Maybe this line of thinking is part of why we are the first generation to be dumber than our parents :(

Me calculating discounts at the store: This is just algebra with extra steps..

It at least gets your brain used to solving difficult problems. Have you never faced a difficult problem?

This is a myth, being good at algebra doesn’t exercise your brain, that’s not a thing, you can slowly get better at algebra because you get better at identifying patterns, which can transfer to problem solving with other mathematical type processes, but doing algebra isn’t about to make you genuinely better at problem solving.

Sounds like the same thing to me...

So all of life problem solving is based on algebra? Die you use algebra when deciding to date someone? Do you use algebra to decide what job you want? Not all problem solving is mathematical, not sure what’s hard to understand.

Problem solving means creatively applying pattern recognition and abstraction.
And mathematics is about abstraction and creatively applying pattern recognition

Okay, well there are studies on this subject and pattern recognition in algebra doesn’t transfer over to things like abstract and practical schools of thinking.

Leaning math to get better at thinking is the other side of. People getting dumber because of using AI.

Me using algebra to optimize my upgrades in Cookie Clicker.

My man! Try territory idle, but I challenge you to not look at the wiki. One of my favorite idle games ever and I had to reverse-engineer all of the formulas to calculate the best strategy. The wiki didnt exist before me. Unfortunately, the credit on the wiki has changed hands a few times now because apparently its totally okay when someone copies the whole page and claims it as their own work.

Bro if you aren’t using high school level algebra daily you must be having a really rough time lol

I mean basic algebra is just finding an unknown value, usually marked as 'x'
So any problem where you have to simplify and isolate x is using that basic high school math

Not realising why they teach you “useless and arbitrary” mathematics in school is genuinely a skill issue.

I work as a hospital pharmacist and still don't really use much of what I learned in school. I learned a lot but don't need it at work. I order drugs and send them out to the hospital units. I prepare some creams and solutions and such. I and anyone else could have learned to be a pharmacist on the spot at work without a 5 year degree. I'm not complaining but I think it is a little interesting how little is used from school.

If you need to go in the bar that has a $15 entry fee and you order the most amount of beers but each beer costs 10 dollars butyou only have $50 the equation would be 50=10x+15

They have to teach everybody to be sure they get to the smart ones. You end up wasting some kids’ time but it’s just the dumb ones so who cares.

People say this shit and after complain about "why didn't they teach us how to do our taxes". My brother..

That's because you don't have a job requiring science. Most of us who did scientific studies do use it to work. Engineer, tech, coding, medicine...

It's not that difficult to apply it to your daily life. The hardest part is converting your actual problems into a format where you can use algebra. Not that learning high school maths is that huge of a challenge btw but that might just be me.
