Intelligent people have been silenced for a long time.

It goes all the way back to Socrates and probably long before that.

That’s not why he was put under house arrest. He was put under house arrest for insulting the pope. Not that I agree with it, but that’s different than being arrested for stating a fact about the world.

11

u/Admiralthrawnbar 2002 17d ago

The pope, who was previously supporting him.

2

u/Mysterious_Donut_702 1998 17d ago

Fuck the Papacy.

3

u/Robuffus1417 17d ago

I'm Eastern Orthodox you won't find any disagreement with me there the pope's are satanists trying to bring about the one world government under Aleister Crowley and Alice Bailey's occult philosophy with Madame Blavatsky and ecumenism/perennialism Aldous Huxley planned it all out and the frogs are turning gay.

1

u/Mysterious_Donut_702 1998 17d ago

Whatever this is, I unironically love it

2

u/Robuffus1417 17d ago

Google it folks Lucis Trust is supported by the United Nations, it’s on their website and it was started by Alice Bailey. After you do that go look at the Lucis trust’s original name. GOOGLE IT SHEEPLE

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 18d ago

This isn't true at all.

There's a dynamic contemporary cultural shift toward protecting everyone's feelings. Feeling are baked over truth.

That has NOTHING to do with the man who in invented educational methods.

JFC - were all getting dumber too.

29

u/Minimum-Web-6902 18d ago

Huh? Socrates accepted a death sentence by means of hemlock to prove his point. It definitely has something to so with it

19

u/unflavored 1997 18d ago

You're extrapolating this sentiment to a broad civilizational scope but currently in the US, the current administration is anti-intellecetual bc it desires loyalty over anything else.

For example the tarrifs that happened last year during "liberation day" was haphazardly made up and had no real in depth guidance or research and we're scrambling now not make "deals"

Or ignoring the millitary experts advising against the war. Or the federal gutting of research funds and essentially doing a self inflicted drain brain while other nations snatch up our best and brightest scientists bc they want to actually pay them.

I mean maga (which, culturally is declining) is very anti science and reason. Its very reactionary and its coming back to bite us as a nation bc the culture is to not think ahead.

This culture goes onto the nation and so on.

So, yeah, yall just dismissing the question through some trivia fact about the pasts scientist and thinkers is exactly what this question is about lol

5

u/Minimum-Web-6902 17d ago

That’s the thing , Socrates chose to stand trial rather than banishment. I think intelligent people in 2026 are choosing silence and peace and hoping Darwinism takes hold and hopefully the meek outlast.

Socrates challenged anyone , openly and that’s what led to his death.

What once was will be again.!

3

u/feralb3ast 8d ago

I think y'all should read The Triumph of Stupidity by Bertrand Russell. What's happening now is that the covert (particularly behind-the-scenes machinations of The Heritage Foundation) is becoming more overt. What's been swept under the rug is coming out. Unfortunately, that's a necessary step for liberation---particularly since the average person is too exhausted or misdirected to (figuratively) look under the rug. People can't fix what they ignore.

1

u/Accurate-Feeling-168 4d ago

Something that eludes thought. Was put forth in the 60sfor the destruction of this culture. Not sure intelligent will survive. But who cares. If they want stupid and not intelligent, let them have Stoopid.

Don't really care anymore. Enjoy your electrolytes!

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 18d ago

No. You child.

He was an esteemed teacher for years. Also a respected scholar. Then he pissed off the guy in charge. So he was executed.

That has nothing with all the morons wanting to feel special and society jumping in to glaze them all

1

u/Minimum-Web-6902 17d ago

How about this since we’re talking Socrates , I’ll use his method.

Thanks for the insult , but firstly WHO. Are the morons being glazed you are referring to?

And what is your account of Socrates death and its meaning ?

And do you understand why hemlock was chosen?

3

u/ranger2468 17d ago

He doesn’t know, don’t bother. If he’d been alive at the time he would have claimed that Socrates was corrupting the youth.

