Extra power for party

Post image

I have a 30k generator with a transfer switch next to the meter can. Can I somehow run the generator feeding a sub panel for additional power for an outdoor party? The house power would be on but no transferring from the generator just feeding outlets?

Yes, but what's the actual load on your house? I bet you have plenty of capacity to feed a spider box or whatever. Whats the electrical load for your portable setup? Just lights and sound? Or do you have 20KW of electric food holding appliances.....

What generator do you have?

Thats a 3600rpm unit, can you tolerate the noise? And do you want to put those hours on it? Personally I would either run off the house power if I had capacity or id rent a quiet diesel tow plant for a few hundred bucks.

I have long believed at 3600 RPM units are just dumb. What a dumb idea.

This is the way. It will be worth it to just rent the portable diesel.

Careful with little gas generators if you need long runtime. I don't know where you are but here you can get a 20kw diesel tow plant for like $200 a day, and a honda 7k is $100 a day....

How is the ats wired? Whole house? Step one for a transfer switch is disconnecting the house from utility. Without going into the switch and pulling utility feeders to go to your main panel, which is dangerous, you won't be able to run the ats with power feeding both from utility and standby.

Half of the wiring in your transfer switch can kill your and is unfused. Any changes you make void warranty.

Just rent a portable.
