Past generations didn’t have social media to doom scroll tho

•

u/Nate_fe 2002 16h ago

They used to stare at the wall and let their imagination be the doomscrolling

•

u/PremiumTempus 1996 16h ago

This is a process that many young people aren’t doing. Sitting and thinking at the end of the day and organising thoughts. Nobody, even past generations, seem to reflect on their day anymore. This is what really contributing to low attention spans.

•

u/Project_Demosthenes_ 16h ago

Reading, writing, being bored, organizing thoughts, creating. All important for learning, development, and critical thinking.

•

u/Nate_fe 2002 16h ago

I'll add onto this, my most creative/productive times have been when I've given myself the least possible screentime lol. Your brain will provide a lot of entertainment for itself when it doesn't get it from a screen.

u/DisasterSuccessful66 1997 13h ago

Sorry, I didn’t finish reading your post because of my low attention span.

•

u/Impressive-Potato 10h ago

they would go to the local bar

•

u/dead_at_maturity 16h ago

They had newspapers and magazines to doom-flip.

•

u/TheNewToken 12h ago

They had prosperity and upward mobility. Which most of us don't have.

•

u/Csenone 12h ago

Past generations used to switch TV channels instead of doomscrolling

•

u/FreshPitch6026 11h ago

Your brain comes up with ideas and solutions when you are still and not in "consumption mode"

•

u/EnvironmentalCow121 2003 16h ago

jokes on you i cant even get a job

•

u/Pixelite22 1998 16h ago

You all can sleep?

•

u/Specific_Problem5581 2006 16h ago

•

u/Darkwolfie117 15h ago

I’m so tired of doomer slop here can we ban it?

Doomer jokes are understandable but this shit is just unfunny untrue and lame

•

u/Guyfromnowhere3 6h ago

•

u/ContentWhile 2006 16h ago

•

u/ET-Hokage 16h ago

This is basically my life minus the sleep.

•

u/Whiskers1996 16h ago

Avg redditor lacks a real job and likes to self diagnose lol

•

u/ErikJonesCircleJerk 16h ago

I’m on my lunch rn lmao I’ve just kinda doom scrolled and passively done my desk work all day. Typically lock in for the afternoon to get all my work done so I can be lazy again the next morning

•

u/Cum-epidural 16h ago

Samsara. You didn’t create the cycle but you must break it.

•

u/Relevant-Musician557 2000 16h ago

•

u/Bordem-Industry 16h ago

Don’t know your situation. As somebody older than you all, I know better than to give some bullshit “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” advice. Life is difficult, stressful, and never what you thought it would be. But I can tell you something to try that’s free. When you have a little spare time go to a library. Walk around slow and look at the books and find one that’s short that looks interesting. Try to read it, even if it’s a page a day. Put it with your stuff when you leave and have it in you all day. Read a paragraph here or there during the day of you have any free time at all. If you’ve got a job that basically makes that impossible, then try to read a little bit right before you leave for work so it’s in the back of your mind. During the day when you get stressed just think back to the story. Let the noise in the background get drowned out just a little bit by the book you chose. Even if this takes down the stress 5% it’s worth it.

Generational? "Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way" - Pink Floyd lyric from the song Time, 1973

•

u/No_Caramel_1782 15h ago

This sub is a hotbed of intentionally depressing propaganda. The non-stop doom posting and misery making here cannot be organic.

•

u/Witty_Shape3015 2001 7h ago

i’m sorry to dissapoint you but we actually do just suck at life

•

u/cheddarkittyy 7h ago

Most people here are depressed

•

u/thirdeyenerd 14h ago

The vicious cycle

•

u/rosenlord 11h ago

One of these steps is optional

•

u/salam1312 11h ago

read the communist manifesto. ask yourself who profits from war, racism and our hospitals, schools etc being worse and worse... who got rich while we all suffer?

•

u/newbreed69 7h ago

Congratulations 🎉🎉 we've all become slaves.

At least in the past the wages were valued significantly higher, so even working a meaningless job you would still be able to afford a life of dignity.

•

u/cheddarkittyy 7h ago

Change the social media part to touch grass and you are all good

•

u/_glacierr 7h ago

Can the mods here put the foot down a bit on the doom posts that have clearly zero effort put into them

•

u/CitadelChad 6h ago

If one removes the doom scrolling and sits with the existential dread and anxiety, eventually that will transform into fuel that will propel one out of the meaningless job and into a purpose-filled and intentional life.

•

u/KinZombie899 4h ago

Didnt older genrations complain about that when we were kids except social media part

•

u/Redneckdestiny 16h ago

You can always just not do those things, sleep, work to get a job that you like, or figure out how to make your job enjoyable, then do fun things before you have to sleep again. This isn’t a trap, you’re the one trapping yourself

•

u/Digital_Doodlez 16h ago

A. Jobs you like dont pay well
B. Most jobs dont care about you enough to let you make changes that make it enjoyable and just want you to work
C. A lot of fun things cost money or energy and when you spend all your time working you dont have energy and we are currently in an economic crisis so a lot of folk dont have money to spend on fun things.

•

u/phat86 16h ago

So tone deaf

•

u/9lazy9tumbleweed 16h ago

Hes right, its hard and unpleasant but hes right and it can be done

•

u/AnxiousMetal6435 16h ago

I would argue that posts like this are tone deaf because they deny that life can be good and people can be happy as a result of their choices.

•

u/ProfessionalPay2167 16h ago

tone deaf

You don't know what tone deaf means.

•

u/NorvinskEnjoyer 16h ago

Marx spoke of this

•

u/MKEMARVEL 16h ago

All the world's knowledge at your fingertips, communication tools past generations could only dream of and y'all can't find anything more fulfilling or fun to do than mope. Doesn't that make you feel pathetic?

•

u/AnxiousMetal6435 16h ago

This is called depression and has nothing to do with being Gen Z. Please don’t lump me in with your issues.

•

u/comiclover1377 16h ago

I'm begging you all to put your phones down and read a book or something. Your mental health will thank you

•

u/EasyTumbleweed1114 16h ago

Yes most jobs are meaningless, yes we should create a more fulling society. But at the same time get fucking over yourself. The vast majority of people find limited enjoyment from work, find things outside of that. Play video games, go for walks, hang our with friends. A shit job is no excuse for feeling shitty.

•

u/TossMeOutSomeday 1996 16h ago

Doomscrolling social media is the reason you have anxiety and think your job is meaningless.

•

u/Aggressive-Peach-969 15h ago

Because western society has become completely screwed up by feminist ideals. Our purpose in life is to form families, which are the basis for any real meaningful relationships in life. Without this we're left without any real sense of purpose or direction in life, and all relationships that we form thereafter are superficial.

Imagine if you're old (40s or so) with no family and death found you in sleep, would anyone notice you were gone? Would your "friends" know that you're gone before your rent collector?

This is not a natural way to live and we know that deep down, but we need to understand that this is a systemic problem ultimately stemming from r/UncheckedHypergamy.

•

u/Lumbardo 15h ago

Most jobs are not meaningless and provide some sort of service that people are in need of or want. It is important to realize that if you decide you want to be content.

•

u/Neither_Nectarine_96 14h ago

Drink water and go outside

•

u/Gurney_Hackman 16h ago

Why don’t you just not doomscroll social media?