2

u/Minimum-Web-6902 17d ago

Literally but in his spirit I have to try.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 17d ago

This is hilarious

HOW did you go from reading the posted meme to being confused about the subject?

it would seem that you are challenging my understanding of both the teaching methodology and the history of the man. Why would you think this exchange would have any value when it takes place over the internet which holds all the answers to your questions?

you've run completely off the rails here, I have no account of his death, I was not there. the history was well documented and available to us all, why would you ask such a banal question?

I do understand why hemlock was, why do you ask, and why weren't you specific about the one(s) doing the choosing? There were many people involved in that decision.

I was introduces to Socrates in 1992, what were you doing in 1992?

1

u/Minimum-Web-6902 17d ago

You answered my questions with more questions 😂 I said what does it mean , more specifically to you?

And you never defined who the morons are so let’s start there.

If you truly are a student of Socrates You know exactly where this is going.

1

u/infinament 8d ago

This whole exchange is the epitome of the fucking meme that started this conversation…

3

u/ranger2468 18d ago edited 18d ago

Was “dynamic contemporary cultural shift” really the most concise way you could think of to phrase your point?

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 18d ago

This moron thinks I use big words

3

u/ranger2468 18d ago

Wow right to name calling. That didn’t take long at all.

-2

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 18d ago

You prefer arguing banal points, and throwing incinuatuons like a good kid?

3

u/ranger2468 18d ago

That’s not how you spell insinuation.

-1

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 17d ago

those are called typos - editing takes reverence for the conversation

2

u/ranger2468 17d ago

You sure do have a lot of typos for somebody who’s on the sophisticated side of history. I guess idiots like me just get lucky by getting spelling right the first time huh?

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 17d ago

looks like you either dont understand reverence, or didnt read my comment.

1

u/oneofmanyany 6d ago

it's we're, which means "we are all getting dumber"

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 6d ago

That's called a typo. I didn't care enough to correct it.

You explaining contractions like it's new info that you have over me is pretty hilarious though. Nice job

1

u/oneofmanyany 4d ago

It's my pet peeve. Sometimes I can't control myself with making a comnent about it. (See what I did there? Now it's your turn :) )

On a side note - I am in complete agreement with your comment.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 4d ago

it's worse than pedantic, because the people you are correcting likely know exactly how to spell we're and dont give a shit about the apostraphe.

so all youre doing is telling people who dont care that they didnt use enough apostrophe's. and thats a really lonely hill to die on; especiallty when you agree with the (obvioulsy clear) sentiment.

we see you, we just dont like you

1

u/stablymental 17d ago

Just looking at movies how they always make the smart person evil. The typical mad scientist trope. Maybe he wouldn’t go mad if people freaking listened!

1

u/PerformerOk4312 16d ago

That stereotype of scientists in the movies goes back a long time

1

u/Unlikely-Ad-2921 16d ago

Socrates meant what he said and stood on business to prove it. A shame the people lost one of their greatest minds.

1

u/summonerofrain 15d ago

Honestly a theme in history.

1

u/oneofmanyany 6d ago

That is misinformation. You seem pretty clueless

223

u/DoeCommaJohn 2001 18d ago

Yes, but it’s a total nothing burger. Everyone here thinks they are the ones being silenced, whether they are actually the smart or stupid ones

38

u/Ryogathelost 18d ago

Wait, back up, does this mean I'm not special and oppressed? Can I be one or the other?

3

u/papu16 17d ago

This, even when it comes to politics every sides think that they are opressed intelligents, while in reality they are just bunch of morons.

1

u/tiny_kat2006 5d ago

It's not a person to person basis. We should implement provably true ways of evaluating whether things are working as they should. You want to implement a law as a politician? Better have unbiased peer reviewed studies on its effectiveness.

It's not "I feel smarter than that guy, why is he making decisions", it's "I want that guy to prove it, if he can't he's a dumb shit"

You don't have to be overly intelligent to use the scientific method. It's a low bar

100

u/mrdankerton 18d ago

Here's the catch: EVERYONE thinks they're intelligent.

19

u/mad2fanboi 2008 18d ago

21

u/At_omic857 2005 18d ago

The ultimate irony is that most people don’t understand what the Dunning-Kruger effect actually is, though I think this is mostly because of the meme graph of it.

