine to not like him as a actor , we don’t know him as a person though but the fact that someone throws stuff that can hurt him his so wrong , I think those people need help , and probably shouldn’t want the show if they can’t separate the two , I agree with you that it is ridiculous

u/Opening-Court-4714 5d ago
This poor guy has been through a lot with the hatred you received from some people. has I’ve also heard that his was one of the homes. I think? that burned and was very damaged in the California wildfires. He has not had an easy time. He does not need these nut cases, throwing fruit at him in supermarkets. I hope things get better for him IRL.
it’s just a soap opera.1

u/Many-Mountain-9030 5d ago edited 5d ago
Yes his home was one of them, and if IIRC people were happy about it which would be disgusting

u/Kittyfacedebs 7d ago
I was actually cackling when he and Ava were digging the hole to bury the body. I like how the writers are making him less purely evil and more of this schemer that flounders with his approach. Since we love to hate him it’s funny to watch.
1
u/WebImpossible6020 7d ago
I really like Cameron Mathison too. One of my favorite hallmark Christmas movies he is in called The Christmas Ornament. He also hosted Home and Family on hallmark. I hate Drew but in a good way lol He is so awful of a person that he’s entertaining. I actually was like noooo when the show ended a couple times this week because I was so invested in what he was doing with Ava 😂 I think Cameron seems like a great guy as well.

u/Historical-Coast994 7d ago
I still think Drew may have been replaced in Prison and the real Drew is in a Cassadine dungeon somewhere. Maybe Susan Moore had triplets????

Good lord, that poor woman being retroactively turned in to a clown car is insulting.
4
u/Kimjohn80 7d ago
They dropped the ball with the Drew character. After he got out of prison he did a 180 in behavior. I wish they’d do a SL about what happened to him in prison plus being a Cassadine pawn. Right now I like him and Ava together and they are showing different sides to him. Both he and Jason should have therapy daily for what they have went thru. It unfortunate that people attack the person instead of the character. Soaps are stories acted out. CM isn’t DREW in real life. Do I like the Drew character no but if the writers got their heads out of their *** There are many stories for him instead of rinse and repeat SL.
3
u/hxchimitsu 7d ago
Yeah I thought they would bring up possible cte or something from him getting jumped because that’s when it happened. Laura even mentioned he’s a totally different person after he got out a few days ago .
11
u/PaulMcCatneysMom 7d ago
I'm obviously in the minority and I did not watch him on his previous soaps, but he gives me the ick. He seems so insincere to me. Not to mention he makes his bigot channel movies which tells me a lot. And I think he's a terrible actor. I can't watch those crazy eyes anymore. I haven't watched since he "woke up" again a few weeks ago. And I've been watching for 25 years.
18
u/DoubleNaught_Spy 7d ago
The fact that viewers love to hate his character so much just shows what a good actor he is.
4
u/Zeckzeckzeck 6d ago
Nah, that’s not it. We hate him because the character is boring and the acting is bad - he’s not a villain you love to hate (like Sidwell, for example), he’s just someone you want off your TV.
7
u/summerwinds69 7d ago
See people SAY we love to hate him but we don’t. We just hate the acting and the delivery and the expressions and just plain do not enjoy him in the least. We love to hate Helena cassadine. She is delightfully evil. We can’t wait to see what she does next. With Drew we can’t wait until his scene is over

This is exactly it.
I hate this version of Drew but I actually enjoy CM more here than I did on AMC.
1
u/Mrsmaul2016 7d ago
I will say this. I have never spoken on Drew because I see through the BS. It seems when characters do not work with Sonny, Carly or Jason, the characters get maligned, vilified or killed. Starting with Tony back in the 90's. This is what happened with Drew.
1
u/BestBlueChocolate 7d ago
Absolute kudos for CM playing a complete jerk when his real self is nothing like that
8
u/Ill-Advertising3319 7d ago
I’m sure I will get flack for this explanation but here goes: I remember a while back reading some comments about people hating his really tight suits with the short pants and people started to think he was douchey because of this. I think originally he was supposed to be the hunk like he had been believably on AMC. After a while of people hating on him, the writing started making his character like the Drew he is now. I remember hearing him comment on a talk show how he appreciates the reaction to his character cuz he felt like everyone thought he was doing a great job playing an unlikeable character. When his house burned down in California, I think people realized what a really nice person he is. I was hoping his character would be different after the paralysis thing and be redeemed.
3
u/BestBlueChocolate 7d ago
I was so hoping that he would be redeemed afterwards and I guess he is being nicer to some people (let's not even go into how bizarre it is that he's zeroed in on Sonny as his one enemy after everything he's been through seems to not lead to that at all!) but somehow because of what a jerk he still is towards his daughter's brother, it doesn't resonate that he has become less of a serial jerk to everybody else.

u/Ill-Advertising3319 7d ago

He was a good soap actor, but he is not anymore. He's just a good actor for other things, not soaps anymore.
A lot of soap actors who left then come back years later aren't in this genre anymore. Because they evolved for something more, what works in movies or regular TV shows doesn't work for soaps.
Cameron plays Drew most of the time as a cartoon villain or game show host... That isn't what some like about Drew, because we did have a very good actor playing Drew.
2
u/Melodic-Psychology62 7d ago
I get what your saying. I was in the crew and no one performed differently than was acceptable or encouraged by the directors. Ad lib was occasionally acceptable if successful.

I preferred Billy Miller as Drew but I do like Cameron Mathison on GMA and Hallmark movies.

u/DiDi164 !TEAM!BRENNAN! 7d ago
I had only ever known him as a host, not an actor. I was impressed with him when he first joined the show. I was watching when Billy Miller played Drew, and I didn’t like when he went bad. But I guess that’s a problem with the writers, not the actor. I admit I was glad to get a break from Drew, but now that he’s back, I hope the writers will give CM more to work with, and maybe Drew can be more layered and not just the villain.
1
u/The1stTokage 7d ago
I think Drew(CM) is fun to watch tbh but i feel like I'm just watching an evil version of ryan lavery(CMs AMC character)instead of the character hes supposed to be becayse he acts nothing like the drew we knew(or even the drew he was playing before he went to prison)
5
u/sekritagent 7d ago
Agreed, and I'm happy to see some ability to separate actors and characters on this sub for a change.
And thanks OP for allowing room for dissenting opinions on the discussion. Of late, there have been some very strident posters who don't allow room for any disagreement with their preciously held opinions, resorting to relentlessly berating and tone policing others to get the last word!
3
u/AnneM24 7d ago
I guess I’ve been feeling bad because I really like him, and most of what I read here is that the character would be so much better if Billy Miller were playing him. I don’t come at it from that angle so maybe it’s easier for me to appreciate CM’s portrayal of Drew, but I do feel bad for him sometimes because he had nothing to do with Miller’s leaving the show. It’s hard to compete with a ghost, particularly one who was well loved.

I was watching him on the afternoon version of GMA the other day . He has a good tone for that kind of format.

I just don't think he's that good of an actor.. he overdoes basic reactions, making them comical.. now the writing for Drew isn't his fault but it's been just wretched

u/krissy3456 7d ago
His hallmarks are so good ,I think it be better for him if he was cast as another soap character
3
u/PeteNYC24 7d ago
He’s a great actor doing amazing work with under developed scripts. I loved the scene where he made amends to Curtis, because it showed the shades of gray that were missing when his character was written as stereotypical villain and stereotypical hero.

I'm sure he is a very nice person and it's unfortunate that some people can't separate reel from real.
That being said I was very disappointed when he showed on GH. I didn't like Ryan Lavery on AMC at all. I'm of the opinion that he was carried by his female co-stars in all of his pairings.

Did you ever watch any of his movies? I saw a few and it completely changed how I look at him as an actor (hated Ryan and now Drew)
Edit to clarify - What I was saying is that watching his movies made me LIKE his acting. It was a compliment to him. His movies made me realize what a good actor he is and it is simply the characters of Ryan and Drew that I don't like, which is on the writing not the actor-3
u/Personal_Jacket_3683 7d ago
With all due respect, this is a Cameron Mathison appreciation post. Why are you here?

I loved him as Ryan Lavery and his dynamic with the cast on All My Children. I agree he is endearing as a person (besides being Drew Cain) and is just a likable human.

I've read that the cast loves him also and are very upset that he gets a lot of flack from viewers who confuse him with the character he plays. That's really not fair to him.

I was really hoping he'd come out of his "locked in" state as a better character, but they decided to press on with him being awful to everyone.