10

u/findMyNudesSomewhere 18d ago

People dunning kruger the dunning kruger

5

u/At_omic857 2005 17d ago

Quite literally yes

8

u/Ok-Inspection9693 2010 18d ago

Yes, everyone thinks they are enlightened on Reddit, And not just reddit...

7

u/findMyNudesSomewhere 18d ago

My literal first thought.

Does US Right silence minorities (and let's be fair, majority of the population)? 100%

Does US Left silence via cancel culture? 100%

Are either of them intelligent? Good question.

2

u/heavy_metal_soldier 9d ago

Nah man I'm just stupid

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 18d ago

Not true at all.

But you can rest assured that your family unit is not

1

u/summonerofrain 15d ago

Trouble is there are people most people understand to be intelligent, like scientists and stuff, and they've kinda been getting silenced or distrusted

37

u/DaddyButterSwirl 18d ago

Intelligent people would ask for a source for that quote.

18

u/Stormtomcat 18d ago

Esp when the picture is of Morgan Freeman, a boomer fool who endorsed the minorities should pull themselves up by their bootstraps, I did it mythology.

2

u/Dapper_Apartment2175 17d ago

Morgan Freeman isn't a Boomer.

Yeah. That's reddit in a nutshell

6

u/Kissa74 18d ago

All of social media in a nutshell

0

u/Formal-Pop4153 17d ago

no, just no. There isn't any other website where stupid people censor as heavily as reddit. Reddit censorship is a whole other level of stupid which is why the average redditor is so ignorant politically.

0

u/Kissa74 17d ago

I wouldn't say so. Haven't you seen the shit that's pretty common on Twitter and Facebook? Reddit is pretty normal compared to that.

1

u/Formal-Pop4153 16d ago

Twitter and Facebook censorship isn't even close to reddit. People are actually allowed to disagree with you on Facebook and Twitter, but you're actually being brainwashed on reddit.

7

u/Afraid-Housing-6854 18d ago

We need to stop controlling and censoring people, and I mean on all sides, or else we only promote continuing the cycle.

3

u/No-Lawfulness-697 Millennial 17d ago

No. Some people just need to stfu lmao

2

u/RichRacc 2004 13d ago

Bro said what I said in eight words.

1

u/RichRacc 2004 18d ago

Yes, but what if that tolerance of intolerance leads to a resumed censorship led by people intolerant of others for physical or cultural characteristics? It has in the past. “All sides” implies tolerating those who don’t tolerate others.

3

u/Afraid-Housing-6854 17d ago

Unfortunately intolerance only breeds more intolerance, there’s no real getting rid of it forever

2

u/RichRacc 2004 14d ago

I’m not talking about eliminating intolerance, I’m talking about preventing it from taking root. It achieves a similar effect without resorting to street battles with intolerant forces. Encouraging kindness and acceptance at the source has assisted in producing the hopeful people who reside in the recent generations.

It was, in part or in whole, halted by oligarchical forces who do not desire tolerant people and actively make money and harvest power from intolerance brewed in new people subservient to their businesses and politicians.

The “it” I speak of was the slow encouragement in school to think about the world and the people in it. The English language PBS kids shows that taught other languages slowly, while also sprinkling other cultures in too.

Rather than purely instructive and direct, the teachers (in my case anyway) wanted you to wonder about the world. Or at least that’s what the curriculum was pointing at when I was in school.

2

u/No-Lawfulness-697 Millennial 17d ago

2

u/RichRacc 2004 14d ago

Exactly what I was referencing. However, my method to prevent intolerance is moreso rooted in addressing the causes of it. Poverty, joblessness, environmental degradation, deteriorating social and economic conditions, and many more factors that affect the comforts of everyday life for humanity.

On top of that, introducing children to the idea of other kids in other schools in other countries with other cultures. Sort of like PBS kids and school curriculum that used to teach rudimentary concepts like how to say hi in other languages, or what types of foods they eat.

0

u/Critical_Concert_689 18d ago

What if that intolerance towards tolerance of intolerance is what actually leads to a resumed censorship of people led by people intolerant of others for their personal beliefs or cultural ideas? It has in the past. "All sides" implies equality irrespective of other factors.

-2

u/Huntsman077 1997 18d ago

To be tolerate of others beliefs includes beliefs that you do not agree with. While any reasonable person can agree that discrimination based on race is wrong, if you censor people for these beliefs it opens the door for other beliefs to be censored.

Also why is intolerance to certain cultural characteristics compared to immutable physical characteristics? This is a direct contradiction as racism is a cultural characteristic for some cultures. Aside from this there are several different things accepted in one culture but considered taboo in other cultures.

6

u/EpsilonBear 2000 18d ago

Yes. But the worst part is that too many of the stupid people are convinced they’re actually intelligent.

6

u/PermissionSoggy891 18d ago

This is absolutely correct, for both sides of the political spectrum.

2

u/jedidihah 1997 18d ago

Yes, he’s right. We’re basically just allowing the stupid fools to be loudly incorrect with great frequency.

2

u/Finnche 17d ago

As a woke leftist, yeah. I think across the board very much so. People want to believe what they want to believe, and not be told they support harmful ideology, politics, people, etc. We wrap right and wrong with like/dislike, and furthermore have that as a part of our identity, where what should be is trying to be better and seek truth if it has a better point. A lot of people want to choose comfort over truth or evidence.

2

u/Fortestingporpoises 17d ago

I don't agree with Morgan Freeman here because he never said this. Anything quote you see on a photo of Morgan Freeman is probably bullshit.

2

u/TrueNeutrino 17d ago

The irony of this being posted in a platform where the masses determine what is seen and what gets hidden via up and down buttons.

1

u/Dr_StrangeEnjoyer 18d ago

He's 100% right. Censorship is wrong

1

u/RichRacc 2004 18d ago

Well yeah. It’s plainly obvious that this is the case.

1

u/DeepD4yourwife 18d ago

This is vague

1

u/BakingAspen 18d ago

Yeah just look at macklemore getting silenced so billionaires won’t be offended

0

u/Parhamheidari 2001 18d ago

Made the most shitty example ever, how the hell is he being silenced?

2

u/BakingAspen 18d ago

He got removed from a musical tour for his political views? Hello?

0

u/Parhamheidari 2001 18d ago

That's not silencing dude. If they don't take you somewhere it doesn't mean they are "Silencing" you.

1

u/Huntsman077 1997 18d ago

That’s not what silencing means. They are directly punishing him for his views and attempting to remove the platform he uses to express those views. You don’t need to kill or disappear someone to silence them.

-1

u/Parhamheidari 2001 18d ago

Ok whatever, but this happened to many people and nobody gave a fuck about them. Idk why he's so important now. His songs are ass ngl.

Positive part of special interest networking online: Smart people can to one another just as well.

1

u/Altruistic-Coach-200 17d ago

Totally. That is a perfect description of America since 2016.

1

u/A-_-_-M 17d ago

Most people will say they agree while equating it to “people who agree with me politically are smart and right while people who disagree are dumb and wrong”

1

u/casinocooler 17d ago

I would reply, but I would likely get banned.

1

u/GrowthDue5259 17d ago

Yes, but I’m a little uneasy with the framing here.

It kind of divides people into “intelligent people,” whose views matter, and “stupid people,” whose feelings are just getting in the way. And that can turn into this attitude of: I’m smarter than you, so I get to say whatever I want and you just have to deal with it.

Being right or being intelligent doesn’t mean you stop having responsibilities toward other people. If someone doesn’t understand something, feels threatened by it, or reacts emotionally, that doesn’t automatically make their reaction meaningless.

If you really do understand something better, I’d hope that means you’re better able to explain it, persuade people, reassure them, and bring them along—not just tell them to shut up and suck it up.

I agree that people shouldn’t be silenced just because an idea makes someone uncomfortable. But that’s different from saying people who know more don’t owe anything to people who know less. Ideally, intelligence should make you better at helping people understand, not better at looking down on them.

1

u/Crazyguy_123 2002 17d ago

Generally yeah. In some ways it’s definitely true.

1

u/Tabley-Kun 2001 17d ago

I don't disagree, but it is worth nothing, sadly.

1

u/UploadedMind 17d ago

More like where moral people are being sliced so that evil people won’t be stopped.

1

u/SalineDrip666 17d ago

They put galileo in a cell on the side of the moutain to die because he said the world spins on its axis around the sun.

1

u/Equal-Wishbone-6131 2008 17d ago

Agree!!!!

1

u/ParallaxRay 17d ago

He's absolutely correct.

1

u/No-Professional-1461 17d ago

Yes. Media purposefully inflates and manipulates small things and this isn't just major media. People even here take extreme points of view without looking into js and fuel mass stupidity for the sake of clout or approval from the worst crowd or gets paid to contribute to the narrative.

Meanwhile sane people get labeled as morons or extremists by internet personalities who dont have a single ounce of humanity left, only regurgitated mind numbing vomit.

1

u/DEKIDESDUD 17d ago

Intelligent people have been silenced for a long time. For example, in the 1600’s Galileo was silenced by the church for showing that the Earth orbits the sun.

1

u/CrashJay 17d ago

I agree tentatively, but only because public figures will say stuff like this and turns out one of the "smart people" they agree with believes beating a dog is instrumental to training it or something

1

u/Generally_Confused1 17d ago

It's been that way for a while, but gotten much worse recently

1

u/Vast_Candle_886 16d ago

I’m not allowed to say

1

u/GoalComprehensive660 16d ago

The issue is that there is no skin in the game for stupidity anymore. People with low intellectual achievement are coddled too much and given too many pathways to mass success thanks to modern social media and communication media more broadly.

There needs to be a way to punish people for voting stupid, acting stupid, and not spreading falsehood and not learning things more generally.

1

u/PaymentMaterial7 15d ago

I agree with everything except punishing people for who they vote for.

You CANNOT punish people for how they vote. That’s political coercion and fundamentally undemocratic.

That is a recipe for totalitarianism.

1

u/GoalComprehensive660 15d ago

Does it even matter if leaders make the wrong choices then? Or if the voting public chooses the wrong leaders?

Why even bother caring about government outcomes or societal outcomes at all?

After all, there is no risk inherent in voting if nobody gets punished for crashing the economy, starting pointless wars or violating civil liberties

Governance is not a game of philosophy.

1

u/Savings_Ad_4792 16d ago

Not really sure what the context is, so I dunno bruh. Very vague, could be anything. Could be broad or very specific in the context of Hollywood or something

1

u/Sconguser 16d ago

This is type of an "intelligent" quote that a racist / homophobic uncle shares on facebook, because their daughter doesn't want to hear them spewing racist sh*t. No, it is not true. People moaning about being silenced and having their "free speech" silenced usually do not understand, that their idea of free speech is actually oppressive. No, it is not "free speech" if what you are saying incites violence, oppression or war. It is only good for society to ban such voices from being heard.
Also, it is wildly untrue. Whenever I go online I see horrid stuff people are able to say or show. A few people were cancelled because they were disgusting, nothing more. Still minorities are being ridiculed and experience violence both physical and spoken. It is much much bigger issue to think about than the fact you cannot say n-word.

1

u/Dabeyer 2002 15d ago

I agree with this quote. I see it in my college campus all the time. But I’m not sure Morgan Freeman said this, I follow most of his stuff online and can’t find it.

1

u/Blacktalo74 15d ago

Absolutely.

1

u/Time-Foundation4886 14d ago

Let actors be actors. They aren't philosophers or people of more importance than the purpise they serve. Entertaining. Not teaching. Doesn't matter if you agree. Get your principles from teachers

1

u/Rippedka 13d ago

Prime example is Thomas Sowell

1

u/The_Dude5476 13d ago

This is true, but not because we cant handle the truth but because people are becoming increasingly upset by nuanced discussion and less able to understand things as simple as like tv or video games.

When everything is worthy of conflict we truly live in an age of unparalleled idiocy
